...just got the call!!! Four more years as a Tar Heel!! 😍
Interviewed on the 9th of December.

Congrats!!! How exciting!

So what does this mean for everyone who interviewed before the 9th that hasn't heard yet? I thought we would get a "do not despair" email? Or does it just mean that we haven't been presented yet at all?

Check your messages ncguy.

this is really depressing. do you think the people that interviewed in sep/oct are toast? they must have reviewed us and moved on to the december people.

yea i'm starting to think this as well. I interviewed in september and am feeling like they focusing a lot more on december interviewees. I can't believe its been 18 weeks and no decision still.

I doubt it, They probably just put you guys in the maybe pile and will decide once interviews are all done.

globizen,

Congrats!

May I also ask who your adcom member was?

Thanks!

After some reflection (and really because I'm tired of sending out private messages), I'm just going to put it out there: Dr. Bashford was my adcom member. And yes, I'm in-state (despite being classified as out-of-state my four years of undergrad).

I just posted in the Class of 2013 thread, but I thought I would post here too...

I got my call on Jan 12th and I'm so excited to start in August! 🙂

(it was a little while ago, i know. i had been debating whether or not to actually post something on here.. i had read some threads but didn't make an account until today.)

Dr. Hoffman just called me, my first acceptance. I am in state and I interiewed in mid Oct.

I don't really post, but reading here has given me great support, thanks so much everyone! Goodluck.

Actually SHE did not, but she did make some small talk after she told me and I was so flabbergasted, I just kinda went along with it, it was kinda weird now that I think about it...

So the next adcom meeting is a week from this Monday? Or are they meeting this Monday? I noticed on last years thread at one point they started meeting once a week...

I dunno, but has anyone sent LOIs or update letters to UNC? Do they get added to your file or what?

I sent one, but I got in right before they would have received it

Hey does anyone know when the first day of orientation is? what about the Second look?

I sent a new transcript and LOI and got called about 1.5 weeks later.

I wonder if its a bad thing if you don't send an update? I have even gotten the DND letter...yet.

Sorry.. what's a DND letter?

and jwal, you called called 1.5 weeks later for an interview or acceptance? Sorry if these are silly questions. Looks like I need to get on a LOI if I want a call, and I can't quite tell if I want a DND letter... I'm thinking no right now...?

A DND letter is the "Do not despair" letter that I believe they send out around the eighth or ninth week post-interview.

I've sent two updates (one in Nov and one in Dec) with interest mixed in, but haven't gotten the call. I might write an LOI soon. Do you that might be overkill?

i am fairrrrrly sure they are not. they met last Monday. not 100% though

I don't think they (the main committee) are meeting today. I think the subcommittee meets today.

I was in the very first group to interview and I am starting to get a little nervous. Well very nervous. I am instate, I made a 36Q on the MCAT with 10VB 12PS and 14BS, GPA 3.5, A number of positions within my fraternity, clinical experiance in a medical clinic in Central America each summer for 5 years, a year of undergrad research and an honors thesis, and a couple other jobs and EC's here and there. I also took a year off where I have been doing research for a pharmaceutical company.

I thought I had the Med School formula down- only here I am more than 14 weeks later and no acceptance.

One thing- I interviewed for early admission and I didn't give a very good interview to Dr. Bashford. When I wasn't invited for early admission, I panicked and sent a frantic letter asking for another one. He was very nice about it, and offered me another one, which I took. Now I am thinking I may have shot myself in the arse by doing that. Or it could be another part of my application holding me back.

I have sent a letter of interest already, but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts as to how I could possibly resuccitate my chances. I have another recommendation I have thought about sending on too. I was thinking that may be a weak part of my application too.

Seriously? Hmm..

We have just about the exact same application. Same MCAT, similar GPA, even same/similar ECs. I wouldn't worry. Remember that most people get in during mid-late February. It's frustrating but it isn't a bad thing. Just remember, if they didn't want you, you would have gotten rejected by now. As annoying as it is, "no news is good news." Good luck!

I wouldn't really start to worry until the end of this month. (Did I really just say that? I worry every day!)

If anything is hurting you, it's probably either the PS or a LOR. I have been told that they will not read more than 3 letters, so it may not help to send another. Plus, if there were a bad one, it's already been seen.

I also have been told that the class is approx. 50% full.

theres your problem...you probably went into your interviews with that attitude.

Are you waiting on any other schools?

yeah. we have similar stats overall, except for GPA i guess. MCAT was 35Q and GPA is 3.95. I interviewed in early december and haven't heard anything. I graduated a year early and took a year off to do heart valve research and get lots of clinical experience. But, I hope they really start calling people soon. I have other acceptances but UNC is where I would like to go.

Sounds like you might have messed up the interview? First impressions mean a lot.

Also, all your stats looks pretty good. But, the quality of your undergraduate institution means a lot. A 3.5 GPA from Harvard is very good but a 3.5 GPA from a school like UNC-Wilmington, while respectable, will have you competing with a large group of applicants.

Additionally, I understand that if your undergraduate institution was UNC-CH, it might be even harder to gain entrance. Apparently they are forced to turn down a number of highly qualified applicants every year just to ensure a diversity of undergraduate institutions at their medical school.

I might have to agree. Even with a 3.5 from somewhere like UNCW, a 36 and a considerable amount of extracurriculars should weight out a bit.

Beginning of February--things are starting to get a little antsy around here! 🙂

I'm feeling it too! Does anyone know how the OOSers are doing? I'm still waiting on an interview. Am I out of luck?

im an OOSer who has still not heard from them post interview

I remember an admissions counselor from wake said something like "After your GPA is higher than a 3.5, there is little difference between two students at different schools with equal gpa's"

I may have misunderstood what he meant, but maybe that statement makes sense to someone here...

Same. When did you interview? I was at UNC in the beginning of December, so just crossing the 8 week mark. Haven't heard anything (no DND, either). I'm assuming that 50% of the OOS portion of the class is full, too? Ach!

I am OOS and also interviewed in early December and I am still waiting for some news. I don't think they have accepted too many OOS thus far

Another big day is upon us. Here's to hoping that a lot of our phones will be ringing tonight. Good luck, everyone!

Good luck to you as well. I am going to tape my fingers in a crossed position so that I don't accidentally uncross them throughout the day. It is going to make being a waiter a little more difficult for the day, but if it works....

I just got word today from a professor at UNC that because of the economy they are getting more replys than normal for the fall class and about 90% of the class is already filled!

I don't think this sounds too promising. Good luck everybody. Maybe I will go to Dental School instead.
