II! Does anyone know if it matters if you schedule an earlier interview or not?

I would think earlier in the application process is usually always better in the case of most medical schools. As long as you think you'd be prepared in time.

“In 2017-18 we had 7,347 primary applications from AMCAS and reviewed 4,845 invited secondary applications. Of the secondary applications, approximately 12% of these came from residents of the state of Colorado”

Would this mean that if you are IS and received a secondary you are one of ~580. If they hand out ~150 IS II, assuming you got a secondary, chances of a II are would be closer to 26%?

Does UC Denver pre-screen? I've been trying to figure out if getting a secondary from them means there is hope for an interview or if they send secondaries to everyone.

MSAR says they send secondaries to "applicants meeting the baseline requirements" so it's probably like the classic 3.0, 500 screen or similar. Altough this post:

is a little confusing. I doubt they had 34% of their primary applicants fail that screen, so it's possible MSAR is incorrect. Either way, what we do know is that there's no hope at all for an II without a secondary.

It’s also possible that a lot of people who submitted their primary apps decided not to submit a secondary, for whatever reason. I’ve done that for some schools

I'm sure it's possible for a portion of people, but the primary app is still an investment of $40. Granted they send out secondaries late, but I still doubt it accounts for more than say 5% or that number, which still leaves almost 30% getting screened out. Which I guess isn't impossible it just still seems a little high to me. I mean if I made the screen their standards can't be that high haha

You’d be surprised about how many people don’t care about that $40. At places with unusually “difficult” secondaries (they aren’t that difficult if you ask me, but they’re more work than your typical secondary), like Miami and Duke, apparently only about 50% of people who receive the secondary actually submit it.

I agree with EmbryonalCarcinoma on the difficult ones, I skipped out on a few TX secondaries because they have unique questions making copypasting hard and because of the low chances overall there.

For AMCAS it's harder to justify skipping a secondary, but sometimes there's just no good way to answer the questions. I applied to Creighton and while my full-time job involves providing healthcare to underserved communities, I don't have any true volunteer experience, and it's clear they're looking for unpaid service hours. So I decided not to submit their secondary as it kind of feels like a waste of time and money.

Was gonna reference Miami. You are so right! Unless specifically stated (e.g., for wake forest, you must have a 507 or greater), most MD schools that screen will probably screen out applicants with <500/3.00. For Colorado, there’s prob a lot of people who were like “Colorado seems cool and is in my stats range” but they’re prob on the east or west coast and by the time they’re pumping out essays for 30 schools they’re like ok yeah Colorado is very far away....nvm (that was almost me, but then I submitted!!)

Wow that honestly surprises me. Well betters the odds for the rest of us I guess

Yeah, I'm with you. I definitely submitted all my secondaries because I'm not the type of person who likes to just waste $40 on something for no reason. But, different strokes for different folks.

It's better than wasting another $100+ on the secondary fee if you only realize something after sending the school your primary though. I'm definitely on the more frugal side myself so even though it hurts to have the $40 go to waste, I've (thankfully) noticed that I shouldn't submit a few of my secondaries and saved the extra fees.

I agree. I guess I just tried to make all of those decisions/realizations before adding the schools to my primary. I still applied to too many schools though and wish I would have saved my money, but hindsight is 20/20.

Trust me, I did too 🙂 I have a huge very detailed spreadsheet (also applied to too many schools) and thought I was sure of all my decisions but once I received so many secondaries, I allowed myself to be more selective (for example, not submitting to a school that has an $80,000 oos tuition).

COA for attending Colorado as OOS is 100K/yr.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, this is my dream school and I would attend regardless, but that cost is intimidating to many.

Definitely ridiculous 🙁
(when I mentioned the $80,000 about another school, that was only their direct costs like tuition and fees, not total cost of attendance)

This is not MSAR data, this is directly from the CUSOM website.

Michigan State OOS is like this too, crazy

The cost scares me too. It’s one of my top choices for sure but I’d rather go to a cheaper school if I have the option, unless Im getting one of those NHSC scholarships.

Does the school have any aid or scholarships? How hard are they to get?

II earlier today. OOS. Complete 7/20.

conflicted because this is a great school, but pushing 100k a year CoA just muddies it a bit

Congrats! Mind sharing LM?

Hopefully changing the residence after your first year may help with the 100k+ COA.

Not sure but isn’t it that the state of residence is the same as at matriculation throughout the whole school? Like in college?

II yesterday afternoon, OOS. Complete 7/23/19. No ties but from Oregon, which is a close state to Colorado.

Hopefully changing the residence after your first year may help with the 100k+ COA.
Oregon is close to Colorado? How close? Haha, Im just messing with ya. Congrats!

I have a really low uGPA (-3.2) so I wanted to make sure I’d get in somewhere. I just want to be a doctor 🙂

oh gotcha. then your MCAT must have been really high. Great job! 😀
I hope this cycle turns out well for you
