2019-2020 UNC - Chapel Hill

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just don't understand how the Adcom can effectively discuss my interview and weigh my value as an applicant several months post-interview. At that point you're 100% working off of notes, not the memory of our actual interaction. UNC's process seems so disorganized and confusing, yet they give us zero information and treat it like the secret ingredient to Coca-cola.

Has anyone that interviewed with faculty members heard back yet? It seems like most who have heard back so far interviewed with students.
I interviewed with a faculty member and have not heard back. This is just gonna feed hysteria like the disappearing essay in the Duke thread and I'm all for it.

My portal changed to "decided" yesterday, and I interviewed with a faculty member. Haven't heard any news yet

Interviewed with faculty 9/13 and still awaiting decision. Hard to believe if my decision were a baby we would be close to entering its third trimester
LMAO I now feel the need to describe all our wait times in terms of pregnancies. Imagine if someone gets on a waitlist and gets an A May/June “Just had my full term and healthy UNC baby” thank you for the laugh! Lol

Good luck!! I hope you hear soon! I was just wondering if maybe the faculty and student interviewers are going at different paces. I interviewed with faculty too; so, just wishful thinking on my part lol Anything to make sense of the chaos:laugh:

Got an email that my FAFSA was received by the office of Student aid and that I should monitor my UNC email account for updates, but I haven't even been accepted yet :bored:

Anyone else in the same situation?

Lol yes!!! Same! I’m hoping this is a good sign

I interviewed with a student but haven’t heard back yet so I’m guessing it doesn’t matter who we interviewed with

Accepted! Completed 9/19 and interviewed 1/13. In state. Status was changed to decided on portal Tuesday afternoon and email about a status change this morning at 7:20 AM. No phone call yet. Best of luck to everyone!

Congrats! Also just got accepted the same way through email this morning to check portal. Interviewed late October, am OOS

Congratulation to those accepted!

Just because I found comfort in this and hope it eases some anxiety. For those that have been waiting a while, someone from October was accepted as late as mid March prior to any WL notifications last yr so stay strong! It’s not over till it’s officially over!

You're a ray of sunshine and I appreciate you.

Is it safe to assume that if they havent made a decision yet, that it most likely means we’ll be waitlisted?
I feel like there are still some acceptances to give out. I interviewed 1/27 along with like 40 other people (morning + afternoon) and some interviewed in Feb. So far acceptances have been given out to people who interviewed before 1/27, so I'd think they're still reviewing apps for later Jan and past ones they haven't made a decision on yet. Just trying to stay optimistic

Although I haven't been notified as on the waitlist yet, I'm assuming that's essentially where I stand now. At this point I'm just stuck in the weird purgatory between "Not willing to give an initial acceptance" and "Not ready to reject" while they wait to see how many of their initial offers go elsewhere.

It's hard to know for sure, but they've interviewed at least 150 students in the past several weeks, so I can't imagine that all those students would be waitlisted (+ rejected). We haven't heard much re: acceptances on here and I heard from multiple current students/faculty that UNC is slower than others to make a decision- quite a few told me that they heard in March.

If you're lucky to be considering other options, then yes, I think it's healthiest to assume that this is a waitlist and form your decisions without UNC in mind.

Feel free to express your opinion, vent, etc. But let me say this. I too am worried about whether it's over for me as an applicant, and am guilty of letting myself get affected when other people post that they're pretty sure it's over despite: 1) the glaring reality that few of us know what's actually going/what that actual class status is, and 2) the multiple posts by people who've scoured threads from years past saying to wait and chill tf out. Like I said, I'm worried, so I spoke to a friend who's a UNC student. Basically they said:

1) it's still relatively early (with evidence provided of peers who were accepted later in cycle [march/april/may] +off waitlist + even after initial rejection [not unc but for another school])
2) get off sdn - there can be good info, but when the stress goes up it can turn into a gossip column meets impending stock market crash

Like I said, I'm the kind of person who's hesitant to think it's just all going to be okay and still worry that I'm just going to end up hearing I got an R or WL. But it won't get us anywhere. Do what you want, but if you're like me and refresh this page multiple times a day searching for validation, I instead encourage us to focus on continuing to find supportable info (positive or negative), and helping each other keep hope. Then at the very least, we'll have made this SDN thread a more substantial community than the others and won't have to heed the advice to get off sdn. Food for thought.

My heart goes out to y'all and I want to add some anecdotal evidence and a dash of advice to this thread. During the 2019 cycle, I interviewed early Nov. and received my rejection on March 15. While "it ain't over til it's over" is always sage advice, I will add that if you have heard nothing positive from any schools, please, please, please start thinking about your re-app now before it's too late to make significant changes for the next cycle. Do not wait until you receive rejections from all your schools (or waitlists, which may or may not move) to motivate yourself to look forward. You still have time to find more activities to participate in (as was my case) and improve weak areas in your application. Take control of the things that you actually have control over. This was hands-down the best advice I received last year, and I will be in UNC's class of 2024. Stay strong friends.

This is exactly me except I interviewed a tiny bit earlier last year. So, what they said^
Have hope, but work on your reapp.

Hey, after registering for second look, did y'all get a confirmation email? I didn't, but I did get the "Thank you for your response" page. I'm just trying to make sure it went through since it wasn't working earlier.

does anyone know about how many people they waitlist and how many get off the waitlist?

No confirmation email here just the “Thank you” page

Have been doing pretty good about keeping it (it = drowning in anxiety) to myself, but I have to ask- any December interviewees hear back yet? With people already registering for second look I am an even bigger mess now lmao

+1 on December interview not hearing back yet! also+1 on exactly how you're feeling lol

Should I be doing the FAFSA even though I don't have any acceptances? Will I be disadvantaged somehow if I get in and haven't done it already?

Hey! You should go ahead and do the FAFSA before March 1st even if you're still waiting to hear back. When completing the FAFSA, send to the schools you interviewed at (you can add more schools later if needed), so that way you still meet the priority deadline. Then, when you're accepted, the school already has your info. A lot of med schools' financial aid FAQ's on their websites mention going ahead and doing it even if you haven't been accepted yet. Good luck!

Can anyone accepted confirm whether UNC is showing up on their AMCAS Choose Your Medical School tool? Specifically MSTP...

I was accepted about three weeks ago and have spoken back and forth with the office so far, but my CYMS page still doesn't list UNC. Wondering if this is a common issue and they haven't forwarded acceptances, or if it's just me and I need to contact the school.
