At this point I just want the final pool to be out already... really playing myself rn with this false hope
I think its very safe to assume that if you haven't heard back at this point you're final pooled. One the bright side, you only have to wait about 6 more weeks to hear back. In the grand scheme of things, that's nothing (especially if you interviewed in September/October lol).

I’m kind of flabbergasted that we haven’t heard anything about the final pool yet... I wonder if they’re behind by a week as every year previously the final pool was announced a week before last Friday to give people time to submit updates. Has anyone talked to admissions and know if they are behind schedule?

Well even so, the update submission deadline didn't change so that is definitely solidified. I figured they would be announcing this Tuesday that everyone is final-pooled? I can't imagine there being another acceptance wave.

I think last year when I got final pooled it was Jan 25th or close to around time. Just give it time.

I've seen a few different people on here talk about trying to find housing for this coming fall. I'm also looking at housing and trying to find a roommate or 2 to split costs with. If anyone is looking for a roommate for either this summer or school year or both, feel free to send me a message and we could talk about it some more. Can't wait to see everyone in the fall!

So basically nothing is left to do to try to get the acceptance since the update deadline passed?
Final pooled. And nope, I was thinking they would push the deadline for updates back, but it looks like they didn't. All we have to do is wait until March!

Is being final pooled good? I just got final pooled too and I lost the interview packet on the flight back.

Final pooled as well. Don't have my hopes too high. See everyone in March!

Hi could any current students speak about housing in Iowa City? Are there certain neighborhoods where med students are more concentrated? Is there parking at school, so if I lived out in Coralville could I drive my car in? Is the bus system pretty reliable/do students get bus passes? And any other general comments/advice about living in Iowa City

Hey! I answered a similar question a few pages back, see post #585 (2019-2020 Iowa (Carver)) for my neighborhood thoughts and post #587 (2019-2020 Iowa (Carver)) for my bus thoughts. I will add the bus system is pretty reliable and you can use Google Maps for route planning or for live bus locations/times there are a couple other apps (Transit and eBongo) that help out with planning. The student bus pass is pretty affordable and works on all 3 lines for $10 a month (it is $20 a month if you also have a parking pass).

I am not from Iowa and enjoy living here a lot! Happy to answer any other questions you my have, feel free to PM if you want.

Sure, I have only lived in large cities in the past, and never in the Midwest. Did not really know what to expect coming in and on paper, the city is tiny. I think that the offerings of entertainment, food, and culture are much higher than you would get in cities 2-3x as big. This comes along with a lower COL than anywhere else I have lived, allowing me to actually afford things or a higher standard of living and travel. The city is family friendly, safe, and has plenty of places to drink coffee, beer, or cocktails. If there are specifics you are looking for, would be glad to speak to that.

I know the deadline is March 15th, but any predictions regarding when those of us who are in the final pool will get our answer from Carver? Looks like last year it was actually the week before the 15th.

Maybe March 10th?

I'm going to guess either March 3rd or 10th, more likely the 10th because they sent out the final pool notifications later than previous years.

There are a couple parking options. There is Newton Rd Ramp which is across the street (north) of MERF (where all your pre-clinical classes will be) and the hospital (MERF and the hospital are connected). Parking can get pricey and people typically only park there on days when the weather is bad or the day has a weird schedule. You can purchase a parking pass that allows you to park on nights (after 4:30pm) and weekends which every student gets because it's fairly priced and allows you to drive in to study in the evenings. Otherwise, students park at Hancher (a parking lot) and take the Blue or Red Route bus to school which runs very frequently and is free. The last option is what students who drive in every day do.

I lived in Chicago before moving to Iowa City for school and I enjoy Iowa City. Yes, it's a way smaller place but the downtown is vibrant and there are always interesting things going on. I enjoy the cafes and bars and there are some great places to eat. With Chicago and Des Moines (and even Cedar Rapids) not too far away, there are escapes if you need them. As an M1, I spend a lot of time studying and it's nice to get dinner or drinks with friends on the weekend after exams, but I feel like I have barely explored the area (and that's a good thing, I have three more years here, at least!) There are bike trails, hiking trails, and parks to explore and I'm looking forward to that this Spring/Summer. Also the school and university put on a lot of different events - from incredibly interesting visiting lecturers to trivia nights and charity fundraisers - and so, even though I don't get to go out as much, I still enjoy being here.

-Housing in Iowa City is fine, lots of options. Try to stay on the west side if possible, but east would be fine too. Just more undergrads on the east.
-Lots of med students live in those frat-like houses (AKK and Phi Rho I believe). Those students seem happy about living there. Lots of students also live at Aspire, the graduate school housing in Iowa City. I've heard that the students there often study together.
-Parking is expensive. Some people park in Hancher and then walk (10-15 minutes) or bus to the school/hospital. If you wanna splurge you can get a Newton ramp pass for 25 bucks a week during clerkships.
-Bus system is easy, reliable, and a great way to get around the city.
-I live in North Liberty and commute in each day (I share a parking pass with my wife who works at the hospital). Moving to North Liberty was a blessing and I know several other people who feel that way. Sometimes living in Iowa City and constantly seeing students, doctors, and patients every single day is exhausting, especially when trying to relax on the weekend for example. I felt like I could never escape the hospital or medical school. After I moved my grades shot up, interestingly. North Liberty is wayyyy more chill to live and feels more like a smaller town. Also way more pet friendly (have some dogs). We rarely go into the city to do anything now and are much happier because of it. Of course, n=1, but I figured I'd share a different take on the housing discussion.
