2019-2020 Kaiser (Tyson)

UCSF (150k debt) or Kaiser (near 0 debt)???? Would love to hear thoughts

Take my opinion with a grain of salt bc Kaiser has been my top choice literally since they announced they were opening, but

I think things to consider are what you plan to match in to: if you want to do like ophthalmology or interventional cardiology or be a neonatal rocket neurosurgeon, then yeah, it is probably safer to go to UCSF, but I think if you want anything less competitive or middle of the road like IM or peds emergency med, then I wouldn't just point blank turn down Kaiser.

I think that Kaiser is going to do literally everything they possibly can to ensure that their class is stellar--the resources they have are unparalleled and they have a lot riding on their inaugural class. Of course every school wants you to succeed, but I think the stakes are a lot higher for them so they are going to invest an incredible amount of time and resources. Think about the faculty to student ratio--only 48 students for an entire school of full-time professors who are dedicated to teaching us, not spread between clinical and other academic duties.

I also think it's foolish to dismiss 150k of debt as inconsequential. Debt is one of the most commonly cited reasons for physician burnout (To prevent physician burnout and depression, tackle financial stress and Quality of Life, Burnout, Educational Debt, and Medical Knowledge Among Internal Medicine Residents - PubMed) and it doesn't look that is going to be changing any time soon--unless we get solutions like free medical school. I am biased because I grew up in a low-middle income household, but 150k of debt doesn't just wiped out after a few years of work. That is a serious burden that can impact where and what you choose to practice, your ability to get married or start a family, and lifestyle that you can have in your late 20s/early 30s.

Lastly, remember that Kaiser didn't just pop up overnight. It does have a convoluted history (as literally all healthcare systems and hospitals do), but they are an extremely well-established system, and that will hold weight in future careers--I would be a lot more dubious if it was a free-standing med school. The faculty seems to come from well known and top tier institutions around the US--Dr. Schuster (CEO/founding dean) was the Chief of Peds at Boston'Children's, for example. I work in a large academic institution on the east coast and there is a lot of buzz about KP as a system and the med school.

Anyways. I am procrastinating. I totally respect anyone who would choose UCSF or any other school, but just my extensive thoughts!!!!

I am not sure Kaiser is assembling a class of primary care physicians. They can practically give their students any type of residency they want to give them.

I don't think they're aiming for churning out a bunch of PCPs either--but I do think if someone is really gunning for a competitive residency, it would be something to evaluate more closely. Although I don't think their graduates will have trouble matching, I think given the choice between a Kaiser grad and say, a harvard (or UCSF) grad for an ultra-competitive spot, programs might be hard-pressed to take the unknown over the known.

I also think at this point is it pretty uncertain whether grads will go to match in to the Kaiser system, if thats what you mean about "giving residency spots". It would actually probably not look great for them if all their grads matched in to Kaiser because it might suggest that they couldn't match elsewhere.

The issue is more of - are you happy doing neurosurgery residency with Kaiser or do you need to get to Harvard for the same. Primary care people can get in anywhere since most programs have 30-40 spots for each area.

Does this school accept updates?
They only accept post-interview updates!

Also, just a note for everyone...when we created an SDN account, we had to agree to take on 3 responsibilities...one of them being to use the search function before we post. This question has been asked 15+ times in this thread and is easily searchable (use the magnifying glass in the top right corner and change the tab to "this thread only". I understand that people use this forum as a way to get information (I have gotten a lot of info from SDN), but I think searching the thread before asking can save yourself more time since you don't have to wait for a response.

With that being said, hope that answered your question and good luck this cycle 🙂

Anyone have success asking for housing for an additional night? I wasn't able to get a flight until the morning after my interview.

I just got an interview invite and the only date available is 2/20. With such a small class, I'm thinking they probably will have given most seats away by the time I sit for an interview. Has anyone heard otherwise?

Also, for anyone who attended their interview, did they mention an expected number of interviews they're planning to give out?

While I can appreciate a chance at free tuition, I'd rather not spend 300$ to just be seen, and then likely end up on a WL. The pre-interview perk is nice, clearly they've got $$ to splurge.

I’m not sure how many spots they have given away. But what I do know is that they plan to interview over 1000 applicants for 46 to maybe 100 acceptances.

I think the potential benefit is worth it. No idea how many people have been accepted so far—maybe 20?, but it feels like they are waiting to fill a lot of spots until they’ve interviewed everyone. There also seem to be a decent amount of people withdrawing after they got IIs or acceptances. I think its worth a shot, especially since they pay for the hotel the night before.

I would be curious in the overlap between free school admissions - Kaiser/CCLCM/NYU. This would probably define how many seats become open just due to the overlap between free schools.

Where did you hear about the 1000 interviews? That number seems quite large for a class size of 50
During my interview day they said they received way more applicantions than expected and discussed their interview plans. Take this with a grain of salt because plans can always change.

This might also be because this is their first year and they want to evaluate as many people as they can.

That is what I thought. Maybe they were just trying to scare me off, I thought.

No 🙁 and they repeated multiple times that they wouldn't release any data or numbers. but there were 25 people on my day (which we were told by a coordinator is standard interview day for them-so i'm assuming they're interviewing 25 people every thursday till march...

Based on me having nothing better to do with my life on my one day off this week, I dug up this quote. Than I also dug up that they have been sending IIs since mid-July because, again I have nothing better to do with my life.

Now, assuming they started interviewing in mid-August (?) every Thursday and discounting the holidays like Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year's Thursday's... You still end up in the area of ~700-800 interviews. I can't imagine then handing out more than 100 As, so you're looking at potentially a 15% (100/700) chance to convert to an A post interview. Could definitely be even worse than that if it is really is approaching 1,000. Which is a little funny to me since I've interviewed at T10s with better odds lol.

Note: Naturally I can't factor in people who drop out of their II's. Just a skeleton calculation. I'm guessing they probably won't even hand out 100 A's. Free tuition in Cali is alluring, and they probably care about face so they'll look to keep their retention low.

Anyways, I did that math because I'm heavily leaning towards dropping out. I'll talk to the wife first and get her 2 cents. Best of luck to you all if I don't come back to this thread.

200k sign on bonus for a new, young attending? Never heard of that, although I don’t know much about doctors income other than what’s easily google-able.
Kaiser in Sacramento for primary care has a ridiculously good sign on bonus. It’s not academics.

His point was that the Kaiser medical school graduate could get a position (with the signing bonus) at a Kaiser hospital. Makes sense to me.
They have to do residency somewhere and the people who are getting that bonus today never went to Kaiser medical school.

Again, he was simply stating that Kaiser graduates could get that bonus at a Kaiser institution... which is a fair assumption. What you're saying is true but irrelevant to his point, frankly.

You can't make points about something that never happened and only could happen 7 years in future.

Theoretically, 7.5 years considering the first batch will graduate in 4.5 years and need at least 3 more years for completing a residency.

I still haven't heard anything back after submitting my 2ndary on November 1st; over 2 months now. Anybody close to that date that is in the same boat or has heard back? I'm thinking I probably won't hear back until mid-February or early March, what do you guys think? Thanks!
