^Ditto to this. Would like to know the answer to this question since my SJT is coming up this week and apparently, it seems Davis doesn't think I'm NorCal enough.
I guess the only concern is that the SJT can't be rescheduled. What happens if I don't take the SJT and I happen to receive a secondary after my SJT passes?I can't see taking it if you haven't received a secondary. I won't.
Yeah, if you're from NoCal or Central Cal or with ties to NoCal, I'd go ahead and complete it. I don't have those ties and so this school as a bit of a long shot anyway.I'm still gonna take SJT. It's not even that bad, if the sample questions are any indication. Worst case scenario: I spend, what, an hour of my day clicking buttons for nothing?
I think I'm gonna skip the SJT. The practice test is too subjective.
EX1)
You are pursuing a two-week volunteer opportunity at a well-regarded local clinic. When you receive your course schedule, you realize the volunteer opportunity would conflict with your weekly required lab. This is the only time that the lab is offered this semester, so you are not able to make up the lab. Participation in the lab will count toward your grade. Please rate the effectiveness of each response to this situation.
Ask your lab instructor to identify a solution that will allow you to attend both. = INEFFECTIVE
While the student may have recognized the importance of attending the lab, they are placing the burden of identifying a solution on their instructor rather than taking personal responsibility and finding a solution on their own
EX 2)
You are assigned to a small group in your clinical skills course. One of your group members has recently struggled with their assignments. The group member is often late to sessions, prepares materials of poor quality, and needs numerous reminders to complete tasks. Your group receives a new assignment that is due in three weeks and will be graded based on the group's overall performance
Encourage the group member to speak to the professor about creating a plan to handle their workload. = EFFECTIVE
The student recognizes that their fellow group member has struggled with assignments in the past and identifies a potential solution. The behavior is effective, but not very effective, because the student does not take any action to collaborate with or help the student on their own or with their group
EX4)
For the past few days, you have been checking up on several patients, including a patient who is recovering from surgery. The patient has been in the hospital for one week and has not received any visitors. The patient is friendly, cheerful, and enjoys sharing stories about their career as a photographer. However, you are finding it difficult to politely end your conversations so that you can spend enough time with other patients with whom you were assigned to meet.
Ask your supervising doctor for advice on how to handle the situation. = VERY EFFECTIVE
Medical students are in the process of learning how to interact with and manage patients. Thus, it is reasonable for the student to request advice from a supervising physician who likely has significant patient management experience. This also shows an interest in learning how to care for patients under time constraints.
--
In all cases you are asking for a person in authority for advice, yet one is very effective, one is effective, and one is very ineffective.
I don't see why they are all not just ranked as Effective (The response could help but will not significantly improve the situation) since they all won't make anything worse but the amount of help is based on the response of the person you ask for help. And, the rationales could literally be swapped and still make sense. Are you not placing the burden on someone else in Ex2 and 4? Are you not recognizing struggles in Ex1? Why is it reasonable request advice in ex4 but not ex1?
I wouldn't lose hope quite yet. I looked in previous year threads and people got secondaries in September. I'm IS and haven't received any email from Davis. If I haven't received a secondary yet, is it safe to assume I've been screened out? For reference, I received the email from UC Davis indicating they received my AMCAS application on 7/13
the reasoning for these scores is found at the bottom of the document. It's more about demonstrating the core competencies rather than simply helping, not causing any change, or making things worse.I think I'm gonna skip the SJT. The practice test is too subjective.

I put the reasoning in bold. But those rationales could be swapped and make sense too. Like why is okay to ask the professor to help your group member in Ex2, but when you ask for the prof for help in Ex1 it is not good.

Agreed, I think it lies in the specific wording:I thought these answers were pretty distinct...
In Ex1 you have your own schedule conflict that is your responsibility to figure out yet you're asking your professor to identify a solution. This suggests you have the expectation that the professor should do your work for you. Actually going through with this would unequivocally demonstrate poor resilience, reliability, and communication skills.
In Ex2 you're not dealing with your own problem but rather encouraging a struggling group member to seek advice from the professor, which is good advice but rather passive. A very effective solution would be a more discrete and involved action, e.g. connecting your group member to student tutors, or scheduling a time to review material with him.
Way I see that one, you are a medical student in a new, clinical situation, *asking a higher up for advice*. A very useful thing to do in that scenario. You're not placing any responsibilities on said higher-up, nor are you dodging your own responsibilities. Simply seeking out advice (See: Capacity to Improve Core Competency).Ex4, asking your supervisor is VERY EFFECTIVE though. I mean both ex1 and 2 are putting responsibility on the professor are they not? Your just encouraging someone else to put their responsbility onto the professor. I mean in example 1, the professor could help you come up with a plan to manage your volunteer work and volunteer schedule.

just canceled it. you can do so on the portalHey I think I'm skipping too, but I already signed up for it. Is there a way to cancel? I feel like it would just be bad to not complete it when I'm scheduled to take it...

Davis is one of my top choices so this is nice to hear, can't wait until my SJT score sinks me though 😛You are in the game until you get rejected. I received that email from Davis last year in late July, and did not receive the secondary until mid-Septemeber, and then got an interview invite nearly 3 months after submitting the secondary, for an interview date 3 months after the date of the invitation. It can be a long process.
They aren’t requiring the SJT, just recommending it. So my assumption is yesDoes anyone know if UCD will send IIs without SJT score?
Not sure. I just took it, and while the test content itself is okay, it's kinda crazy how privacy invasive ProctorU is. Complete control of my computer, can close all of my programs, tinker with settings, record my screen, record my face. scary. deleted that **** as soon as i finished the test.Does anyone know if UCD will send IIs without SJT score?
Pretty sure yes. Scores aren't released for this until 10/14, and I doubt they'll wait that long to send their first IIsDoes anyone know if UCD will send IIs without SJT score?

Seriously. My proctor was trying to fix my camera settings and started typing things into my browser search bars and 'accidentally' clicked on one of my Chrome bookmarks....?? All before my computer crashed (not the first time with ProctorU) and I wasn't allowed another attempt. I don't think I'll be trying to schedule a retake. Not sure. Agreed, I left feedback about it on the survey after.
For anyone who hasn't taken the SJT yet or used ProctorU before, they require you to show a full 360 of the room you are sitting in, what you are sitting on, and use your phone's front camera to show them the computer you are using. Then you put the phone down and show them where you put it. While they are recording. The whole process took over 20 minutes to start my test.
the AAMC emailed me 6/16 to let me know one of my schools required the sjt and I should register. you could try reaching out to the aamc, they have a separate page and email for sjt stuff.I never got any instructions to take the SJT. I've checked my email and portal several times and can't find anything about it. How did people get notified to take it? Should I take it anyway? I completed the Secondary on 8/2

does anyone understand how joining a student support group on how to cope with stress is only "effective" not "very effective" on the practice SJT??? #10
still no secondary.. anyone else in the same boat?
IS, but SoCal!Are all of you who are waiting for the secondary from OOS?
also instate and SoCal. This is the last UC I am waiting on but I am stressing a littleIS, but SoCal!
They said it was optional so I can't imagine it'll hold much weight this year. Here's a link about it: https://health.ucdavis.edu/mdprogram/admissions/pdfs/SJT-FAQ.pdfDoes anyone know how UC Davis will use SJT?

I am also IS from SoCal, but I got the secondary 2 weeks ago. I have below average stats tho, so I'm not sure how they are screening for this secondary. The one I haven't received is UCR
Secondary received today! I was verified aug 23. Is URM low stat.received secondary today was verified on Aug 20

I just selected the quarter option and didn't convert quarter to semester. For quarter system courses, are people inputting the units as they're listed on the transcript or breaking it up? (I saw someone say they put 2.67 units for a quarter class?)
From what I read the SJT scores do not get released to schools until October 14th - I took it on September 2nd and received my secondary Sept 8th, but I don't think Davis has the scores....Did anyone receive a secondary after taking the SJT?
