2020-2021 Pittsburgh

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I interviewed with Pitt a couple days ago- OOS, LM 70, URM. I really, really genuinely enjoyed it lol. My faculty and student interviews were both hella conversational, kinda wish I had more time with both! Pitt's initiative to place you with people that share some of your interests was awesome. The group activity was also hella easygoing.

Did folks send thank you emails to their interviewers? I didn't catch the emails of mine. I know it's not like a factor in an admissions decision but I truly enjoyed speaking with them.

That's so awesome to hear! Are you told who you'll be interviewed by in advance? Or do you just find out the day of?

both of my interviewers’ gave me their emails and I sent them thank yous but neither replied lol rip. I think it’s not frowned upon to send them unless otherwise stated by admissions!

I saw someone else replied to you already, but yes, no idea who it was beforehand!

I also found my interviewers to be extremely well-matched to my interests!

This is really interesting and awesome that they make an effort to do this. Could you clarify which interests they seemed to match with? Were your research backgrounds similar to the interviewer or was it something else on your application?

I have a big neuro background and my faculty (unbeknownst to me as I began the interview) was the director of pediatric neurosurgery :writer::heckyeah::bow:

I'm a non-trad with interest in disability medicine (and research), and a pretty extensive background in LGBTQ+ advocacy; my student interviewer had very similar interests!

yeah that had to be planned 🤔 did your interviewers question you a lot about these interests? like were the discussions focused on that heavily?

Did you guys find the SDN interview feedback to be helpful? I guess they seem to be pretty general questions anyways

The feedback was accurate in that there weren't any "tricky" questions, per se, and I certainly didn't feel grilled. I thought the question suggestions were accurate -- very general questions, and plenty of time to ask questions of your interviewers!

does this place accept pre ii updates?

this is what I found on FAQ under secondary portal:

  • When is it an appropriate time for me to follow-up with the UPSOM?
Our Admissions Committee welcomes letters of intent/interest and updates to your application. The most appropriate time to follow-up with us is following your interview or after the receipt of your official admissions decision. Communications can be sent via postal mail or to our admissions mailbox at [email protected]. Any communication received from the applicant will be included in their admissions file.

Does anyone know if the open file faculty portion is still only your personal statement? Apparently that's how they've done it in the past so I'm not sure if they have your W/A section this yr
I believe they can see everything besides your MCAT/GPA and LORs

Does anyone know how heavily they weigh the VITA? I don't feel like it was terrible but I definitely fumbled during q6.

Any idea of how many get waitlisted and what waitlist movement looks like?

Not sure if this was mentioned before, but does Pitt welcome thank you letters (emails)?

I sent thank you letters to both my interviewers, and they both replied positively. It wasn't mentioned during my interview but I sent them just because they were really great and friendly interviews!

Hi sorry if this has been asked. Has anyone done any of the information sessions? Are they cameras on? /Do people dress formally for them.

All the sessions I've been to so far, everyone has had their camera's on. I dressed with a nice professional shirt (not a full suit). Make sure you have good lighting! Personally, I think it's best to treat every aspect of this process as though it's part of your interview. Leave a good impression, engage with the presenters by asking a question or actually emoting throughout the presentation! I was kinda surprised by how many people had a dead face on the entire time... looked like they would rather be anywhere but this information session. Overall though, it was very laid back. Nothing to worry about!

Hi everyone! I have my interview scheduled on Nov 13. For those of you who have already interviewed, when did interview day end?

can those informational sessions fill up? i dont see any dates for the research opportunities one

For the PSTP program, is it okay for the two LORs to be similar to the LORs I included in my general letter file to Pitt? Does the PSTP admissions committee have access to the letters I sent to Pitt through AMCAS? I already submitted letters from both my research mentors so I'm not sure how different they would be even if they were tailored for the PSTP program.

I asked at an info session and they said we can submit the same letters from AMCAS since they do not have access to that since the committees are separate.

For any fellow interviewees here: I was not able to sign up for the Curriculum Information session until after my interview day. The email I got says to schedule these before then, but I just couldn't find any open sessions before my interview, although I was able to sign up for other info sessions before my interview day. Do you think this is a big deal? Or am I just being way too neurotic right now lol.
