Just got waitlisted :/. Interviewed 10/4 IS.

Would you all recommend sending thank you notes post-interview? If so, what email did you send them to?

A Thank You note is just courtesy but isn't going to impact your application chances.

come on colorado show us some II love...

I'm honestly not sure... I got excited and jumped up, which made my dogs start barking so I couldn't hear everything at the beginning. Then my brain just stopped working, and I forgot how to use my words. The shock was REAL and all encompassing and super embarrassing. lol
Congrats!! How did you feel about your interview when you left on interview day?

Got the A today too! Congrats! If it makes you feel any better, mine was just as embarrassing, basically crying before she could even say I was accepted lol.

Honestly, I walked out of there thinking there was no way I was going to be accepted. I came down with the flu the day before the interview, and the entire day was a struggle just to stay upright and string together semi-coherent sentences. It was a bad bad situation, and I cried when I got back to my rental car. Funny now... not so much at the time.

Good to know! It really seems like the interview day doesn't make or break their applications decision, which is comforting!

For those of you that got the call, when did you receive a confirmation email? I haven’t received one yet haha and the premed paranoia is starting to kick in. It all just feels like a dream still!
I haven't received anything yet either.

On page 8 of this thread, someone said we get a packet in the mail?? I’m having the same anxiety (honestly can’t believe it’s real lol) so I hope whichever it is comes soon!

For OOSers, how are you guys feeling about the sky-high tuition/cost of living? I'd love to attend this school, but now that I actually have an acceptance, I'm freaking out about the money. I already have about 50k in debt from my post-bac, and I don't have any family financial support. Anyone else feeling the pressure of taking on so much debt?

Once I had other As, I withdrew for this reason!

I'm in the opposite boat, I never received a call, just the email. I check my portal once a week to make sure the offer is still there lol

Yes. "The average med school debt is $200k" LOL I wish

I'm compiling a list of scholarships right now but considering that most are only between $1,000-$5,000 and non-renewable, and taking into account how much time and effort needed to submit a quality application for each one, it almost doesn't seem worth the effort. I mean I'll do it anyways but when costs are going to be around $100k per year, $5,000 is laughable

I received the email a few hours after I got the call. If I remember correctly, Dr. Z said that they send the official offer via email. Didn't mention anything about a packet in the mail.

Have not heard of any IS IIs lately????

I'm afraid I'm gonna have to do the same thing. Super sad, because I love this school and Colorado is awesome. Sigh... maybe for residency. :/

Yeah, at that point it's just like whatever... throw the extra 5k on top, and call it a day. haha

Same 🙁 This was by far my favorite school I interviewed at but ultimately I would rather go to any school that is cheaper.

I haven't heard back since my interview, but I've thought about what I might do if I were to be accepted. The school that I have an acceptance at currently would be about 10-15k cheaper per year, so it would be hard not to choose the cheaper option, especially because both are good, reputable schools that I like a lot. That being said, does anyone think the extra cost is worth it? I spoke with a few students on interview day who suggested that most OOS students who attend are not too worried about the high cost and feel like the extra opportunities offered at such a good program make up for it in the end. I'm sure most medical students justify the large amount of debt to help cope with reality of it, but does anyone else think that going to a better school may make it easier to get into competitive, higher-paying specialties that make the difference in cost less important? I mean, unless you're going to your state school or a Texas school, CU isn't that much more than other schools, especially private schools.

For any current students etc, how reasonable is it to commute to the med school campus from the city of Denver (if one were to live there vs Aurora which seems be a 30min drive)?

Honestly, if the total cost of attendance (because you have to consider CO's high cost of living too), was "just" 10k a year, I wouldn't let money be a deciding factor for me. We're talking about four years of our lives, so I'd say go where you think you'll be happiest and have the best opportunities for your educational and career goals. Unfortunately/fortunately, I'm in a state-school situation so the difference is more like 30k a year... so yeah. lol

I'm sure the competitiveness of a med school will have an impact on how residency programs view your app, but I'd imagine it's not at the top of their list of considerations. For example, if you have a 220 Step 1, you're probably not going to be a neurosurgeon even if you went to Harvard. That being said, I'd think that if you have two applicants that are basically the same across the board, the one that went to a more "competitive/prestigious" program might have a bit of an edge.

Unfortunately in general colorado traffic is kind of brutal. Aurora is big but you can find housing from 5 minutes away to 30. But again with that traffic 5 becomes 25 and 30 becomes an hour. Likewise, living in Denver and commuting is feasible, but you're going to be spending anywhere from 45 mins to an hour and a half in traffic every morning and coming home which is a lot tacked on to your day. Other good options are like Stapleton which is a brand new area but extremely close to the campus. Also try rotatingroom.com its for MS3 and MS4s to find short term housing during rotations but in my experience most home renters are happy to have more longer term people looking for leases.

Source: I live with a med student in aurora. and ive timed it 3 minute 50 second drive from the campus to our house late at night but during rush hour or after bad snow/ice its been 35 minutes

edit: used the wrong hour lol

It fully depends on where you live in Denver how long your commute is. For example, living in Park Hill your commute would be 15-20 minutes in rush hour and less during other times. I do not believe there are any places in Denver where the commute to campus would be an hour and a half even in rush hour. I talked to many current students about this on interview day and they said that about 1/3 to 1/2 of current students live in Denver and find the commute manageable.

If you're planning on a far commute you do also need to consider what car you have. Many apartments and residential area dont have snow plows consistently and I will without a doubt drive past 6 to 10 California licence plates stuck on or off the road when it snows more than a little (no offence Californians).

As a Californian who has definitely been in that position, do people buy snow tires for the winter and swap them out or just carry chains?

I don't know very many people that do chains, but some do snow tires but I personally get all-season tires and they work fine. I have a 4WD but a lot of people do fine on the front range with 2WD (just don't take them up into the mountains during a storm). Our snow usually doesn't stick around for more than a day or two. You just need to be careful, give yourself extra time to go slow, give yourself plenty of space to stop, and don't go out unless you absolutely need to. Most of our cities are good about plowing the main priority (busier) streets, but the side streets can be a mess sometimes.

Four wheel drive and good tires... chains aren't necessary, but if your car is two wheel drive (especially rear wheel) then there will be days in the winter and spring where you would be endangering yourself and everyone around you by attempting to drive lol
