2019-2020 Iowa (Carver)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I interviewed 10/21, wish they loved me that much! Lol

So do they send the acceptances out in a mass at the same time or do they come at various times? JW what our chances are of still hearing today lmao

Could you imagine if they sent the As as they reviewed the apps in committee? Like as they vote they send the email so it’s never consistent times

I think 10/25 was the diversity day interview. They said at my interview day that they prioritize the reviews for the diversity day and rural medicine day interviewees.

I did not know of this. Perhaps I should've scheduled for 10/25 as they asked in the II email if I was interested in interviewing during the Diversity Day. Welp....

I almost didn’t do it. I’m glad I did. It really allowed me to see and love this school.

Yeah that’s what I was looking for, thanks. Also does anyone know if they intend to switch to P/F anytime soon? I’m pretty surprised that a school of this caliber still uses such a terrible grading system. I bet that they lose a ton of their top applicants who have other options for this very reason.
I'm pretty sure if you matriculate next fall you will have non-P/F grading throughout your whole 4 years. If they do switch to P/F they would likely start with the new incoming class and only implement it for future incoming classes moving forward.

I mean grades are still a thing at most schools. Even if you're on a true P/F curriculum, like say UTSW, your grades are still recorded, ranked, and used for AOA.

But as long as you pass there is no way for program directors to differentiate or rank students during the match in a P/F system. With high honors/honors/P/F there is some kind of 'ranking' of students based on grades, which can work for or against you depending on which category you fall into.

A lot of P/F schools are actually true P/F that don’t rank. I literally can’t find any possible reason why Carver would still opt to have this grading system. It’s been shown that PDs don’t care about grading. It seems like it only exists to make students miserable. Not trying to roast Carver or anything because it seems like a great school otherwise, I just can’t find a justification for why they (and other schools) do this

I totally agree; This is definitely one of my biggest reservations about Carver!

I know you’re joking but I’ve actually been considering it. I might anonymously email them and ask how can they reconcile the fact that they emphasize how important student wellness and support is, yet they refuse to do the one thing that would exponentially increase student wellness at no cost to the school. In fact, it would probably benefit the school in a lot of ways and maybe even increase the ranking. Is that too aggressive? It just frustrates me so much because I love the school otherwise ugh

Let me know how that works out because I would REALLY love to know their answer! The school has everything else I want tbh.

I mean this isn’t about just me and the school not being a fit. I’m very lucky that I have been accepted to a P/F school (although a lower ranked one), so I have the luxury of saying “this school isn’t for me” because it isn’t P/F. But for some people Carver is their only acceptance, or by far their cheapest option. Those people shouldn’t have to be extra stressed for 1.5 years for absolutely no reason, which is why I’m going to try to bring this to the schools attention.

If you end up at Iowa, just keep trying to convince yourself pre-clinical grades don't matter.

No matter how many beers it takes.

Anyone interviewed on 9/16 hear back yet?
nope, i haven't & a couple others haven't. I've seen some ppl on this thread who have heard though. It seems like this past Tuesday was decision day for just the people who interviewed on Diversity day so hopefully next Tuesday we'll see some movement

I was accepted on Tuesday (11/5) and actually interviewed on 10/11! (I didn’t post since they don’t make decisions chronologically and didn’t think it would be helpful, but I guess it could have been haha)

Good to know! I was curious bc there wasn't a lot of posting this week but of course there are always more people who don't post lol

Can I ask if you are IS or OOS?

Wondering if current med students could talk about the housing situation. For example, where do a lot of students seem to live? Is there an easy way to find roommates to share costs with and when should we start looking harder into finding roommates?

I don’t know about where most students live, but I do know where housing is available. There is a number of apartments right around the hospital, though I’d expect you’d be paying a little extra for the convenience. You could also commute in and live in Coralville or north liberty if you want something quieter and outside of the hustle and bustle downtown. Note that kinnick stadium is right near the hospital so on game days the area gets SUPER busy, so if you live near the hospital this is something to consider. I live in Coralville and take the free Cambus from research park into work. It’s a great option for commuters. Also, I should say that the parking options on campus are pretty terrible for commuting. If you want to pay for a parking spot it will be very expensive and will likely be far from the hospital. Also, if you just park in newton ramp (next to MERF) for the day, expect to pay $20. Finally, most of the housing options for next year become available in the spring, so I wouldn’t be too worried about having to jump on finding housing right away. Also, I'm not a med student, I just live in the area and work at the hospital. Hope this helps!

what about the housing on the other side of the river near the undergrad campus ? Figured it might be slightly Cheaper. Or would it best to live next to the hospitals come winter time ?
In my experience, undergrad housing tends to be more expensive and those leases typically are signed between November-January, whereas if you want to live close to the hospital you can hold off on signing a lease until the spring. I paid $650 in rent near campus and now pay less than $400 to live about a 5-10 minute walk from the hospital. (Albeit I did have to downsize a bit as well.) Also, if you want to have a cat or dog you’ll most likely need to live a bit further from campus since most companies don’t allow it.

hoping for that acceptance today like

There's also a new apartment complex near the tennis fields, with free shuttle service direct to the medical campus. Only grad/med students can live there, and it is honestly such a nice place. A lot of amenities for tenants like free coffee, gym (very tiny), and community rooms. Nice dog park, and no pet fee I dont think either. Very nice place, but I think it's a bit more expensive.

Stayed with an old buddy who lived here during my UIowa interview. The apartments are called Aspire.
