2019-2020 UT Southwestern

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
yeah i mean it's not exactly realistic to auto interview what like 2000 people nationwide compared to a few hundred in just TX

Are you sure it’s a true auto interview? I have an LM if 75 in state which is not far of from a 74.6 that the person above me got. Do you think they read or your app or just have an automatic algorithm that screens and spits out interviews?

If we must speculate, the "formula" that UTSW uses is likely different from LizzyM because lizzym weighs GPA and MCAT poorly. So its useless to speculate with Lizzym.
E.G. LizzyM 75 could be 525/3.2, or it could be 517/4.0. GPA points are a lot more "valuable" than MCAT points, especially to Texas schools, but lizzym doesn't make this distinction.

I agree with @rune2h , schools don't actually use the LizzyM score to screen, it's the convenient SDN convention for comparing the combo of MCAT and GPA.

They have a minimum for both GPA and MCAT. I would think for instate it is at least 3.8 and 516 or 518.

so like the others i think their "auto" is similar to Baylor's Early Decision protocol

so basically some GPA and MCAT combo to qualify which is somewhere around a 75 LM

I have a high MCAT but 3.75 GPA so I might not meet their autoscreen

The initial screening stage of the Medical School’s admissions process is race- and ethnicity-neutral. Group I applicants are invited to interview based solely on MCAT and GPA. Applicants who do not meet minimum requirements to be in Group I may be invited to interview in Group II, based on a set of established factors identified in the application: personal qualities, academic parameters, and mission-related factors.

Isn't this a highly inefficient way of conducting their admissions process? I feel extra pressure as someone who got an interview with high stats, because my app didn't get a read through before the interview. I know I'll have to sell myself during the interview, but perhaps even more so for this one because they didn't invite me for the contents of my application.

Sorry if I sound ungrateful. I'm a bit worried because my research is my strength but that can be hard to get across depending on the interviewer. I'm a former MSTP applicant but now an MD applicant for the context of my concern.

At the interview day there will be no division between those who got an interview on their very strong stats and those who got an interview on stats plus other factors. You deserve an interview, you got this, now let them meet you and see your personality!

They'll almost certainly still review your app before the interview. Your II may have been stat based but that doesn't mean they're gonna disregard everything else.

Anybody with an interview in September/October interested in swapping with me in november

What sort of questions are good to ask at interviews? Dont want to ask something I can just google but in terms of talking to faculty? I know SW has a big research focus so was going to ask about the scholary research elective in 3/4th year etc

Same and I second this notion. The only drawback I can even think of is that the class size is huge, but they do make an effort to split you up into smaller groups. Other than that, this is a school that's on par with Harvard.

I would like to "third" this comment and say that the rounds at Children's the day before were a wonderful experience as well. Really the whole two-day process was enjoyable

Is submitting secondary around late August really bad for this school?

I think so but just do it anyways. At the interview I met 3 current students who interviewed at the last date possible in January and got in.
they must be poster students to prove that UTSW accepts students from later rounds. 🙂

For the 4th essay "Have you engaged in any public service activities for a duration of one year or greater in length (examples: Military, Peace Corps, Teach for America, etc.). Yes or No? If so, please describe the experience and impact on your personal and professional development. (Optional)" is volunteering at a non-profit clinic considered a public service activity?

That would be a regular volunteer activity, I think the question is getting at something more all-encompassing like the examples given.

Those specific activities are paid for but done year long. They also give you money to attend graduate school as part of your compensation.

This is one of my dream schools I want to apply to next year. Aside from strong numbers, anything else I need in order to stand out as an OOS(Arkansas resident) student?

Probably research
Thank you for the feedback. Have lots of research, but no real publications. Just poster presentations. My only publication was a lit review in some small journal about using silver in medicine. I hope that will be enough. I really like this school. Good luck to everyone applying. Sorry for hijacking. Carry on.

The other thing important for Texas schools (especially UTSW) is prompt submission of your application. TMDSAS opens up on May 1 and try to submit by the end of June

Yes that will be enough talk about that. But then extend your interest for research into a particular specialty you see yourself in, talk about the latest advances that you are interested in researching at their school. One of my interviewers was a bone scientist doing genetics and my research was in epigenetics so we were able to have a substantial discussion of translational research.

I only had 1 4th author pub too, so i think a lit review will work just fine cause it's still peer reviewed.

Has the TMDSAS page updated with rank/pending actions for anyone who interviewed here yet? It's been over a week

I'm not gonna post my stats because I don't want people to feel some type of way, but I can confirm that there is definitely not a minimum. I did not get near a 518 or have a 3.99 or whatever gpa and I was offered an interview. I would tell everyone to just do their best, shoot your shot, turn things in/sign up for interviews as soon as possible, and don't let threads like this scare you or make you feel inadequate. We will never truly know what schools are looking for in an applicant and different things set different people apart beyond numbers and scores.
The school is pretty clear about how they screen Group 1. So they must have moved onto group 2.

The Medical School considers race or ethnicity as a mission-related factor in the screening process for Group II applicants. During the selection stage, applicants in Group I receive an individualized, holistic review and are scored based on a broad range of factors. Additional points may be awarded in four categories: 1) personal qualities (e.g., extra-curricular activities, motivation, communication skills, socioeconomic status, race or ethnicity, compassion, integrity, maturity, and leadership); 2) academic parameters (e.g., college or university, majors, courses, MCAT/GPA discrepancy, and recommendation letters); 3) characteristics identified on interview (e.g., motivation, interpersonal skills, creativity, intellectual capacity, and overall impression); and 4) mission-related issues (e.g., career interests in underserved areas, primary care, or academic medicine/research). An applicant does not receive any additional points based on race or ethnicity; however race or ethnicity may be considered as part of the broader category of “personal qualities.” During the selection stage, all applicants in Group II receive an individualized, holistic review of their application and interview results to identify those applicants with qualities, attributes, and accomplishments that demonstrate they will contribute to the mission of the Medical School. No point system is utilized for Group II applicants at this stage, but an applicant’s race or ethnicity is one of many factors considered as part of the individualized review.

Very interesting. Thanks

Does anyone know the GPA/MCAT cutoff for Auto Interview Group I? Is it perhaps the median for the previous year's admitted class?

@wysdoc Any insights here?

The info that @texasvandy posted is the most specific I can find. Strict numerical cutoffs are not available to us, the common man LOL.
All we can know is that high stat superstars get the benefit of the doubt for an interview

Thank you!

I wonder if you have any insight into:

1. Do certain TX schools hold it against applicants who fail to apply to all TX schools?

2. Is there evidence that TX schools dislike applicants who take gap years?

1. I have heard that McGovern does but it is all rumor
