People keep quoting that number, but it just isn't true! I'm not sure that the reality will be considered that much better, but the real number is closer to 20%. 10% is just the number that will receive the initial A, but unless their yield is 100%, the final number, that includes people called off the WL, will be closer to 20% because their yield will likely be close to 50%, just based on where else their acceptees are likely to get in, and how other schools will likely match scholarships or grant need based aid. The only subset of their pool that will be 100% yield will be those with only one A! 🙂

Again, 20% isn't spectacular, but it is twice as good as 10%, and who among us (who isn't already sitting on a full scholarship A) wouldn't gamble whatever it costs to go to NY for a one in five shot at a full scholarship at a T10, other than those who didn't bother applying in the first place? 🙂

You sure about that? I thought the acceptance rate includes those pulled off the waitlist.

Yes, the acceptance rate includes everyone who is ultimately offered an acceptance, which is why it has to be higher than 10%. People are throwing 10% around because they are interviewing around 1,000 - 1,200 people and indicated they will offer around 100 acceptances, but that's just the first round because they don't know what their yield is going to be. Unless it's 100%, they are going to have to pull people off the WL, which will increase their final acceptance rate.

Last year, before free tuition was announced (class entering fall 2018), they accepted 300 to fill 100 seats. It's reasonable to assume their yield will now go up, but not to 100%, so I'm assuming they will offer around 200-240 As to fill the 100 seats (significantly down from 300, but still a lot higher than 100), with 100 initially, and the balance from the WL. Again, don't go crazy and assume everyone is going to take the offer just because it's T10 and free. Lots of folks with T10 As will have more than one, and lots of people get need based aid, so the decision for many won't be driven by free tuition. Also, lots of people who get into NYU will also get merit money from other schools.

We won't know for sure until the cycle is over, and my 20% might be a little off in either direction, but I promise you the final post-II acceptance rate will be significantly higher than 10%. In any event, what people are complaining about really doesn't make a lot of sense. Even if the post-II acceptance rate was 10% (which it won't be!), the vast majority of people would still be better off getting an II under those conditions than being one of the 2 out of 3 to not receive an II in order for those that do to then have a 30% post-II acceptance rate!!! 🙂

Unfortunately, they wont be admitting many upfront to cover for the yield since the free tuition will play into that equation. People have to actually turn down the seat before they offer it to someone else which may not happen until late in the cycle.

Dean Rivera said on my interview day that it was about 50% after free-tuition announcement. Remember that NYU just shot up dramatically in the US News rankings in the last few years, and there’s definitely a perception out there that it’s not a “real T10” or at least that it’s reputation isn’t quite consistent with its new ranking. I’m not saying I agree with this, just that it could explain why plenty would still choose to pay more for Harvard, Hopkins etc.

Then that's the answer, and the dean actually is saying that the final post-II acceptance rate for the class that entered in fall 2019 (that has not yet been published) is right around my 20% guesstimate! And please don't be so sure that plenty are choosing to pay more for other schools. Between merit and need based awards, lots of people good enough to get an A from NYU likely have money offers from other schools.
