2019-2020 Mt. Sinai (Icahn)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
kb1900 is correct: the people in power who really have an effect on how the medical school operates are Dean Muller, Dean Parkas, and the specific MedEd staff.
Interesting. While I am pleased to hear that Charney is not directly involved in medical education at Icahn, I am wondering why it is the case that the dean of the medical school is kept isolated from the students? That structure does not seem sustainable to me.

I'd also like to caution those on here who think people are jumping the gun to consider: as StanleyYelnats said, this is not the first incident related to sexual harassment to have occurred at Sinai. Personally, I've read about related incidents in other articles/reports and seen cautionary tweets here and there for at least a year. That hints to issues that extend beyond one or two isolated incidents. As someone on the outside, that makes me extremely cautious. It suggests a systemic culture of misogyny and misconduct that is not being actively, effectively addressed. That's not the kind of community I want to risk being a part of.

Also, please keep in mind who is most likely to be directly affected by these issues: Women. SPECIFICALLY women of color. Remember that in the Oct 15th article, two of the three documented suicides connected to Sinai have been women of color. I don't want to imply anyone has spoken like this yet, but if you feel like you want to mitigate the concerns of people in this thread, take a moment to consider if the problems being raised would affect you directly. The concept of a culture of harassment may seem outlandish for you, but for myself and many others it is a very real reality that we are cognizant of when choosing our future educational institution.

I am a white woman. I pulled my app both because I do not wish to support an institution that may have a misogynistic work culture, and because I would truly feel unsafe to be a female student under the guidance of such individuals. I'm not going to risk my own physical and mental health when there are many other medical schools I can apply to.

Fully in support of this.

On this thread because of the lack of conversation about this on the residency side - withdrawing my application for residency, as I do not want to be affiliated with an organization with such (for a lack of a better word) disgusting practices/priorities and absolute moral absence.

Best of luck to you all with the medical school process - there will be many great schools for you.
Think about the doctor you want to be.

I think the better way to describe it is not that he is kept isolated, but more that there are so many levels of administration in between his position and where the students are that his influence is barely felt.

This. Charney is more so the dean for the dean for the health system which obviously does include the med school and the med school is an integral part of the health care system. However, Dr. Muller is the Dean for Medical Education and is the top of everything med school wise. Basically, the admins can function and get us things most of us need on their own and don't need to ask Charney for permission. I do believe if you are on the student committee of the med school you meet with Dean Charney at least once a month to provide updates and big picture things.

Did anyone else get the Icahn Insights email this afternoon? It ends with "We look forward to your becoming a part of the Mount Sinai community and its cutting edge research centers and institutes, where rapid advances in basic, clinical and translational research enable innovative approaches to patient care."

I interviewed a few weeks ago and am not sure how much to read into this.

I think they send these emails to everyone who interviewed. Been getting an email from them every Friday since mid Nov.

They begin admitting in January on a rolling basis to take that as you may with regards to how far they are in their interviews.

does it look bad if you send a LOI but not a thank you note

Are both interviews here conducted by faculty? or is there a student interviewer?

Sinai is a school that loves to see interest and actually asked us last year to keep sending updates to show that we were interested - I sent monthly updates and a second letter of intent upon getting acceptance to other medical schools. Don't be shy!

Sinai on the front page of the news once again!

No amount of redesigning the ED will make it any better. Nurses down there having to take care of admitted but un-bedded patients is definitely an issue. It’s kind of funny to me that the article chose to make the hospital the enemy when I question the existence of any practical solutions for this issue. There is straight up no room for more space - up top or in the ED. I highly recommend visiting the Sinai ED around 8pm-12am once if you’re ever in NYC - it’s more eye opening than anything else you can see in the city. Triple stacked beds in the hallways and er, retu full, resus full. Constant shuffling so staff can even get to their patients physically. It’s constantly overflowing and the inpatient beds are always 99-100% capacity even with lots of pressure to discharge people. People sometimes get admitted to inpatient hallways outside their future bed if it’s safe.

I have had 2 patients “admitted” to medicine that have gotten their full 2-4 day treatment course in the ED before even getting a bed upstairs. Have had plenty leave ama after being admitted for the same reason.

What did you have to update schools about monthly?

worked in research for a year and was presenting at conferences and working on a few projects. Every month I’d usually end up having a submission or something new to talk about.

If users actually think I’m a PR person, you’re feel free to check my post history but lmfao. I can understand my tone coming across weirdly from that post but come on now.

All in good fun lol. If Sinai actually hired a PR person to post on a free forum I’d have bigger concerns lol.

People who sent updates, was it to their admissions email or did you just upload to portal?

I did both uploaded it to the portal and sent them an email saying that I recently submitted something to the portal just to have a solid confirmation that they received it lol.

I made a throwaway account for this post, because I am an active member of the community and I did not want to be doxxed. That is to say, this post is not a troll. I really care about you all and I want you to be armed with as much information as possible.

I know there are a lot of posts on here about how Mount Sinai is getting a lot of bad press but there is one thing that no one is talking about. One of their physicians has been credibly accused of sex trafficking minors out of her home. Dr. Eva Andersson Dubin’s butler testified under oath that in Dr. Dubin’s home he met a 15 year old girl that had her passport stolen, had been transported internationally, and had been drugged and assaulted. *trigger warning* the chilling testimony is on page 8 of this document https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Giuffre-unseal.pdf) Worse, Dr. Dubin is more than just a physician at Mount Sinai. Her and her billionaire husband donated the Dubin Breast Center of the Tisch Cancer Institute at the Mount Sinai Medical Center where Dr. Dubin reportedly sees patients. As far as I can tell, Mount Sinai is still allowing this woman to practice medicine in their clinics. It is absolutely sickening that someone who has been credibly accused of trafficking a 15 year old girl has been branded as a champion for women’s health. Once again, this institution has placed wealth, power, and prestige over basic human decency. It perpetuates a culture that allows apparent predators to reach utmost power, Dr. Dubin and David Newman alike. I know the SDN community so I know that this belief system is antithetical to everyone on this website. And I know you are going into medicine because you deeply care about the health of your community. For that reason, I challenge you to hold Mount Sinai accountable. Rescind you application and send an email or letter to admissions explaining your decision. Call for the resignation of Dr. Dubin and demand that Mount Sinai no longer takes money from those that are credibly accused of trafficking children. Request an investigation into the culture of this community and demand a plan of action to ensure that no more predators make it to the top ranks of this institution. Take to social media and empower your community with this information. Go to your interview and request an explanation for their affiliation with Dr. Eva Andersson Dubin, an explanation for their failings in the past, and most importantly, ask them how they are going to fix it. Current students, demand more from your administration. Silence and sweeping under the rug from those in charge is not enough. Make your voice and moral standards heard.

I know that we are all desperate to go to medical school and Mount Sinai is a name that holds prestige and perceived opportunities, but enough is enough. When there is so much evidence that an institution will place profits and power over humanity, to stand by idly and attempt to join their ranks is tacit complicity.

I have more supporting articles for all that I wrote and can provide, but if anyone believes this post if false or written in bad faith I encourage to google Dr. Eva Andersson Dubin and see what you find. The evidence is both chilling and damning.

Gotta say I’m glad i withdrew already....

Thank you for bringing this to light. Genuinely curious to hear the reasoning for why anyone would still attend here after hearing story after story.
I have to say I was slightly worried that my post would be met with a little push back or "bad apple" rationalizations, but in the past 30 minutes everyone has been on board. So thank you all!
To answer your question, 1. I think a lot of people just don't know about it. I applied initially because my PI went to Mount Sinai and loved it. Although I learned about the problems in the ED (which was really enough for me to withdraw by itself), it wasn't until I really started doing research that I found out about Dr. Dubin. 2. I think its hard for people to let go of because Mount Sinai is a super prestigious school in Manhattan that feels more attainable than NYU/Columbia/Cornell. 3. I think some of the offenses are so egregious that is seems unreal. Like it is almost hard to believe that a famous billionaire physician was allegedly trafficking children out of her home. Its also nearly difficult to believe that the head of EM was sexually assaulting patients. Its so cartoonishly ghoulish that it lends itself to deep cognitive dissonance. This last reason is exactly why I made the post though. We have to take this seriously and take a stand against this kind of moral rot in the medical community.

I absolutely agree with you. I am so happy that you took the risk to let us know. I wasn’t specifically asking you or the current students why they are attending since you guys can do more good from within. I wanted hear from the current applicants: how can you guys look past these stories and still choose to attend?

Ah I see, yes also very curious. I know I just made a very strongly worded post lol. But if someone wants to explain their thinking, I promise I won't be combative or aggressively engage.

To add some context, this is associated with the Epstein case, with whom Dr. Andersson Dubin and her husband were involved.

yes, it is! in my opinion, this makes it all the more damning as its the general public and professional consensus that the allegations against Epstein are true. Additionally, she continued to associate with him and went on a campaign to rehab his public image after he was released from jail for trafficking minors. She even had Thanksgiving with him after he was released from prison. I didn't want to get into all of the Epstein stuff at first because I didn't want it to derail the fact that, for our purposes ,the onus is on Mount Sinai.

Right. I brought it up precisely for the reason you mentioned, that general opinion is that Epstein is guilty.
