2023-2024 UT Southwestern (UTSW)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They got too excited with football draft picks this round. 🙂 Don't worry there are round 2, round 3 etc.

People assume it is purely dependent how the interview went it is not always that way. The school is trying to build a diverse class while trying to ensure future interviewees get looked at too. My guess is they filled half the class in this round and so there should be many more admits to go.
Would you say that if you didn't prematch this round, it's more likely to get in through the match vs. waiting to get a prematch later? esp since UTSW is a prematch-heavy school

There are additional rounds of prematches at every school in Texas including UTSW. When you call a school prematch heavy, you are counting all the rounds before match. People assume most seats are taken ahead of the match which is the reason a school would be called prematch heavy.

During the match, UTSW will lose some students to Baylor making more seats available.

Congrats to everybody that has pre-matched/been accepted! I have my interview coming up soon and was wondering if the interviewers have access to stats? Thanks!

my acceptance email says I'm guaranteed a $1000 minimum scholarship and I'm dying to know how much it is lol... do any of you guys know from experience/precedence if it's going to be more than the minimum? when does financial aid info typically get released?
Pro tip: if a TMDSAS school gives you a $1000 scholarship, you are automatically allowed to pay in-state tuition.
Look at the differential between IS/ OOS tuition.
In effect you will be paying $1000 less than an IS student.
Such a deal!!!

Haha thanks! that puts it into perspective -- it's more like a $14k scholarship!
I think it is 11k or so since the price tag is usually 10k difference between IS and OOS + 1k.

EDIT: Looks like you are right. They have been raising prices to make it look better!

If you attend MD/MPH, they made it sound like it gets to be even better for OOS during last years presentations. UTSW started offering MPH starting this year and until now UTSW were taking it in McGovern.

is there anyone at utsw I can reach out to with some questions regarding the school/academic environment?

Welcome to the family!

My advice now that you are accepted is to attend the Visit Days (first one is Nov 10!) and second look aka MS0 weekend January 26-27.

UTSW will have many current students at these events for you to talk to and exchange numbers with for future questions. Also, a current student may be texting or calling you closer to match day to answer any last minute questions

UTSW is a fantastic school–in my opinion, the best!–so definitely come visit and talk to people who are here 😄

II for UTSW MSTP program!! I also applied for the regular MD program but have not heard anything back. I was told the admission committees for these programs are separate at UTSW, however, would it be possible for an applicant to interview for both or will they only interview for one or the other

Congrats! Completion date?

Hi all! To those who prematched in previous years: is it rare to see scholarships awarded post-prematch? I was not given one with my offer. Thanks!

Any speculation on when the next supposed round of prematches may be sent out for UTSW?

Based on last year the 2nd round of prematches seemed to fall on or around 11/18. The year before it was around 11/1 so I'm holding my breath for that date lol

Seems like a lot of the Texas schools have another round of prematches around that time.

I have heard of this happening, but it seems relatively rare. You probably wouldn't hear until next spring about that if I had to guess.

are there any admitted students platforms/groups yet? or is that something that happens post-match?
I don't think the invite has been sent out yet, but there will be a Facebook group. I think it will go out in November? You should only join the one with Suzette Smith (UTSW Student Affairs) in it. Any other Facebook group is fake/an advertising company.

Do they mainly prematch people who interview in oct/nov in the second round? Are there people who interviewed very early who got in in the later rounds?

Have they sent a second round of IIs yet, not expecting much cause my stats are quite out of range lol but just wondering
Follow the Interview Invitation days here: #2
But I can only post what y'all share with me on SDN, I don't have any inside source

So my interviews coming up in a few weeks and I noticed they split applicants into an A and B group for interviewing, then they have an “optional” session at the end. Is this truly optional?? Because otherwise if we’re assigned the early group are we just supposed to sit around waiting until they finish the other interviews or is it ok to leave?

There is a student panel that happens while the other group is interviewing. I don't think that one was optional.

Can confirm the wrap-up session at the tail end wasn't mandatory.

I am kind of curious why anyone would want to miss anything during their interview day whether it is optional or not.

If there is a wrapup session and it is the dean or someone wrapping up, you want to know what they are saying.

Medical school admissions are a high stake poker game equivalent. It is very hard to get into a school like UTSW and only reason not to take every opportunity to make an impression on the interview day is because one has already an admission somewhere else (I wouldnt give this leeway on October 1st but it is possible now).

Have any new interview invitations for regular MD gone out in the month of October?
You can DM me if you don't want to post on the public thread. M'kay, thanks!
I would love to know as well! Looking at last year, they had IIs going out into November... But radio silence on here for the past month.

Tbh this would make me feel better as I have been thinking they overlooked me. But I don't think I got my secondary to them soon enough to be considered for the most recent II date on 9/26, so I would be counting on future II dates to hopefully secure one. Very interested in hearing from UTSW so I hope it pans out!

can any current students speak on the class modality/teaching style? are the lectures recorded or mandatory in-person? is it more individual/self-taught or group-based PBL?

If you are referring to preclinical: Lectures are recorded and attendance is optional. PBLS and small group, as well as dissection, are mandatory.

I saw that @MCAThiccy had like one of those screenshots last year of like all the interview weekend dates like in a post interview survey and I was wondering if anyone had that so we can see the remaining dates 😀

how often are the PBLS, small group, and dissection in a week? I'm from the area so I'm trying to see what it would be like if I just lived at home and commuted

It is normally easier to attend classes from home if you have less than 20-30 minute commute and it is a predictable commute.
People in Dallas and Houston do this regularly

It is harder to do so during rotations since hours can be all over the place during different rotations and you could be very tired or sleep deprived to drive long distances.

I dont see any messages that you are prematched to UTSW. Are you prematched?

Dissection is 1-2 times a week first semester until mid November, when anatomy ends. PBLs/small group roughly once a week depending on the class. I forgot to mention colleges and SIM Center (it's been a few years, sorry) which are also mandatory in person, and those are Wednesday/Thursday. And of course quizzes and exams, which are mandatory in person.

Plenty of students commute from Plano, Frisco, etc. However, it is difficult as the first semester you are required to be on campus almost every day for a few hours betwwen all your dissections, PBL/small groups, quiz/exams, colleges, SIM center, etc....

For example, in the first semester you could have:

Monday - PBL 1pm-4pm in person
Tuesday - nothing in person
Wednesday - colleges in person 1pm-3pm
Thursday - SIM center (standardized patient/procedures practice) 1pm-2pm
Friday - Quiz 9 am-10am in person and dissection 2-5pm in person

After first semester, the rest of preclerkship has a bit less mandatory in person stuff on different days. To be honest, your life will be a lot easier as a student if you live close to campus since being closeby makes it easier to participate in stuff that can only be done on campus like shadowing, some electives, some research, etc.

UTSW owns an apartment complex called MedPark where about half the medical school lives. They hold the rent at MedPark at roughly 40% below market value for the area so that it is affordable. That place would be my recommendation. UTSW also collects information and student reviews on all the apartment complexes in the area, and you'll receive that information in a packet at second look.

You will receive detailed information on the curriculum during second look, so I would save your questions until then if possible. UTSW is also revamping its curriculum all the time, so some things I recall are no longer true. Some classes from my year are already completely different (I assume in a good way) now. UTSW does end of course surveys for every class and seem to actually read the responses and implement the feedback

How popular is the MD/MPH program at UTSW? Any idea on # of students in each class that participate?

this is the first year UTSW started offering MPH program of their own. All these years people were taking classes at UT Houston for MPH.

It is very popular. I would say ~20 per class with the number increasing since UTSW just opened their own school of public health.
