2020-2021 Pittsburgh

you both should define what research heavy means

Yes, you're absolutely right.

For me:

- 5 research projects over 5 years (4 undergrad, 1 grad school)
- > 1,500 hours of research
- 2 poster presentations
- 1 manuscript submitted to a clinical medicine journal with impact factor > 9.0

I think low(er) MCAT is a more apt grouping -- at least for UPitt.

At the end of the day, esp for T10 and T20s, it's usually the MCAT that holds applicants back. High GPAs are a dime a dozen
I mean according to their website, 515 was the average matriculant MCAT, and at least one matriculant had a 500 MCAT. I think Pitt really puts in the effort to look at all aspects of your app, unlike some other T20 schools.

I asked during the diversity and inclusion session if we’d have to wait until feb for decisions and they said Jan 30th so that’s the info I’m passing along
I'm 99% sure they misspoke then. It was in January in previous years, but this year it's pushed back to February 19 according to what they said in the info sessions I attended. I've also heard some rumors that they might release decisions a couple days before the official release day for some interviewees, but not sure if that's true at all.

Any ORM applicants from late august-early september get IIs yet? The fact that they're scheduling into January and will release all decisions in February is not reassuring for those of us complete on the later side.........

No II yet, ORM complete mid-September. Their website says interviews conclude on January 29 and I feel ya. 🙁

That definitely makes me feel a bit hopeless....seems they mostly picked ORMs from July complete dates and the rest of us aren't even going to get a fair shot sigh
Yeah... Oh well, there's only so much we can anticipate. I'd like to believe Pitt would still even so much as glance at our apps but if they don't it's just one school. It will be ok.

Feeling the same way and applied around the same time. :nailbiting:

Ugh, that VITA was brutal. How strongly do you think they weigh our answers to it? I'm not sure how useful it is, given that they could have asked the same exact questions during the actual interview

according to previous post, they apparently only look at q3 and 6? :/

In the morning session with Dr. Piraino, she confirmed only the Resilience and Cultural Competency VITA questions would be scored (from 1 to 4).
Have they said how much weight it will play in admissions? For example, if it will only be used to rank people on the waitlist

Hi guys, hope you're doing well! <3

I'm interviewing soon, and read through this thread + looked through SDN feedback. Didn't see much on how long the interview took aside from someone reporting 60+ min and 25-35 min. Could someone else who interviewed comment on the length of each interview? Also, did anyone know ahead of time who they were being interviewed by?

Thank you!!!!

my faculty interview was around 30-40 minutes and my student interview was nearly an hour. you dont know ahead of time who is interviewing you.

have they sent rejections yet? Or is it complete silence until the final decision date? I submitted my secondary on 7/30 and still haven’t heard anything.
+1 waiting from 7/20

Your should have indicated three areas of medicine that you are most interested in. Your faculty interviewer is probably from your most interested area (surgery, academic medicine, whatever it is)

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but can anyone tell me about student chat session? Is it just applicants speaking to current students?

Did anyone get info on around how many interviewers they're planning to WL in February this year? iirc it's usually something extremely high, then they take a ton off of the WL to end up with closer to 50% post-ii acceptance?
Idk the answer to this, but I know that someone had posted earlier in this thread that they mentioned that they plan on interviewing roughly the same number of applicants as last year. If this is the case, I feel like they may even burn through way more of the WL than usual given all the "window shoppers" due to virtual interviews. This is what I'm telling myself at least to remain hopeful lol

They told us they plan interviewing more people (supposedly +100 applicants and opened up Thursdays for interview days).
For more clarity on the information session, they said they plan on interviewing no more than/around 780 applicants. They then gave historical data that I wrote down:

2020: 734 II, 333A
2019: 665 II, 315A
2018: 739 II, 365A
2017: 796 II, 370A
2016: 846 II, 359A

So in reality, the post II acceptance rate is under 50% but it seems pretty good and they emphasized that they wanted the interviews to still be selective.
Oh maybe they changed their minds then since previous info sessions

how did you guys prep for VITA? and when did you take it? it's the only school i'm interviewing so far that's required VITA and their email specified the deadline for completing VITA is ten days after my interview date so should i take that time to practice or get it done with as soon as i am ready?

Take the AAMC VITA practice test a couple of times, prepare for ethics kinda questions, and take it when you are relaxed. Don't wait till deadline - you will be nervous.

I did the practice VITA and looked at the example questions, then did a google search for any other examples or guides online and made a big worksheet to brainstorm. I wrote down any answers and situations I could use (e.g. I had a leadership example prepped, cultural experience prepped, failure/success, etc.). When I went in I had some idea of potential experiences I could draw from, without knowing exactly what I would be asked. I also reviewed my secondaries because I figured questions with those themes may pop up again.

does anyone know where the zoom link for the interview is? can't figure out where it is lol

does anyone know if they accept pre-II updates?

It also says that "Our Admissions Committee welcomes letters of intent/interest and updates to your application. The most appropriate time to follow-up with us is following your interview or after the receipt of your official admissions decision. Communications can be sent via postal mail or to our admissions mailbox at [email protected]. Any communication received from the applicant will be included in their admissions file."

I had substantial updates (pubs) to add so I sent one out anyway and believe if not specifically stated not to send (like mayo or case) then why not?

lol @ me not reading any websites and submitting updates to Pitt and Mayo

Did most of you take VITA before or after your interview and why? My email says we have 10 days to take it after our interview, so I was gonna wait till the last minute lol. But I'm curious if people felt that it will help you prepare for the interview or whether interviewers will review it if you take it prior?
I took mine the day before lol
