2020-2021 Pittsburgh

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did most of you take VITA before or after your interview and why? My email says we have 10 days to take it after our interview, so I was gonna wait till the last minute lol. But I'm curious if people felt that it will help you prepare for the interview or whether interviewers will review it if you take it prior?
I completed mine for another school several weeks ago, so it is complete before my Pitt interview, scheduled 1/6/21. I think it's good to complete for prep purposes because all the questions I keep coming across in secondaries, CASPer, VITA, and interviews are so similar.

I can't speak to whether interviewers/adcoms will actually review it prior to my interview, but Pitt SOM did already show up on my VITA update email as requesting my VITA responses.

I signed up for a couple info sessions that occurred this past week a while ago and just realized that I accidently missed them. Is it possible to reschedule and is attendance taken? I thought they were on the same week as my interview day and completely forgot
I’ve done this for multiple sessions because I’m scatterbrained and can’t use a calendar or remember time zones lol. I was able to reschedule them in the interview tab on the portal. Lord I hope they don’t take attendance.

Anyone know why there's such a great discrepancy between the MSAR MCAT data and what PittMed shows on their website? The average on MSAR is a 518-519 while the PittMed website says 515. Obviously I'll go with what the PittMed website says, but I just thought that was a bit odd.

Also was anyone granted an interview here with lower than a 515?

If the average is 515, then I can guarantee that people have been granted an interview with lower than a 515.

Median and average are different stats!

Yes, considering their MSAR 10th-90th for accepted students is 509-523

To add to this, make sure both numbers represent matriculant average/median. MSAR defaults to accepted student stats. Also, the school website and MSAR are likely showing data for different class years. MSAR shows for class entering in 2019, the school website likely shows for class entering 2020.

Ohh I completely disregarded that! Thanks!

Lol I realize now that that was a stupid question. I guess I was assuming that with a 519 average on MSAR, that most acceptances on the lower end were ~515's.

Hey guys, for VITA, is there a visible timer or do you have to ballpark estimate 3 min in your mind?

Also, does anyone have any insight on what lois and updates play in admissions? On the website they said they're accepted, but during the actual interview, they were not mentioned. From what the dean said, it seems you get scored based on your interviews, primary, secondary, team exercise, and VITA. And those scores are added up. So idk if a loi or update would do anything, but if it adds a point or wahtever to your score, wouldn't everyone just send it?
IIRC there was a countdown timer for VITA that was on the screen

They only score #3 and #6. Not the entire recording.
Are all the questions the same for everyone? Or is it just that they’re picking 2 “random” questions and looking at those?

Anyone know what the team exercise is? It sounds strange to do over zoom

II about an hour ago! LM 72.9, OOS, URM, complete 11/04 (ik that complete date's insane!). I'm completely blown away! As this cycle progressed, I became more and more afraid that I would have no shot at a school like Pitt, and I almost didn't submit my secondary because of that and because I had waited so long to finally just shoot my shot. I'm so shook wow this year really is too much haha and my heart is struggling to keep up. Guess this goes to show it ain't over 'til it's over, my dudes! Hoping for similar results and As for all of us!

I'm interviewing here tomorrow. Can someone tell me a little more about what to expect?

-What's the "Intro to Pitt Med Interview Process"? Is it just something to watch? Is any part of this involved with their admission decisions?
-The faculty interview is just a standard 1 on 1 interview, right? And from what I've read, its about 20-40ish minutes long.
-And the student interview is just 1 on 1 as well? Will it basically be the same type of questions being asked as during the faculty interview? Should I just treat this student interview as if it were another faculty interview? (other than asking them student life specific questions and such)
-What's the team leader exercise like? How many people are in each group? And what are they looking for in this?

1) its part of the admissions day, not a video, they just talk you through the day
2)yes traditional and standard, about right time-wise
3) standard as well but I actually didn't even feel like it was an interview, my student interviewer told me she was my advocate for the admissions committee so that's how I treated it. unique honestly.
4)I think it was like 4-5 peeps, just discussing a casper/mmi/vita like scenario/question and showing you can work as a team. Don't be too extreme one way or the other, use common sense in terms of how you speak to others and how you present yourself. they want to make sure you won't be an overbearing team member and can work with others

Awesome, thanks! That really helped!

I had just had my interview today so I'll expand a little more about my experience for the other future interviewees here:
-The "Intro to Pitt Med interview process" was just one of the associate deans welcoming all of us (there were about 12 other interviewees there). We went around and all said our names/where we're from/what we like to do in our free time. Very low-stress.
-We then all went on break until our 11:00 faculty interview, which was my favorite part of the whole day. It didn't feel like an interview at all, and I didn't even get any interview-style questions, it was more just talking about my application and such. Although I think this wouldn't be what you should expect, even for Pitt. Pitt is known for having low-stress conversational interviews, but I think mine was even moreso because we had a lot of the same interests in terms of research and such.
-The student interview was a little weird for me. I don't know quite what it was, but I just didn't really vibe with the guy I got. I don't think I did anything wrong or answered any of his questions poorly, we just didn't have the type of connection that I thought we'd have. Not that I didn't like him or I thought he didn't like me, it was just very neutral.
-The team building exercise was also exactly as you said. It was 4 of us answering a non-medical casper/mmi question as a group. I think your advice was really good too: don't be too extreme, don't be overbearing, or don't be not contributing anything. I think they're looking more at how you interact with others rather than what your response is to the prompt, as long as its reasonable.

Overall it was a super low-stress interview. And I'm usually the type of person to get really nervous during these kinds of things too!

Does anyone remember the date that we are supposed to get post-interview decisions? I know it's in February, but for some reason I can't find the exact day in any emails.

Submitted in early Oct and probably have to wait until next year for that R 🙁

Does Pitt send post-interview rejections? Or are there only acceptances and waitlists post-interview?

Were rejections only sent to July complete dates so far?
