2019-2020 Morehouse

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you for that.

Would you happen to know then how realistic it is to graduate with honors? And how helpful are the lectures for STEP 1?

I know it's too early for me to commit to a speciality, but I have my eyes set on Ortho and am hoping that a school like Morehouse could help me achieve that. Thanks again!!
That I can't say, as a first year we dont do a lot of Step 1 prep, that mostly occurs in second year so I could potentially reach out to a 2nd year and get back to you. Also honors is usually based off of your clinical grades which wont occur till 3rd year so again that is a little out of my realm. There is a program called nth dimensions that prepares minority students for residencies in ortho and derm. Students that join this program have a 90% success rate matching into these specialties.

mind sharing stats and when you submitted your secondary?
Secondary submitted early july. 3.4cgpa, 503MCAT (upward trend from previous take). Non-trad applicant, tons of hospital hours, volunteer work, masters with focus in social med. I did not think I would hear from them. I am grateful though. It was a pretty neat experience

Hey y'all
to those who interviewed here. This is probably a mundane question but did you guys send any thank-you notes? And to whom? My interviewer said they do not encourage contacting them personally. Do we just email the admissions office people?

I personally didn't send one. It seemed to me that the interviewers already made up their mind about me before I even left the room LOL.

If you vibe with them, go for it! But otherwise, not writing one won't affect your chances

its not too hard, exam averages are usually about 87%, yes we do all our exams on think pads which the school gives you and its built into your tuition
Another question if you don't mind:
Do you think the exams are easy, or is it just that the students work incredibly hard for the exam averages to be that high?
Just asking because I hope that there wouldn't be any grade inflation or anything. Thanks!

Did anyone who was complete around late august (08/22) get an II?

They are definitely not easy, but most of us study 4-6 hours a day so we are well prepared. There is no curve you get what you get so grade inflation is not a thing. Remember medical school is not rocket science, the material is not difficult it just piles up very fast. If you stick with it your exam scores will reflect that. But also remember your clinical grades in 3rd year are what determines your competitiveness for residency, not necessarily your class exams in the first two years.

Did anyone interview in September and not hear anything yet? It seems like only a few people were accepted so far.

I’ve been complete since July with silence still. Lol idk what to think at this point.

Think that patience is a virtue. To make you feel better, I was complete in early July and I received an II just last week. So, yours could be right around the corner! Mental fortitude is a must throughout this process, so believe in yourself!

I sent one to the general admissions email. I don't know if it does make a difference but that's what one of the Deans suggested and I enjoyed my experience there so I figured it wouldn't hurt. Just be sure to name the people you are thanking, since you can't email them directly.

Any other accepted students receive an email back after emailing acknowledgement of acceptance offer to admissions? There’s a two week deadline and I haven’t received a confirmation email. I’m afraid they’ll rescind the acceptance or something.

I emailed them a letter of acknowledgement and they did not reply. I wouldn't be too concerned though because they take a while to respond (if they do)

Could you tell us if exams are inhouse or NBME?

Thanks for taking the time to answer btw!

Why can’t you email your interviewer directly? Is there a rule against this? Oops

The Dean and the other admissions committee members said to not e-mail your interviewers directly at the beginning and the end of the interview day my friend lol...They emphasized it at my interview day, so I’m sure they probably did at yours too

Just send your thank you notes to the email they provided at the time they spoke about it. I think it was like [email protected], but don’t quote me on that ( I ended up not sending thank you notes either)

Sent from my iPhone using SDN

I was complete 8/28 and had an interview on 10/18. I definitely wouldn't lose hope. they focus on applicants holistically.
Thank you for the advice. Because it's getting hard to not lose hope. When did you find out about the II though?

I don't remember any more specific rule besides that it's not allowed. Maybe they just don't want students putting pressure on the faculty who do interviews.
@cringleFCB17 is right though, they emphasized it on my interview day too. But hopefully they just appreciate that you sent one!

This must've been something new because I did not hear this when I interviewed early September

For the 3 letters of recommendation required by this school 2 of which are preferred to be science professors, can that be a social science professor or do they want hard sciences like chemistry, physics, anatomy, physiology, and biology?

Thanks

I believe traditional science courses, that would be apart of BCPM gpa

Would you guys consider Morehouse or Meharry medical college to be a better program/school for med school overall? Why? Thanks

It depends on what your goal is. They both have two distinct missions. Which mission resonates with you? Only you can answer that. Also, the surrounding communities of both are distinct.

Good point yeah. I have read not too good reviews about the resources at Meharry, so I'm kind of hesitant. Also, I see that both universities give mostly grades in the 1st two years versus a pass/fail system, which I also don't like.

Why don’t you like grades? Gives you a chance to shine and gives you the ability to push for your best instead of just try to pass. Don’t be afraid of grades. Embrace them.

I'm going to push for my best regardless, but having a graded system puts more pressure on anxiety on people rather than creating a less competitive environment. This is further exacerbated for people who already have anxiety or stress on a regular basis. For me and my personality, a pass/fail system would work best.

Any other acceptances here?
Looks like Morehouse gave out those As BEFORE Oct 15 and its been silence sine then.
Interviewed (way back) on Sept 13th.

I interviewed back in September too and still silence for me. I guess they're waiting until late November for us

Does anyone know if Morehouse is receptive to updates and where to send them? I can't find any info on these on the website or portal. Thanks!
DoA said that they are very receptive to them since they continuously review apps throughout the cycle. Just don't pester them with it (one time they had a student email them every week 😳)

Does anyone know how accurate the MSAR data for Morehouse is? It says they interview 418, waitlist ~200, and then accept ~100 off the WL. That means they must accept like 300 people out of 400. To those who have interviewed, did they discuss these numbers?
