2022-2023 UCLA (Geffen)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do you happen to know if we can have more than 5 letters in the packet? In mine, I have the committee letter (which DGSOM said they will count as one letter) and 6 individual letters, but I know they ask for 3-5.

My committee packet has 6 individual letters + 1 committee letter. They have to manually mark this requirement as complete for me after I emailed them. I guess they wont look at the last one?

Primary verified 7/23 and received secondary invite an hour later on 7/23. I thought it would take a while since they supposedly do a holistic review but not sure.

Not sure if anyone is my situation. primary got verified on 7/19 and then added UCLA on 7/25 and got secondary invite by next day.

So far I did not register for AAMC Preview it seems next possible test dates are 9/14 & 9/15 and results come out only Oct 25th.

UCLA has deadline of Sep 30th. Not sure what to do at this stage.

September 30 is the deadline for your AMCAS primary submission, which you have already done.
If you're concerned about the date of your PREview test, reach out to admissions office & let them know when you will be taking it

Thank you!

Per UCLA web site.
"Your PREview exam score is required to complete your application and should be provided as early as possible in the application season, but no later than the application deadline date of September 30, 2022"

I will try to reach out to admissions office and check my luck.

I didn't find that line - sorry! I hope they will give you a little leeway

Anybody knows how heavily the PREView score affects your app at UCLA? Just got my score back and man . Not too bad but 59 percentile makes me uneasy.

Let us know what they say I am in the same boat right now.

I was 4th quartile casper and got a 4/9 on preview. It is all made up and unreliable anyway. I don't think this is going to be the thing that makes or breaks your app.

Does anyone have a way to contact the admissions office? I can't get through on the phone number listed, and I'm not sure if I should schedule the Sept. preview since the scores do not come out until October :/

Got a reply from them saying it is holistic process...so on..no clear yes or no.

so I presume we better submit secondaries and try taking test in Sep for Oct results.

If you heard something different please update here.

If you can’t get a hold of anyone for the next week, on Wednesdays, they hold office hours over Zoom that are pretty helpful. I think it’s 12-1 PST but not sure

How do you guys think it will be interpreted if my most important volunteer work is not one of my most meaningful experiences?

Did anyone get a complete email after submitting? Mine says complete in the portal but i never got an email. Wondering if it matters?

Hey did anyone receive a secondary for UCLA without receiving their MCAT Score? I dont know if they dont use the MCAT to screen for those who do get secondaires. Please lmk???? I know that schools like UCSD, gives secondaries to those without MCAT. Since they only use the MCAT to make decisions after you have been invited for an interview. SO just checking

Probably no biggie (I hope.) My most important volunteer experience was not one of my most meaningful experiences. I had 2 meaningful clinicals and one meaningful employment activities. The volunteer experience I talked about in my secondary, though important to me, did not make the cut for the most meaningful/impactful to me in my primary.

Anyone get a secondary without an MCAT?
@wavyboys21 you have asked this question several times - Haven't you taken the MCAT yet?
I'm not sure your statement above is correct - I'm sure most schools want to see an MCAT before inviting someone for an interview, not for making decisions after an interview.

I wasnt talk about an interview. I was talking about the secondary. No i am waiting for my scores to come out which would be late

Does anyone here happen to know UCLA's policy on MCAT expiration (I took mine in 2019)? I cannot seem to find this information on their website

from MSAR: "Oldest MCAT considered January 2017" so you're good - I think many AMCAS schools are closer to a 3 year expiration

Any idea if MSTP applicants are also screened like everyone else? I added UCLA yesterday afternoon, received confirmation at 2am, then got a secondary at 3am PST. Little baffled cuz I was expecting to wait at least a few days before hearing anything. I didn't think there was anything particularly outstanding about me either lmao

"2) Respond to the following and indicate how these areas of experience have impacted your progress toward your future career goals in relation to becoming an "Outstanding Physician, AND...".
A-Describe your most unique leadership, entrepreneurial, or creative activity. (800 characters)

B-Describe your most important volunteer work and why it was meaningful. (800 characters)

C-Describe your most scholarly project (thesis, research or field of study in basic or clinical science or in the humanities) and provide the total number of hours, dates and advisor. (800 characters)"

Uhh, does this mean we need to respond to all 3 essays?

Yes

"5) Do you identify as being part of a group that has been marginalized (examples include, but are not limited to, LGBTQIA, disabilities, federally recognized tribe) in terms of access to education or healthcare? If yes; Describe how this inequity has impacted you or your community and how educational disparity, health disparity and/or marginalization has impacted you and your community. (800 characters)"

How should I respond to this essay? I am high SES ORM and don't feel like I have been marginalized, but maybe I should write something?

Hi friends, quick question. So if my preview exam score is set to release in mid-august, does that mean my app will not be in line to be reviewed until that day? I've already submitted my secondary/MCAT/LORs. Thanks!

No one knows if they will look at it before your score comes out but according to the emails I've gotten from them, you cannot be invited for an interview if you don't have a PREview score.

Why not email them ?!

For updates, do we have to wait until an abstract is accepted to send to UCLA? And would we have to write an update letter, or just upload our completed abstract? Thanks!

I just missed my AAMC PREview test today because I didn't realize it was in military time!!! 😱 But before I sent a panicked email to DGSOM I checked their website again and they changed the wording for their requirements:

"Your AAMC PREview exam score is required for the full review of your medical school application and must be taken by the Sept. 30 application deadline."

This means I can still take it in September and be eligible to apply. But the score will not be out until October 25 so I guess they won't review my application until then. Terrible anxiety-filled day but at least I still have a chance of applying to UCLA...

same thing nearly happened to me, but I was ready to take it 2 hours before (did the -2 twice!). Best of luck.

Just an FYI to all: at the office hours today I asked how they view the PREview score. Apparently, they used to hold both MMIs and traditional interviews but now they have essentially replaced the MMI with PREview. So the way it sounded, the PREview isn't really looked at until after you receive an interview (it is still required for your application to be considered complete though).

Also, I asked when interviews are sent out. He said they typically send them in September (although I thought it was usually mid August, so idk about this one).

As always, good luck to all

Just to confirm, UCLA does not require or explicitly recommend letters from science faculty? I do have letters from science faculty but I don't think they're very strong. Do you guys think this would be looked upon negatively?

Hi all, silly question but when you’re sending your primary app to UCLA but are interested in PRIME, do you put the regular MD program and then put PRIME in the secondary? Or are you supposed to click the combined degree program option first?

The website says regular MD then choose, but I had a friend last year who chose in the primary. I really gravitate towards PRIME’s mission but I’m not sure how the regular MD program would look at me so just want to be sure I’m selecting the right program!

From my understanding, you should click the Combined Degree program option in AMCAS because this will add the PRIME supplemental questions to your secondary. I do not think you can apply to PRIME-LA without selecting it in your primary, but I could be wrong. The PRIME supplemental questions are mandatory for submitting the secondary if you choose the Combined Degree option, so you cannot opt out after choosing it in your primary.

In addition, on the PRIME Supplemental page, there is an option to select "I would like to be considered for the Regular MD program in addition to PRIME-LA"
"In choosing this option to have your application considered for the Traditional MD track, in addition to the PrimeLA or MSTP track you have selected, your application will be reviewed for each track independently. The Traditional MD track requires applicants to take and submit AAMC PREview exam scores in order to complete the application."
