Does anyone know if UNC sends you any packet of additional information before the Interview? I have an interview Wednesday and am kinda worried and I might be getting the schools confused...if anyone has interviewed could you let me know... thanks.

You'll get an email with everything you need... nothing ever came in the mail for me...

does anyone have any last minute advice for my interview tomorrow? bring cookies maybe?

They have cookies. They're pretty good. The only other piece of advice I can think of is don't assume your interview schedule is fixed in stone, since the times and interviewers might change. (Mine got flipped in order and got bumped a little earlier)

Is everyone who receives the secondary definitely interviewed?

The instructions I received with the secondary says:

"Letters from individual evaluators should be in a sealed envelope, and signed across the back by the evaluator. If you should be invited for an interview the letters should then be submitted along with your supplemental materials. Please do not send evaluation letters unless you are invited for an interview. Applications without letters of recommendation are incomplete and will not be presented to the Committee on Admissions for review after the interview has taken place."

The "If you should be invited ..." bit makes me wonder if everyone who receives the secondary is interviewed?!?

I believe all IN STATERS who receive the secondary are interviewed.

OOS applicants are screened again post-secondary.

Anyone know about the time frame for the OOS post-sec screening, or the numbers? I remember it being dismally low... 🙁

Also, how ties to the state could affect the chances? I'm not a resident, but I'd really like to be.. (my brother lives right by the medical school as well)

Its something like 3000 applied 95 interviewed and 45 accepted.

Pretty good odds, once you get the interview 🙂

Yikes on getting the interview though!!!! Well, here's hoping to good news sometime! :luck: If only I could somehow become a resident... Does UNC allow in-state for the second year like some of the other schools out there?

I read somewhere else (still on SDN forums) that they do, I think it was the class of 2012 thread? in the allo forum

Thanks, found it! It looks like it is possible, the fellow in there said it's a bit difficult, but not too bad--many IS by second year, others by third, most by the end.

Anybody else get the "November Update" email today? I guess it's good news? I'm OOS and it has been a WHILE since I was complete, but they did a round of rejections last week and I somehow managed to survive past that, who knows. I'd love to check out the school via interview (who wouldn't).

I got it, too. I hope it's a good sign! Smells like a mass email, though.

I got that too, and I haven't even gotten a secondary. (Primary complete June 4) I'm waiting till they start sending pre-sec. Rejections, so don't get your hopes up.

Yeah, I got this today too. I called the office about 3 weeks ago regarding OOS interview timelines, and I was told by someone that my application was "being looked at as we speak" and that I should hear from them "any time now". Since then, there have been some rejections that I've survived (I was complete early Sept), so I don't know what this new message means. Are they really going to be in contact "soon"??

Same here. I'm surprised I haven't been rejected...yet. 🙂

Oh well, I'll take neutral news over bad news anytime. Keep the faith everyone 🙄, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!! So I'm interviewing at UNC on Monday (is anyone else?) and was just wondering if anyone has any last minute tips? I've been looking over the Interview Feedback Page, but only a couple people have posted from this season. I'd really appreciate any tips!:luck:

One more question....does anybody by any chance have an idea of how UNC makes acceptance decisions post-interview? Rumor has it that some schools consider all applicants "equal" once invited for an interview, while others still put serious weight on each person's numbers. Any idea how UNC functions? I'm SERIOUSLY hoping for the previous :xf:

I've heard that once you get there, they're very interested in how you'll fit into their class. That could just have been someone's opinion, but you never know...could be true.

*Any* chance of an OOS receiving a secondary at this point? (I added UNC late.)

I'm inclined to think "no."

well since UNC interviews like 60% of IS applicants, im pretty sure they would still weigh in numbers....

Hmm that makes sense. I'm OOS...but its probably the same 😎 just trying to be optimistic!

Accepted!!!!! Class of 2013 baby!!!!

Congrats! When did u interview??

sorry about that indescript post earlier. I was called about 6pm by my adcom rep. I'm sure I sounded like an incoherent fool on the phone but hey, I'm sure they're used to it. It was the last school I expected to get into IS this early. All the IS schools here take forever. Do not despair guys who have not heard yet, they review late into the cycle and the adcoms know when to advocate for your app. They advocate for the top students first as far as numbers(sept./Oct. for 4.0 40 mcat) then it gradually goes down from there. Most get admitted later in the year. This is all anecdotal and what I gleaned from interviewing. Anyone feel free to correct me. BUT DND. It is one less person going to the other schools in NC so good luck ALL! I am thoroughly impressed with ALL the nc schools. What a top-notch state to learn medicine.

how long does it usually take to get a secondary instate?!

it's been 3 weeks since eric's first email saying we have your amcas application.

i feel like no news here might be bad news...

secondary was like 4 weeks for me

Anyone interviewing Dec. 16? Got the email last Mon. (11/27) to schedule interview online, secondary was complete about a month before that. Good luck to everyone!

Schedule online?? Did they change something?

oy I'm starting to get anxious, after a hold and a waitlist at other places, I'm really hoping to hear good news.

Schedule online?? Did they change something?

Yeah, apparently that's why it took almost a month after their confirmation that they had received my secondary to schedule the interview: they were finishing up transferring everything to this online system. Haha, unless it's a sham, and the emails I've gotten have been from a Joni James (UNC's interview coordinator) doppleganger, I scheduled my interview for 12/16 using their new system.

the 6-8 week period that UNC mentioned that we would be hearing back by after interviews is over, and I have yet to hear back anything. anyone else in the same boat as me? :scared:

Me too! Monday was 8 weeks. But UNC made it clear at my interview that the 6-8 week thing did NOT come from them. They said it could be as soon as two weeks and as late as May or June....

lol it definitely came from them.

Interviewed oct. 28 accepted dec 1st .... What is that... 4 weeks?

Forgot...

Was looking over the forum from last year, and it seems like they gave out a majority of their acceptances at the end of January/early February...even for those who had interviewed as early as September...

So what did they say it meant if you didn't hear within the 8 weeks? Is that an automatic waitlist?

No, definitely not! I believe they decide at the initial meeting after your interview to "accept, reject, or hold" (not exactly in the those terms). If you are "held" then they bring you back up every so often until "accept" or "reject" is decided upon. Don't quote me on that, but from the people I've talked to, this is somewhat how it works. Like someone else said, they could decide "accept" during the first meeting in which you are discussed (or "reject"), but they could also "hold" you for 5 months. I'll stop using "quotes" now because I know it's getting "annoying."

But seriously, don't get down if you don't get in within 6-8 weeks. I know it sucks waiting, but that's the name of the game.

Did you send thank-you's or anything else? I am getting nervous about not hearing back yet (interviewed on the 20th), and am debating writing a letter of interest. Also, do they always call on Monday evening? Does anyone know what they do if they can't reach you? (I am overseas and would like to know if I should expect a phone call or something else...)

Thanks!

Yeah, haha, thanks. So far it looks like if you don't have a 4.0/40 you won't hear in that time period...

Ok... Here goes... Forgive me I am traveling from nyc back to nc and this is on an iPhone... I sent thx notes to my interviewers and jodi and randee. I emailed my adcom member to follow up on if she got the note. I think it's all about when your adcom rep brings u in front of the committee. If they bring you too early .. U have to compete with 4.0 and 40 mcat. It's about them picking the right time and marketing you the right way. Make a great impression and they will advocate harder for you.

I interviewed awhile back too and have not heard from them. I think it's just a slow process though... Hopefully we'll hear back sooner rather than later.

Yes UNC is very good about letting their second year students apply for in state residency and thus in state tuition. Most people take advantage of that.

What's this about "your" adcom member? Were we assigned a particular adcom member when we interviewed? I guess I don't really understand the process.
