2019-2020 Colorado

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
II yesterday afternoon, OOS. Complete 7/23/19. No ties but from Oregon, which is a close state to Colorado.

Hopefully changing the residence after your first year may help with the 100k+ COA.

All students are classified as resident or accountable (aka non-resident) students at the time they are admitted. Unfortunately, this status does not change at any point in your medical school career. You can gain Colorado residency status with the state, but this will have no impact on your tuition.

In short - once you are classified as a non-resident, you will always pay non-resident (accountable student) tuition.

It's a big bummer that a lot of people don't realize until they hear the financial aid presentation at their interview day.

I feel like that's kind of common sense. Even though they're living there, if students were able to switch, then medical schools would only ever have first years paying OoS tuition and then pretty much everyone would be paying IS tuition. Wish it was true, but no way med schools would miss out on all that $$$$

Unfortunately, I believe this is a symptom of the state of Colorado's issue of prioritizing funding for education. The state has a complex history and complex tax laws that create difficulty in funding a wide variety of measures (which is also why the roads and transportation here are a real mess).

Even at other public schools around the country, there tends to be a high bar set for being granted in-state tuition if you were originally OOS. The process often goes beyond just registering to vote, driver's license, taxes, etc. Some schools want to know gritty details like how much money your OOS parents are sending you and how often you go back home. I have heard of students at other states schools successfully reducing their tuition bill, but not very many do.

That said, OOS students are eligible for scholarships. Cost is an important consideration for where you will go to school, but is not the be-all and end-all of your decision. Especially this early in the process.

Just following up to see if anyone knows if scholarships or any aid .. possible at UColorado as OOS ...?

If accepted, apply for scholarships when they send out the opportunity. Don't be discouraged to do so. You certainly won't get any aid if you don't apply for it. I am not an authoritative source (nor is anyone on SDN), but I believe those with the most need are the ones prioritized for scholarships at CU. I am not aware of any statements while applying for scholarships that OOS students are excluded from consideration. There might be an IS preference, but again - no one here is a reliable source on that matter.

The best option to get this question answered would be to reach out to CU-specific authorities (financial aid, maybe the proreps).

Again, it's early! One step at a time. Complete your application. Then interview. Then get accepted. Then apply for aid!

I am starting to panic. I was verified almost 1 month ago and still no secondary. But no rejection either. Is this normal?

sorry this is random but holy crap you have an old account lol. nice

also MSAR says secondaries are sent to "applicants who meet baseline requirements"

Do they allow you to store luggage there? I may be taking a flight back home right after my interview.

Not sure if any Instate guys got interviews.

For anyone that just interviewed, did they say to send thank you notes separately, or all in one email? How are you addressing it to different people

Should I start worrying about getting an ii?
Completed 7/30
MCAT/cGPA/sGPA 515/3.93/3.84
URM, OOS

I think being a TX resident is hurting me.

TBH when tuition at Colorado for one year is the same as tuition for four years at a TX school, and given your stats you'll probably get into a TX school, they're probably thinking you probably wouldn't go there even if you were accepted. I think it is true that being from Texas negatively impacts your application for low and mid tier out of state schools, which kind of sucks if you're looking to leave Texas. But if you just want to be a doctor, Texas is probably the best state to be from!

For those who have interviewed here so far, what were the interviews like? Any particularly good or bad experiences

Thanks for your response. I definitely agree. It may be silly, but I would be very interested going to colorado despite the debt. In fact, my parents would probably move with me to CO because they want to live there too. Sucks that being a TX resident is so limiting.... though Texas is awesome 🙂

Who is going to be there on 9/27 (this Fridag)?
