Hey all, I have a quick question about the essays, when they ask what field of medicine we are most interested in, do they also want us to write out why?
and the same goes for the one asking about the most meaningful volunteering experience.

I explained the reasoning, yes. I think an answer would be incredibly incomplete if you left it out. Same goes for the volunteer experience... I mean what are you going to say? "I want to be a pediatrician." or "Being an EMT was very meaningful." and just leave it at that??

I am REALLY effing frustrated trying to get this thing out. I've had my essays done for a few days now and everytime I try to submit I get a different error at a different place. grr

Because mine was 'neurology', I didn't include anything else. Maybe if you have some compelling reason, you can include it, but otherwise they never ask why..

It's just on their actual secondary, the place where you fill in your 3 LOR writers, it is implied that each one needs to be a faculty member. Sorry for the confusion as I didn't mention it on my first post.

How would that not meet the requirements? You have three letters, two from science professors, which is exactly what it asks for.

But, stick in there, Tulane! I've been keeping posted of Gustav (and holding off purchasing my New Orleans plane ticket for my 9/29 interview...) and it's not looking good 😳

I'm trying to finish the Tulane secondary, but I keep getting this error when I try to click on a tab or save:

Not Found

The requested URL /pls/apex/f was not found on this server.

Anyone else get this too? I tried accessing the secondary on Firefox and IE, but no luck with either. Also, it was working a few days ago for me.

Don't know if you've been watching the news but we just had a pretty good sized storm pass through the region and there have been some power outages and the campus was part of that. So it might not be 100% for a few days. Patience is a virtue.

anyone figure out what to do if you have the fee waiver? there isnt any info in the instructions behinds the fact that they accept it. im ready to submit once i figure this out.

has anyone actually received a complete email?

Just got the invite today, so now I see what you guys were bitching so heartily about. That is absolutely hands-down the very worst format for a secondary application I've seen yet. I read the instructions and I still don't know how to fill out the damn thing. Guess I'll read this thread again.
I'd say "screw it" if I weren't totally willing to consider Tulane (and hope they'd consider me too). Sheesh.

I had a little trouble figuring out what they wanted for that question as well. I called the admissions office and they said they just wanted like a brief description of what you're currently doing. I think I wrote like research and volunteering or something considering you could only fit like 4 words in that space anyways.

from my understanding from reading this thread, all the essays have a 1000 character limit, except one of them has a 500 char limit. which one is the 500 one?

is everything EXCEPT the leadership question 1000 characters?

I just received an interview invite today. Does anyone that has interviewed there already have any info/tips?

I wrote about neurology too. I think I probably mentioned Oliver Sacks in there somewhere. 😍

do you guys think that saying whether you will apply for tulane financial aid affects your chances of acceptance??

yo yo...has ANYONE been able to pay the reduced fee waiver of 50 bucks? I finished my secondary but havent paid it...should i put pay $50 for the suggested price of $100? how would they know that im fap applicant?????????????????????????????

Wouldn't that be illegal in some way?? I don't think that it can affect it.

yeah i FINALLY got ahold of someone. they said just to type in $50 in the payment box and it will go through.

is anyone else having issues with their secondary? i have been getting "URL not found" and "404" errors" every time I click on the 2nd tab at the top of the secondary. i have called them, and they said to send an email about it..still no reply from them. any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem right now. I also sent an email. Put up a post if you've heard anything back from them.

Thanks.

I called them twice and emailed them. I was surprised by how rude the person was in their admissions office. Before I even finished the question, she blurted out in a rude tone "if you are calling to check your status, its too late." Then I explained the problem, and she said send us an email. She didn't even try to help me.

I have never experienced this kind of rudeness from any medical school office or even undergrad office. Most medical school personal I have talked to are extra courteous, while this woman from Tulane was the exact opposite.

Is Tulane School of Medicine known for this kind of behavior? or was this just an isolated incident?

Very similar thing happened to me, so its not isolated...Its probably the same person, but still.

That sounds familiar, but I don't hold it against them. Out of all the times I called there were only one or two times that someone was a little rude. I would probably be irritable too if I got 1000 calls per day from neurotic applicants.

Does anyone know if Tulane accepts AP credit for English?

pay $50 if you have been approved for the waiver. they know that if you pay $50 that you aren't stupid enough to be lieing to them since they can check that through AMCAS.

I called a few weeks ago to see if I could get my interview date changed, and the woman I spoke to was really accomodating and nice. Since there wasn't a spot available on the day I needed, she said to call back in a few days and if anything opened up, she'd hold it for me. I called back a few days later, a spot had opened up, she had held it for me, and I was able to confirm it. I guess it could have been a different person that I talked to, but my experience with their admissions office was completely different.

My experience with Tulane has been very positive as well. I had to reschedule my interview date because of a course conflict and the lady with whom I spoke, Susana Vargas, was very accomodating. The electronic files were not working the day I called and she took down my information by hand and said she would reschedule and confirm for me when it was back up. I called once before too, to confirm my application was complete. I spoke to someone else but she was also very cordial.

Keep in mind that a lot of schools are flooded with people calling, emailing, etc. about their statuses and scheduling/rescheduling interviews. Of course, we assume that it is part of the admission offices' job to handle inquiries like this, but we can all understand how getting dozens of these calls each day can make anyone a bit irritable, esp. since there are many other jobs these folks need to handle. I've encountered some fairly rude and curt people over the phone as well, at other schools. But I figure let's just be patient and hopefully everything will work the way we want! 🙂

Fair enough🙂. Thanks for the insight.

But I like to gauge the schools, just as they are doing to us. I think we as applicants also have a reason to be irritable with the amount of work we put into each and every application and all of the follow up we have to do regarding each secondary. However, we always find a way to be courteous and put forth our best impression. I expect the same from the medical schools that we are applying to, especially one which charges $100 for its secondary.

Don't get me wrong, I do understand what you are saying. Its probably just best to give the benefit of the doubt.

Compared to previous years, is Tulane taking a little longer with the interview invites?

I don't know, I got my interview invite back in mid-aug, and interview tomorrow. it seemed like quick turnaround, but I was complete very early - maybe they are just getting backed up now?

EVERY TIME I TRY TO SAVE MY APPLICATION IT GIVES ME AN ERROR MESSAGE. How am I supposed to submit if it won't apply my changes? This is not the first day this has happened. adslkfjadslfkjasldkfj

There is a character limit for the responses. You have to make sure you are under it or it gives you some cryptic error message. Try a different browser as well.

Is there any way to check our status at this school?

Call 504-988-5187 between the hours of 10am-2pm Central time on Tuesday or Thursday for your application status.

Yeah def. call to check your status. I called last week and my secondary and payment weren't found, so now IT is checking on it. Other than that, they were nice on the phone.

To those with interviews, did you get anything back after you emailed them to confirm your interview date? I sent it back a couple days ago, but didn't get a reply, is this something to worry about?

I received an email about a day later saying thanks for replying. A couple days before the interview I got a call asking me to confirm confirming I was coming, but I think this was because there were computer problems. The people at Tulane were very nice during the interview. Try not to stress out if you go.

Great, thanks for the info, i've heard they are pretty low stress over there, I will try to relax...

Stress level was through the floor. Amazing experience with the interviewers. Best of luck to you all. Check interview feedback for my complete review.
I'm interviewing next week so that's awesome to hear.

So I've finally figured Tulane out.

If you're calling to schedule an interview, they're super nice.

If you're calling to check the status of your application, they're super nasty and unprofessional.

Awesome.

OMG I agree! I called them today to check my status....as soon as the word "check" came out of my mouth I was rudely stopped and abruptly told that the system is down and there was nothing they could do...and had no idea when it would be back up. Really nice!

It's ridiculous. I didn't pay $30 AMCAS + $100 secondary fee for this kind of bullshyt treatment. It probably won't do any good, but I'll be writing a letter of complaint after the interview season is over.

I called today and the lady was very courteous with me as well, too bad their computer system was down and she couldn't check for me. Looks like I have to call back on Thursday.
