2019-2020 UC Irvine

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How did people send their thank you notes (digitally)? I am trying to send it through the portal but I cannot figure out how to attach files and I'd really rather have them as pdf's than copy and pasted text.

I e-mailed my faculty interviewer directly and was told to thank my student interviewer through the portal, which I did 🙂

Probably a longshot question but did anyone who received a LEAD-ABC application invite back in October hear anything since?

You cannot attach any type of file. Only plain text through the portal.

Has UCI sent out any preII R yet? If I submitted in August does that mean I’m on a silent hold?

So I called the other day and they were really nice. They said if you haven't heard back yet it just means that haven't come to a decision yet on your application. The lady on the phone recommended sending an email through the portal for a more specific answer on your current status. Has this been others' experiences?

That said, granted SDN is a small n, but I'm getting the impression that only a handful of people have been A or WL and no has been rejected yet...

This is basically every school. They review you, assign a score or rank, accept top 10% or so and then wait until they see more interviews.

Let us know if sending an email through the portal is fruitful!

So you’re saying that everybody who interviewed before 10/22 had their app and interview looked at and were placed on waitlist?

It depends on how you look at it. This same kinda deal is happening at UCLA rn as well.

PM me if you want details, I'd rather not post it here.

I'm curious, would you let me know your thoughts as well?

I wouldn't call it a "waitlist" since that is reserved for after they tell you they don't want to offer you an initial acceptance. It is more like a "hold". This is for every school. If you are not accepted, you are on hold. For example, Northwestern and UChicago, they only accept a few applicants and everyone else is on "hold". In February you get notified whether you get an A/WL/R.

Quick question: how likely is it that someone would straight up get a rejection after the interview? Is the hold mostly for accepted vs waitlisted?

This 'hold' strategy seems to suggest that schools are trying to evaluate all the applicants to select those that are the best fit for their campus. By holding early applicants to evaluate more of the applicant pool, schools can get a better idea of how interviewed applicants compare to the rest of their peers before sending final decisions. This is actually great news for people who may have submitted their secondary later than others!

TLDR: Rolling admissions may be less relevant than it has been in past years.

What about the 'silence' strategy (ie. Pre-II silence)?

I doubt it. What usually happens is that you could get rejected right away but they won’t release until the wave.

Thanks for your response. And by “the wave” you mean the final wave or the last day?

Personally, I believe all interviewed applicants from Oct. and before have been reviewed and scored... so if you haven't heard back (like me and the majority it feels like) then my belief is we are on an internal hold. There is potential to be accepted on a rolling basis depending on future applicant scores or WL later if your score is consistently falling below most interviewees as time goes on. I think not hearing back for a long time essentially means you will not get the R outright. At the very least it will be a WL game. Since Irvine interviews pretty late in the cycle, I assume a lot of waiting awaits us :dead:

Do you all think for the final scores, factors other than interview performance are considered?

Yes definitely its holistic and everything is brought up. The theory that everyone is on a level playing field after receiving an II is almost certainly wrong.

I lean towards the theory that says they already have some people on “Accept” status but you can potentially be knocked down depending on future interviewees. This is basically a similar theory to @Dr. Rick Sanchez but with my wishful thinking.

Also keep in mind the “ensemble” analogy. If they lose a flute player then they’ll accept another one, but will not accept more than 5 flute players at a time.

Lol at that analogy taking it to the extreme  , but it's definitely true that pulling people out of WL positions depends on a myriad of factors like demographics and other external factors contributing to diversity that the school holds important in assembling their student body.

One of the admissions officers at a school I interviewed at used that analogy haha

has anyone OOS interviewed here? what is the percentage OOS? also do they review those apps later?

What about the 'silence' strategy (ie. Pre-II silence)?

I feel like that remains the same.

Exactly, I think it's the same.

Think of it this way... if you accept someone (or reject for that matter) you cannot reverse this decision. However, if you leave someone on read (AKA silence/hold) you have avoided the need to make an irreversible decision until you have more information about other applicants in the pool. This makes the most sense from their end, especially if they are trying to build a class with certain characteristics in mind.

Often times we (as applicants) take this process very personally, when in reality it has more to do with the biases of each admissions committee and the diversity of the applicant pool as a whole. This is why I try not to take rejection too seriously. Especially because I have heard of many qualified applicants at every school who are also being rejected. We don't have much leverage in this process, and once we submit the outcome is pretty much out of our control. Patience is a virtue!

Hard question: does anyone know if at least some people have been waitlisted?

I interviewed OOS in August. Did not see anyone else OOS there. I'd like to think the state bias is lowered once you're at the interview, but I'm unsure if this is true.

From the responses on this thread it doesn't seem like people have so far! Likely only a few acceptances and they are waiting to release more as the cycle continues and have a better idea of what their yield will be!

Only 10 percent go out to OOS applicants per MSAR. I dont think that will change.

There is no place to submit a deposit for the acceptance correct?

Congrats! Would you mind sharing your stats?

Did you also apply to any special programs?
