2019-2020 Iowa (Carver)

Well, to be fair CCOM's admissions process is pretty transparent as far as they go, you even get a semi-real time waitlist #. Other than waiting a while (which happens at many other schools). Final pool means you get a second chance for an acceptance before waitlist/rejection. If you interviewed in Sept, and the committee reviewed your app at that time and did not offer acceptance, it means you have another second chance to get an acceptance in the final pool. At most other schools, you would have been waitlisted or rejected after that first pass in front of the committee.
Let's not forget they reserve spots specifically for the final pool. If they didn't have final pool, they would accept more ppl early on.

Hello so I was wondering if anyone can explain this whole final pool thing. I was pretty much zoned out due to anxiety at the interview so I have no idea what that means. I interviewed there on 12/9 and they told us 4-6 weeks... If I wasn’t accepted this past Tuesday does that mean I’m in this final pool/ waitlisted/ rejected?

The "about the process" tab does a pretty good job on your portal.

Basically, if you didn't get an offer of admission already, you are likely final pooled. The only news you can hear during the rolling period is an acceptance. In mid-january, all interviewed applicants who have not been offered admission are placed into the final pool. All interviewed applications are then reviewed in February (presumably by a separate group from the rolling adcom), and from there the result is straight acceptance, WL, or R, which is communicated in March.

To add to this, your application will be sent to five different members of the admissions committee. Each one will give you a score for several areas of your application (gpa/mcat, essays, volunteering, etc) then all the 5 assessments will be combined to give you an overall score. Applicants are then ranked within IS and OOS pools separately based on these scores and top number are accepted then the rest are on a ranked waitlist or rejected.

Ahh so was this the past week the last chance for the applicants not final pooled or is this coming Tuesday the last one?

hi friends!! If you interview in mid January does that mean you are auto final pooled? And would that make it harder to get an A compared to interviewing earlier in the cycle since now they are looking at a much larger pool of applicants?

At my interview, we were told all January interviewees could expect to be in final pool because of the timing, but they stressed that it didn’t mean there was any less of a chance of being accepted.

Thanks so much for answering and good luck to us all!! 🙂

When do they send out final pool notification? And, is everyone that’s left final pooled or do some get outright WL/Rejection?

I guess this is it, then. WL/R.

There’s still spots for an acceptance out of final pool. The final pool is simply the last look the committee gives before they send out final decisions in March, whether it be A/WL/R.

BEFORE the admission committee throws us all in the final pool

any members of the committee wanna admit they got a crush on me?

I just spent a good portion of time typing up a lovely update letter... only to realize you can only put a maximum of 1500 characters (including spaces) into the box. I guess I will rewrite it tomorrow :smack:

So I have ~10h of new shadowing, part of it with a doc who is pretty well known and on faculty at Carver. It seems like such a stupid question but would it hurt to write an update about my shadowing? I am completely aware that this small of an update likely won't make any difference but if it wouldn't be taken in a negative light I figured I might as well shoot my shot bc we be desperate at this point

How much shadowing did you have before? If you had a decent amount before then I don’t think it’s worth it unless you have a meaningful anecdote to share.

I had almost none before, to the point that it was the weakest part of my app. I might just go for it & share an anecdote because I've known this doc forever and he really made me want to go here. Wanted to ask for a letter of rec but its too late for that now

In that case it sounds like a good idea to me! Can’t hurt

If you can submit the update alongside something else that would be more substantial. But even 10 hours of shadowing (especially if you dont have many hours already) is actually quite a bit for that particular activity so it would definitely be worth submitting even if its by itself. Remember that you only get 3 update submissions

Does anyone think a post II LOI will help? This school is seriously incredible haha

I believe they say on the update page on the portal specifically not to submit letters of interest. An update can’t hurt though

Ah the only update I have is a new volunteer public health teaching thing and I don’t think that’s significant enough to be an update so wanted to add it with a LOI haha any advice on how to proceed would be appreciated!

An update itself is in a sense a LOI and of course you can include something along the lines of “X activity showed me how carver college of medicine would be a great fit”. I can’t see it doing any harm at this point.

I can see that!! Thanks guys for the help haha my neuroticism at this point is real lol

Anyone hear back today?

Mid Nov. Interviewee slowly giving up hope.

The final pool was formed what would’ve been last week, last year. Wondering why it is taking them longer? Thought it was because maybe there was 1 more acceptance Tuesday
Yeah, I feel like they try to notify about the final pool early so people have time to submit their updates. The last day to submit is on Friday.

I honestly think this was my scariest interview because of that and that they weren’t supposed to react or respond to our answers

*Interviewer mindlessly smiles, nods, and stares at me as I pretend to list real ethical issues surrounding organ transplants*

I didn’t even know if we were supposed to like list them all or go into detail about one lol

At least your pants didn’t split like mine, talk about a nightmare. Not kidding, my pants split and I had to ask someone from admissions for a sewing kit to fix it.
oh my god, now that is some crazy resilience under pressure, you are incredible omg i have good feelings about you

It wasn't like a big "rip" noise split. I think it happened at the cleaners and I didn't notice until I was at the interview. Another girl assured me you couldn't see it because my jacket was long enough. I'm hoping that admissions counselor put "stay calms under pressure" in my file. How I wasn't crying I don't know, but I was laughing by the end of it. Nothing at an interview can ever shake me now, I'm a survivor.
