1. I have heard that McGovern does but it is all rumor
2. Nope, nontrads, gap years are welcome.
Would be very hard to expect one to apply to every school in Texas since they keep growing but also have different institutional needs and preferences. If Rio Grande would like to admit students who are from the area and serve as doctors in the same area after graduation, does it help to interview someone who plans to live in Houston or Dallas?

People who seem to do well with gap years are those who have not applied. Texas schools have some bias against reapplicants. Those who applied late the first time have fared better with schools who complete their reviews much earlier than TMDSAS deadlines. I have heard some schools tell their admittees that their application was not reviewed at all the first time because it came late July.

Doesn’t sound very fair. If that’s the case, why would schools set official deadlines for applications in fall?

I believe it though. This is anecdoctal, but I applied really late last year and didn't get a single II. I reapplied early this year and honestly didn't really change anything on my app, but already have multiple IIs this cycle.

I know someone who is MS1 who was told that their application didn't get a reading two years ago because all their interview slots were already filled by the time the application rolled in. A&M is known to provide feedback to candidates who didnt get selected and couple of years ago another person got feedback that their app was never looked at due to the lateness.

In Texas, it is all about being early at least at some schools. They review, interview and close admissions early.

this is all good information. I'll try to have my app in by mid early June next year.

May I ask when you were complete last year?

Is there a correlation between Group1/II or how early you interview before prematch with prematch acceptance rate? Prematch has been moved up to Oct 15 this year so I assume chances of prematching must be higher since less applicants were interviewed due to the accelerated timeline.

Prematch period still goes through December 31, although it starts earlier this year at October 15. Each Texas school has its own strategy for using/not using prematch for offers. Everyone, please don't drive yourselves bonkers overanalyzing statistics and pseudo-statistics.
If you are a timely applicant with a solid application your chances don't depend on when you interview.

for anyone that has already interviewed here, any tips/pieces of (allowed) information for people interviewing in subsequent months? What is the climate of interview day like (i.e. intense, laid-back, interpersonal, etc.)? Just trying to mentally prep myself before making the trip to Dallas in a few weeks!

Its laid back. All the interviewers are instructed to have conversations with the applicants. It's not a barrage of structured questions, it's very smooth and easy going.

thanks so much!!

Should I even bother submitting my 2ndary to UTSW? My mcat is between 504-508 (hiding for identifying purposes) and cGPA is between 3.6 to 3.7, sGPA is 3.3 - 3.4. My Masters GPA is 3.85 - 3.95.
I am non trad and have strong ECs

go for it!
i feel like I am way on their lower end MCAT and GPA.
Its also slightly late to submit their secondary. Its been sitting in my inbox for two months now. I prioritized all the other Texas schools because I felt I had a better chance.

You are not a typical fresh grad, you have time now to do the secondary, and no secondary fee. What's the downside?

Very true. If its free, then I am not losing anything.
Wish me luck!

I have my interview here in 2 weeks. If there are any current students here in the LGBT community, how do you feel about the general campus environment around such issues?

also, does anyone know about a "stay with a student" program that UTSW offers? I'm tryna not spend another > $100 on a hotel if possible haha

Its pretty cool. You message the interview housing coordinator and she gives you contact information of a current MS for you to stay with. I ended up staying thursday and friday night and asked my hosting MS4 hours upon hours of questions lol

Do you know how to contact the housing coordinator? I can't find that contact info... is it on the app portal?

Its on that massive pdf with all the interview info you need, which includes the hipaa course in case you decide to do the rounds. It should be somewhere in your utsw portal. Her name is Jeanine or something like that

also, does anyone know how many students UTSW accepts vs matriculates? just curious about this school's ratio!

Last application cycle was a little over 400 acceptances from over 700 interviews, and then class size was 230. There's an official list with med school acceptances and matriculants for MD schools somewhere on SDN but I can't for the life of me find it now. My hosting MS also said they offered 400 or so acceptances.

I just reserved a spot on the waitlist for the Friday rounds, is it common for there to be any movement on the rounds waitlist? My interview is in November and I honestly wasn't expecting the rounds to fill up so fast.

Anyone have any idea how many of the ~700 interviews have gone out so far? Do they send out most of them early or are there still a lot to go? I was complete 8/7 and noticed there haven't been any IS invites on here since early August. This is my top choice so hoping there's still a chance!

I think just not many people are participating and sharing on SDN this year

If there aren't many ii's being sent out then maybe there'll still be slots open right? 🙂 There are 10 interview dates, and ik that this weekend (9/14) is the 2nd interview date. So it's probably still very early for utsw

I think they sent a lot out early. I know 2 people interviewing in mid November

Do you know if there were earlier interview slots that they could have taken? UTSW lets you choose the date you want to interview at

@wysdoc

Is being complete 7/31 generally considered quite late for the TMDSAS application timeline? I submitted my secondary on 7/22 but wasn't complete until my MCAT score release on 7/28. Thanks!

July is fine, late August or September would be late. Good luck!

I interviewed here in one of the earliest dates (OOS). I really loved the school. Should i send a letter of interest prior to october 15? dont know if sw encouraged that sort of thing

I’m in a similar boat and wondering the same thing. Also for a letter of interest do you also update the school on your activities? Or just restate why you’d be a good fit?

I don't think you need to do any of these types of letters, they already chose you for an interview and met you!
If something major happened ( a scientific paper published, a Nobel Prize) you can update them in a brief email.

Anyone know what the dress code is for the friday afternoon events? Should we dress up or would a simple button down be fine?

I was waitlisted here last cycle. In their waitlist email it was stated to not send any letters of intent or interest.

Portion from the email:

What about a letter of intent?

“... we will presume you would consider an offer of acceptance from us. No additional letter is necessary.”

What should we do now?

“There is nothing more you can do to alter, supplement, or improve your application. We have all the pieces necessary to evaluate your application including your academic credentials, letters, and course reports. Should we have any updates on the status of your application we will be in touch with you directly.”

Idk if this applies to before Match Day, but I think I do remember them mentioning on interview day that they weren’t too receptive of them.

Hi! Not LGBT myself but I have many friends on campus here who are and are out. There is an active pride group on campus who coordinate social events (usually like one per month). I believe during the Friday of the interview day there's an option to go to a diversity breakout session. We have quite a few lectures during our endocrine block on LGBT healthcare. Hope this helps!

II earlier today (LM 74). Actually sent my application last night (9/22) and was sent a complete email instantly. Big shock to me given how late for Texas it is, and that it’s my first II!

I scheduled my interview for mid-November. What showed up as available for me was two weekends in November and a few more in December.

Wow so you got an interview in less than 24 Hours? You must be a perfect fit then.

I got an II this afternoon, secondary in a little over a week ago (I'm elated). From Arkansas, LizzyM around 76-77ish. Interviewing December 7. People who interviewed here already:
1) Any tips you can share or questions I should be prepared to talk about?
2) I have NO research experience and I know SW is a big research school. If I don't bring up my (nonexistent) research experience, are they likely to ask? If they do ask, what can I say that might save me from this major weakness in my app?

1. From what I remember, both interviewers are blind to your stats but have the rest of your application. So, everything else is fair game. Both of mine were very conversational and relaxed. My tips would be to know your app, be calm, and be yourself.

2. I have no clinical research experience at all and it was not brought up. But I did get asked if I think it’s important for physicians to do research. I said yes and then he went on explaining how it’s crucial that doctors stay up to date on the latest research and findings, research the new medications and treatments, etc. to serve our patients best. So, he wasn’t talking about performing lab research.

You got invited for a reason! Remember that! They don’t just invite any ol’ person. They think you will make a good student at their school based on your app. Now you just have to show them how awesome of a person you are. Good luck!
