anyone get more information on the virtual second look day yet? is it still scheduled to be on April 3rd right?

Does anyone remember what they said about merit scholarships during interview day? I swear they said something like they send out applications for those or something but I can’t find it in my notes

They definitely said they were going to update us about when those would be live at my interview day and I think they mentioned them going live in January. But I have not heard anything about them since.

Okay cool just wanted to make sure I didn’t hear something incorrect about applying for scholarships lol I interviewed mid February and they told us similar thing but I feel like they said March/April about the date they will send them out

If anyone has any questions about Rush please let me know! -current M1 bored at home. It is a great place and I look forward to seeing you all on campus this year 🙂

Thank you! I see a lot of people on here talking bad about the flipped classroom curriculum. How do you feel about the curriculum? Where does all the negativity come from? Also, about how many hours per week are you doing the team-based learning activities?

Thanks! In addition to the flipped classroom question from @Wolf00 , I would be interested in any general pros and cons you've experienced, and how easy it is to access research opportunities at Rush. Also, do you happen to know how students are ranked at the end of M3? Thanks!

how many in your class were pulled out from the waitlist last year? does rush extend a considerable amount of offer to the waitlist folks?

Thank you for answering questions on here! I was wondering if you guys are paired with a sort of counselor or anyone who you meet with to determine if you are on track/competitive for your residency application?

I would say that the flipped classrooms work mostly well for me. We basically break off into groups of 18 and smaller groups of 6 within those to go over a case study. The nice part of it is that an actual clinician is teaching these sessions, so we get a clinical understanding of how what we are learning comes up in real-world scenarios. Also, I learn well by talking about concepts with other students. I will say, if you are looking to self-study your way through medical school, you may not like this curriculum, but even then you may find value in discussing concepts with others. It really depends on what kind of learner you are. The downside I would say is that some of the activities we do aren't that useful and could be cut out imo, but this is a personal preference. I think the negativity comes from when the curriculum first changed 3 years ago and things were all over the place; however, things are more ironed out now and you guys will be the 4th class with the new curriculum. Overall, the flipped classroom is beneficial to me. In a week, we have from 8-14 (it varies) hours of flipped-classroom on average.

-Pros: Awesome classmates who are willing to share resources and study materials with one another. We got each other's backs and even the M2's are so supportive and invested in our education! There really is a culture of paying it forward. Faculty are also receptive to feedback and will do a lot to help you. Curriculum is beneficial to my learning style (talking over concepts with others). Rush is a great hospital system with many faculty/clinicians, so it is very easy to reach out to someone to discuss shadowing/research/anything else. Location-wise, in a great spot near downtown Chicago so no shortage of food and entertainment.
-Cons: our library isn't the greatest and needs some renovations. Some activities during flipped-classroom are kinda useless, but this is a personal preference. The interprofessional education curriculum kinda sucks lol but this is a once a month class.
-Research is very available at Rush! There is an opportunity to apply to a Dean's fellowship the summer after M1 year and they will provide you a stipend to do a research project. Generally, my classmates who are interested in doing research have had no problem in finding a position, I personally am waiting until summer.
-You are ranked in quartiles according to 25% preclinical grades and 75% clinical grades

I got off the waitlist mid-May last year, and I know around 5 others who got off too. There are definitely others I do not know about. Every cycle is different though, so it will change.

Hmm you are not paired for a counselor, but there is counseling available for discussing residency applications and requirements.

thank you and just curious were you on the active consideration before the waitlist? rumor here says AC people are most likely to get in is it true?

Hey, could you provide a rough schedule of your M1 beginning months? I really want to understand how many hours of mandatory attendance/lab each day.

Also have you heard anything about maybe small stuff changing because of step 1 going pass/fail?
Here is a sample week:
Monday: Histology 2 hours (this class is optional)
Tuesday: Practitioner course 2 hours, Leadership course 2 hours
Wednesday: no class
Thursday: Practitioner course 2 hours, Basic Science course 4 hours (this is the "main class" where we go over a case study)
Friday: Anatomy dissection 3 hours

Every week varies however, so there can be more or less class depending on the week. But we often get at least one weekday with no class.
I have not heard of any curriculum changes.

what exactly the leadership and practitioner courses are about?

I'm trying to figure out the amount of student loans to take out and can't find the tuition for 2020-2021 anywhere...anyone know where I can find this? Thanks!!

According to MSAR, tuition is about 55k. But that number has probably gone up slightly for this year.

Practitioner is a clinical reasoning course. We either go into a specific topic in detail from a clinical perspective (example: Congenital heart defects). Or, we do a sample patient visit where there is a presenting patient with certain symptoms and as a group, we ask questions to figure out their diagnosis. It also includes labs where we learn how to clinical skills associated with that block (heart exam, lung exam, etc.)

Leadership kinda varies, but we've gone over topics like patient safety, medical errors, and other things like that.

So
Has anyone here received their financial aid award and/or any form of scholarship?
Haven’t heard anything yet either!! I didn’t email them though so if they respond to would love to know what they say 🙂

So I emailed their coordinator of financial aid and what not. Merit aid will NOT be given out, only need based aid!

Also, yes, most people who have gotten the email with account stuff like myself should already see the full amount of aid you will be getting int erms of that for M1 at least.

I got a little, but sadly it's not even near the Merit aid I'm getting from another school 🙁

thanks for sending the email. Just to clarify, they will not be giving out any merit scholarship at all this year?

Oof thank you for following up with us!! Sad day though they’re not giving merit aid 🙁

In the email he said "Rush University does not offer Merit Based Scholarships or Grants."

But maybe don't lose hope, in the official second look email they mentioned something like "if you need help making a decision...let us know..." or something, so maybe they can expand your Need Aid in some cases.

I wouldn't recommend asking them for that though unless you have a good reason just in case haha

To be fair, doctors make a butt ton, so we don't REALLY need it. But it's still scary seeing a 300k loan lol

That’s so interesting because I swear they talked about merit scholarships during interview day! But yeah I definitely expected to be taking out tons of loans was just hoping to lessen them lol

Their need based aid wasn’t that great for me either but I guess I’ll take what I can get!

Like the idea that they’re doing but why is the research opportunities webinar all the way back on April 28th? 😢

Rush FB group rly tryna get me to participate in this push-up challenge huh

Does anyone know when waitlist candidates will start to hear back? Also, how are candidates pulled from the waitlist if it is not ranked? What is it based on?

As per the WL email: The Rush Medical College waitlist is not ranked and I think only the adcom can answer that question lol
Just gotta wait it out til after April after people narrow down their acceptances :grumpy:

Did anyone here attend the Second Look Curriculum talk on Friday and was it useful? It’s an hour and a half so wondering if it’s worth going through or if it’s a rehash of interview day material

lmao with the lesson of this pandemic they really should accept everyone off the waitlist to relieve the physician shortage!

Some of the stuff towards the end might be helpful because it was current students answering questions but the first portion was mainly the same curriculum presentation given on interview day

Can any current students talk about their plans for M1-M2 summer/ share what most students end up doing. I think its a disadvantage that we won't get out of class as an M1 til July as most summer opportunities beyond just doing research start in late May or June.

There's a dean's fellowship available where you complete a research project with your mentor of choice and get a stipend. This is available to around 50-60 students per year I believe, so a good chunk of the class can apply and get it. Other students find external research projects with other institutions in Chicago, there's a lot of universities around and being a med student gives you a leg up.

There's also a lot of volunteer opportunities, free clinics, children's science camps, peer advising to high-schoolers, and similar activites available to do. You can always start your own project if you see a problem you want to address. Btw, the dean's fellowship can also be done with a community-based volunteer activity.

You can also work in something non-medicine related. The dean's fellowship/research in general seems up in the air due to the current situation, so I'm going to be tutoring SAT and might look into working at a coffee shop or something lol.

Some students just take the summer off and chillax, because this is the last break you will get until M4. This is totally fine too!
