2022-2023 UT Houston (McGovern)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
In-state II received today, 510 MCAT, 4.0 GPA, ORM. It's my first II ever! I wasn't expecting any attention from Texas schools since I prioritized AMCAS and wasn't complete until late August, but I'm ecstatic. Definitely nervous because I'm not great at interviews, but I'm gonna try to do as much research and practice as much as I can!
What dates did they have as options for interviews?

I can't really mention how the interviews are going because they made us sign an agreement to secrecy, but the interviewers are super sweet and not scary. They really read your application and ask questions regarding your personal statement, secondaries, and activities. They are blind to everything except name and (primary and secondary) essays.

My interview day was great. I wasn't nervous and I wasn't grilled. My interviews flew right on by and I loved both of them. I think our experiences are subjective and really depend on the personality of the interviewer.
My experience is more similar to this. My interviewers were very sweet, but that could’ve just been an illusion and they thought I was the worst person ever😂

For me, I was asked about my PS, MME activities, my initial struggle in school/medical condition (in another essay) and then some standard interview questions. I was interviewed by one faculty and one med student.

Same here, I liked the interview day, both the faculty and Student I interviewed with were very kind.

There was at least one other person in this thread who felt he was asked questions that were quite tough but was able to come up with correct answers. Not every interview you do will be comfortable and some people want to put you in adversarial situations to see how you react. Medicine is a tough field and interviews are the only easy part.

Can anyone speak to the timing of the two interviews? Do you have both of them back to back or at least in the same time block, or could they be spread out randomly (like one interview at 10:40 and then another at 1:20)?

Random. One can be at 12 and the other can be at 2. Or they can be back to back.

Dang, another thing to worry about 😅 maybe I’ll get lucky and at least have them both in the earlier time block. Thanks for the quick response!

Just got an email for second look tours!! I hope this is a good sign! Fingers crossed for pre-match (definitely fine with waiting until March as well though hahaha)
Same here, but I have a feeling they sent it to everyone that interviewed.

Hopefully I can schedule this and baylor's on the same date since I do not anticipate making the drive down twice

I will say there's only in total 200 spots available across all the dates, so if you get the email I would book your open house date ASAP if that's something you want to do.

Is it too early for an update letter? Submitted 07/10.
If you have substantial updates then I don't think it is a bad idea to send it.

However, an important caveat would be whether mcgovern actually allows application updates. I'm not entirely sure what the answer is, maybe @wysdoc would know the answer.

The McGovern Interview Day packet and Curriculum video (it has information about McGovern and possible answers for your Why Us question, plus it's good information for future applicants):

Now that's a strong match list.

The portal for UTH has an updates area. It will tell you if you are allowed to submit before an interview or not.

Can you explain where you see that on your portal?
Unfortunately I am not an applicant. UTH portal should not be that complicated in terms of where you upload your secondary and what other options it allows outside of secondary. Either an option exists or it does not.

Yeah from last I checked I do not see an option to do so. I also can’t find anything on their website regarding it.

The portal states "We only accept application updates or additional Letters of Recommendation after you have been invited to interview." but I wanted to ask because it doesn't state how they accept them, so I didn't want to email them if I'm supposed to have a spot to upload and it just hasn't been applied to mine yet or something.

perfect I do remember seeing that I just couldn't remember exactly where. Glad you found it!

I know they provide guidance whether you can do it or not. This statement makes it clear that if you have been interviewed, you can provide updates.

So if you have received an interview, something should open up for updates. If you have not been invited, you should not expect it.

@hadv3r do you see a way to upload updates?

Is McGovern pre-match heavy?
No, very selective. My guess would be they dont fill more than 40-50% of the seats and many are probably already predetermined like JAMP or whatever other programs they accept for.

I've already interviewed.

They said they only send ~50-60 prematches and their class size is 240 so even less than 40-50%

Not sure how JAMP students they admit but I dont think they are considered prematch.
Yeah I’m really not sure how JAMP works at all when it comes to acceptances. I know they’re guaranteed to match but not sure if they wait till March or they all just get outright accepted next week

They have a separate match apparently

the question really is how many seats are filled at UTH by JAMP and any other Auto programs.
Rice University has 8 guaranteed seats at McGovern each year. McGovern Medical Partnership

JAMP is just a guaranteed admission to a Texas school, not a specific school. I don’t know how popular McGovern is amongst JAMP people.

I haven’t heard of other auto admit programs

Interesting. I have never heard of this program. There used to be programs for UT Austin and University of Houston, both of which since have been scrapped. So there was still a question of what else exists.

Is it correct to day JAMP students can have multiple admissions and not restricted one school overall until match day? So on October 15th they could receive several admissions and that is the only day they get admissions (no deferrals, waitlists etc?).

JAMP is just for low-income applicants and their match will be binding.
I’m not up to date on the Rice/McGovern agreement, but some other college-to-med school pathways in TX have been phased out over the last 10 years.
