I got the call today too! I think I'm in state, but I'm not sure (grew up in Chapel Hill, but I've been living in san francisco and they have not let me know) I interviewed on Jan 20th. They called 6pm eastern. Good luck to everyone who is waiting!

Thank you everyone for the congratulatory messages!

To everyone else who heard tonight -- CONGRATS!

To everyone waiting: they give out a lot of acceptances in March, so don't lose hope!

to echo talkalot-- don't lose hope! I'm a re-applicant who was waitlisted the first time. Perseverance pays off! I wrote a LOI/update letter last week and I really think it made a difference. If you can show them this is really what you want to do, it helps. (I was a 30Q (7/11/12) / 3.2 GPA Ivy) my numbers weren't impressive but my experience must have pulled me through.

I officially lost hope yesterday. I'm just saying.
I am looking in to what I am going to do with another! year off. I might still get into ECU, but I am not sure if I want to go there. I interviewed Sept 15th. 36Q, 3.5 Biochem/Bio Double, Lots of Clinical and Research Experience. Pretty sure I corked my interview.

I was thinking about doing a summer program at Georgetown and then coming back to Chapel Hill to do some more research. Or maybe I'll move to Lake Tahoe and be a ski bum. Or maybe I'll travel across the country planting apple trees and telling folk stories. Who knows.

Don't lose hope. I'm a 3rd time reapplicant. I've posted similarly in other threads, but if this is what you really wan't to do, do it - no matter how long it takes. If being a physician will truly make you happy in life and you know you will get some fulfillment out of it, then DO NOT GIVE UP.

Best of luck to you!!

I feel the same way. I interviewed about 8 weeks ago now and sent in an LOI 3 weeks ago. I am starting to feel a bit restless knowing that there's not much I can do at this point but wait. Hate to reapply.. but if it comes down to that guess don't have much of a choice.

On the other hand, I believe this is the final week of interviews. Which means, they'll probably finalize their decisions relatively soon. So guess we won't have to wait too long to find out where we'll end up in August.

Well good luck to us all!

I interviewed the week of Thanksgiving so I am going on somewhere around 13 weeks. I still have hope. I feel a little let down every other Monday, but as long as the season is open there is a chance. I don't care if they don't accept me until the middle of July. I am in it for the long haul. Good luck everyone.

The Admissions office told me to wait 4-6 weeks before I hear anything. Do they tell that to everyone on the date of their interview?

they told me that in mid october and i heard back yesterday. the admissions presentation states 4-6 weeks but later after my interview, an adcom member said it can easily be months.

Gosh, 4 months seems like a long time. I just wonder how they operate. I thought the best time to evaluate a candidate would be a couple weeks after their interview. But, then again, I am obviously not on the admissions committee.

Congrats to all of you who got that wonderful call last night! And for those of you who are waiting...best wishes.

yesterday marked the 10 week point for me (I am OOS)

oh well...

This is how I have pieced together the process but don't trust that its 100% accurate. Its all info from adcomms and advisors. So they have one primary admissions committee then numerous subcommittees of around 3 adcomms. Your adcomm interviewer holds on to your file until he/she wants to present you to his/her subcommittee. They then decide if you should be passed on to the main committee. If not at the time, they put you back in the pile and the subcommittee looks at you again later, or again later, or maybe again later. Once you pass through the subcommittee the big decisions are made with all adcomms present.

So I'm assuming since I had a 4 month wait that I was rereviewed several times by the subcommittee until I moved to the next step. Maybe thats what happened to me and will hopefully happen to the rest of you waiting so long.

Congratulations everyone who got accepted!!!! You guys must be so excited! i'm still waiting to hear, but have kinda lost hope (interviewed in September). But all is good, as i'll be sure to apply again this summer with an updated application!

I heard something similar... what's the role that non-adcom member interviewer plays?

I believe the faculty interviewer fills out a sheet that is placed in your file.

I was told 6-8 weeks when I interviewed on 1/27. Anyone wanna start bets on their meeting next Monday as opposed to waiting the traditional two weeks? I think conventional wisdom was they started meeting every week at some point during the cycle.

Everyone keeps referring to the fact that the Adcom will start meeting twice a week. I looked back over last years thread and the year before and I have found nothing to substantiate these claims. They may just be rumors. Or not. I also didn't see much to make me optimistic passed the end of Feb which is why I have officially abandoned hope. I still have a small glimmer of hope that I can’t seem to stamp out. But I figure if my official stance is that I’ve been rejected and to plan accordingly, then I’m either right or pleasantly surprised.

It’s interesting that the FASFA filing deadline is March 1st, but a number of schools admit past that date. That would seem to screw over a lot of people. I have money saved for the first few years of school, but what if I didn’t?

no one has gotten a DND letter lately either? maybe it is time to be distressed.

Yeah, well, let's put it this way . . . UNC is still conducting interviews. They wouldn't bother to keep interviewing if they already filled the class. I'm hoping for the best and preparing for the worst.

I actually didn't receive any contact from UNC after my interview. I heard about these "DND"s and figured I was forgotten about.

The FAFSA filing deadline is March 1? Is that true everywhere, or just at UNC? I still don't even have all of my 1099 forms.

Here's the deal with FAFSA:

The priority processing deadline for UNC (not sure about other schools) is March 1st (note that this is not the filing deadline). In order to be considered for ALL of their available funds, you have to have a FAFSA form submitted my 3/1/09.

Obviously many people don't have their taxes done by March 1, so you can enter 2007 tax info and submit the FAFSA that way. Once you get your returns from 2008, go back into FAFSA and make "Corrections" and they will re-process your data.

If you submit your FAFSA after March 1, you are STILL considered for financial aid, just not from certain pools of money, so it's not that big of a deal.

I believe they told us during the financial aid meeting to declare UNC on your FAFSA reguardless of what you've heard about your status. That way you're on the safe side if you get accepted after the fact...

I interviewed on 12/17 and I still haven't heard anything! No, DND letter...nothing. I finally emailed the admissions office a few days ago just to make sure they didn't forget about me, and I got no response there either. I am fearing the worst....
any suggestions or kind words to calm my fears?
😕

the few times Ive emailed them as well, i havent gotten a response.

Same with me... don't think they like communicating via emails.
I think they've set up their second look dates to be end of march... guessing they'll be finalizing their decisions next few weeks. Kind of glad that it'll be over soon but fearful yet of not hearing back from them!

what exactly is the purpose of the second look? is it for prospective students to check out the campus again in order to make end of season decisions? or is it for the adcom to check out the prospective students again to see if they will get an invite?

It is my understanding that its the former rather than the latter- but perhaps someone who has actually been accepted could correct me if Im wrong. I'd be nice if they did have a day to go back over applications that have been set aside. I've got a feeling mine is in that stack.

I think the second look is for accepted students to come back and be re-impressed with the school to help with their final decisions as to which school to pick.

Yeah, Second Look is for students to come see the school again, meet faculty, ask questions and such so they can decide which school to attend.

This year, it looks as if it's going to be on March 28.

Call them. Thursday or Friday (I forgot which one) there are no interviews, so they are very likely to answer the phone.

About the FAFSA- Fill it out NOW. There is space for multiple school codes, so just put any school that you may attend.

Yeah, about FAFSA stuff... looks like UNC only has the one code for the entire university, no? Just wondering because other schools have separate ones for the med schools. Am I blind?

For "howabout", the nonadcom interview is to balance out the adcom interview. So if your adcom person hated you, but your nonadcom person loved you, the committee knows to take it all with a grain of salt and you're not screwed either way. They actually gave us a pretty in depth description of the process when I interviewed at the end of January.

Still waiting.....

That's good to know... I'm pretty sure I was debating over a moot point with one my interviewers!

Just to throw something in... my premed advisor told me that UNC has been very slow this year with giving out acceptances when compared to previous years... It could be that my university isn't getting that many acceptances, but I doubt it.. I go to one of the bigger in state schools and we usually have quite a few acceptances to my knowledge..

It's good to hear that. I hope that you are right. My roomate is in med school now and he told me that this is Dr. Bashford's first year as admissions dean. I really like him when I met him, but he could still be getting a handle on things or he could be switching things up a little. That April 1st deadline still seems to be set in stone though. If you haven't heard by then....

My roomate- the same one as before who is in medical school- said he also had heard that they were behind on admissions. Maybe this could be true then? But then there have been a very large number of people to get in off this message board, so we know some of the class fill estimates are accurate. I called Wednesday and talked to Joni. She was really nice- but said she had no clue about how full the class was. All I know is that we base a great deal on this site on Hear-say. Its difficult just to sit back when so much is at stake though. I turned in another LOI yesterday in person and mailed another LOR this morning. Grab your helmets-this is all out warfare now.

Well considering a new month is approaching, anyone think that the committee will meet this monday? Don't know how many seats they have left to fill but if they are to fill up the seats within the next few weeks and at the pace they've been going so far, don't think every other week deal will be adequate.

Just called.

Eric? I think said there were 40-50 spaces left.

And he said they would be accepting for the next two months. Then went on..blah blah...about how this is rolling admissions and it could take a while.

The AdComm will be meeting March 9th. As far as the number of spots left, it's all hearsay to be honest. I need to stay off this board, my heart actually beats a bit faster every time I press refresh.

so I know this forum has been 90% news about acceptances and guesses on adcomm meetings. but i have a question for everyone applying to unc: is anyone else a little worried about the seemingly uber-traditional curriculum? it seems like you don't even get to see patients (fake or real) until clinicals come. it seems like 95% of schools have gravitated towards this integrated curriculum but unc hasn't. i'm not even sure this is an actual concern for me- just wanted to get people's opinions.

You do see patients during the 1st and 2nd year during community weeks. You spend two weeks each year or semester in a community observing and helping out a local clinic. You also have a doctoring class where you learn how to do all the basics, mostly on simulated patients. When they moved to the block scheduling system this was a move away from the traditional curriculum, however they haven't moved to problem based learning.

Its only a week, the first year anyway. They assign you a preceptor somewhere in North Carolina and you shadow a doctor. You do this your very first semester. You will also have the ICM (Intro to Clinical Medicine) class where you learn clinical skills. Though its not real patients- you will see and treat actors and be critiqued on it. Which is probably better than real patients at that level of skill anyway. I actually think UNC has a much more progressive curriculum than any other school I've looked at- Esp ECU. There are definitely some problem based learning, though the school doesnt center its method of inquiry around it like some schools. PBL is where they give you a case study, and you learn about the causes and available treatments while researching your patient.
So, Jmillski, I am not worried about UNC being too traditional. I think UNC has struck an excellent balance between newer methods and the old tried and true traditional methods.
ECU was very traditional which was a little disappointing

Hi all! I'm an MS1 at UNC now and I LOVE it, and wouldn't contest the fact that I'm completely biased. We do see standardized patients very early on in our first year and every few weeks throughout the year, as part of a weekly clinical course called Intro to Clin. Med. that is basically Doctoring 101 (how to take a pt history, physical examination, differential diagnosis). Community week is twice your first year, three times your second year, where you go and work in a clinic for the week bookending a break. We do lots of PBL, and frequently have small group cases in which we work through biochem/anatomical basis of disease and treatment. I would say it is an excellent balance between trad. and PBL. There are also tons of opportunities to shadow or work in free health clincs if you feel that those aren't enough. Overall I adore our curriculum structure. Also, if you have suggestions for changing the curriculum the administration is phenomenally receptive (we have changed curricular approaches, and even test dates, just because students approached administrators with concerns). Also happy to answer any other questions you might have. Go Heels!

Hey guys,

Since the topic was brought up not too long ago, but I haven't seen much about it yet...does anyone else get a "Schedule for Second Look Weekend" calendar when they login to their SAS account?

I'm just wondering, and trying to be very cautious about how I feel about this as I have not heard any word ~six weeks post interview.

My login does the same. I doubt it means anything. I haven't heard yet either and it has that option. I am sure this is just a coincidence.

No....besides whats the point of seeing patients first year when we know jack squat?? Id much rather spend my time building up a good knowledge base first as opposed to fooling around taking blood pressures or whatever the crap they would have us doing.

id hate to go into the harsh rigorous grading of clinicals before even being exposed to a patient. we will be full of such nervous excitement (emphasis on the nervous) when we enter into clinicals, itll be nice to have some background and experience. I assume everything changes when you are actually facing a real patient, and id hate to learn of that change after the grading has begun. this is why, for me at least, patient contact is very important in the preclinical years
