how do you know for sure? did randee or joni tell you this today? they told me this morning that some acceptances may still be going out.......
Yeah, probably for people who are on the waitlist when spots open up.

The waitlist email they sent said "The class is now filled..." However, it isn't over until you have that rejection letter in your hands - maybe they were correct. Who knows - stranger things have happened.

yes, the class has been filled, but they made it sound like perhaps not everyone has been notified of their acceptance...
don't want to get anyone's hopes up or anything (because things do look pretty bleak), but they said that all remaining rejections and acceptances were sent out via mail...

I'm so frustrated. My mail just came with nothing from UNC in it, and I live in Chapel Hill. If they had really sent things Thursday, as they claimed, I definitely would have gotten it by today. I'm so tired of waiting, even though I know the news will probably be bad!

I have a feeling that the admissions office will always mention something vauge about admittance notifications so the callers do not 1. use the calls as a way to determine that one has been rejected and 2. so the callers do not break down on the phone if what has been said indicates anyone not admitted so far is rejected.

But like I said...who knows what goes on?

If it is one thing I have learned from this process, it is that speculating about admissions is much like playing roulette. There is no rhyme or reason for whatever the outcome is, and once the ball starts rolling, there is nothing you can do except hope for the best.

It is UNC policy to not let a candidate know that he/she is rejected over the phone.

As far as the mail goes, my acceptance in March took about 5 days to arrive in Durham from the time it was written. It also took 3 years of trying to get that acceptance.

But you already received a phone call letting you know you were accepted, right?

Mail in the triangle can take longer than it seems like it should...

The other week I sent something just 5 miles up the road (should have just driven up there to send it, but the post office is right next to campus so oh well, call me lazy!)

But anyway, the point is it took 2 days for USPS just to get the packet up there.

Raleigh here, nothing in the mail either. Eric did tell me on thursday that everything would definitely be going out that day. I'm guessing monday or tuesday in the mail.

so far most of our speculations were quite off the mark... i wouldn't be surprised if they haven't sent them out yet... i just want that piece of paper in my hands so that i can have some kind of a closure...

I talked to Joni and she said they sent acceptance/decline emails friday morning, and I told her I did not receive an email, and she said you should hear in a few days. Does this mean I am rejected??? Why wouldnt they have just emailed the rejection earlier, or atleast before the wait list? Is there more than one second look, why would they send out acceptances after second look?

All letters now are rejections.

and why would they waste the money mailing a rejection letter? why not do it by email like most schools?? has anyone been rejected recently from chapel hill?

My only guess is that she said "Mail" and not "Email" and maybe you just mis-heard her....

I am guessing all that is coming out is rejection letters though...

It seems so odd, because I had such a great interview there. I guess that just goes to show you never know..

Do they normally send rejections by mail? Have you heard of anyone getting acceptances in mail recently? I guess it would have to be rejection if second look has already happened.

I was waitlisted last year via snail mail and never heard anything until I got a letter in the mail that said something along the lines of "well classes have started now so I guess you are out of luck...". I don't recall getting a waitlist email, just a "do not despair" email which I didn't get this time around. I think they changed some things around this cycle. I did feel like I had a good interview this time around though, but no communication from the school really is pretty disappointing.

so everyone should check parents/permanent address mail too. My rejection letter arrived at my mom'e house yesterday even thought I listed that all correspondance should come directly to me. Congrats to everyone that got in and good luck to those on the waitlist!

Does anyone have any idea of how big the waitlist is?

Also, does anyone know if people do get in off the waitlist (based on previous years)?

I don't know why that posted so many times. Sorry everyone.

i'm waitlisted as well and i found out via email thurs afternoon...birdsbeak, people definitely get off the waiting list, i personally know people who have heard as early as may and as late as august...the possibility of one getting of the waitlist depends on your "relative" ranking, adcom and dean's final approval

I think anyone who hasn't heard anything (such as myself) should expect a rejection letter... I don't want any false hope! I thought my interview went well too, and its my third time applying, but you just never know with med school. I feel like I expect to get in this year, just because I've been trying for so long, but it's just not the case. There's no formula. I hope people who got waitlisted get in!! I talked to someone who goes there and he said usually around 20-30 people will get in off the waitlist, so there is a chance! Good luck!

Do you live in NC? can you tell us when the letter was sent?

Thanks for the update. Out of curiosity, where does your mom live? My address is in the triangle, and still nothing...

I'll wait through Monday and then may call the admissions office...everything must be rejection at this point, but i need to know for sure!

haha oops didn't see howabout post right before me... 🙂

why would they wait till the very end to reject us? you would think they would have done it earlier, is it possible that some acceptances are still going out???

i would love to say that yes, it is possible....but, i just dont think thats the case....
im in the same boat...no email, no letter....😕

does anyone know when unc's additional fin aid stuff has to be submitted (other than fafsa)? I lost the sheet we got at the interview.

I live in Raleigh, my parents live in Fayetteville. Don't know when it was sent, but I imagine Thursday or Friday.

I'm not aware of anything else. I think the FAFSA is all you fill out.

I have it from a reliable source that the Waitlist is 35 people long, and that they expect the waitlist to move somewhere between 10 and 20 names into the list. I was also waitlisted. Counting up the names who have been waitlisted here-
avidrunner23, GmCkMD, immunoguy1, Zach4000, ilcielo, travelingdoc, lajumelleali, birdsbeak, slsfinestmd, and me- well thats 10. Additionally, I know of 4 other people waitlisted, though I'm not sure if they post here or not.
Anyway- I always like statistics, so your odds are roughly between 30 and 60% if you've been waitlisted.

Additionally, I believe we will hit the low end of the spectrum for two reasons.
With the economy making the news on almost a daily basis- and people tending to be more fiscally conservative- I believe that a small percentage of people will make the decision to go for the more conservative choice financialy in schools. I.e. they will chose to go to their second choice- in-state school rather than to assume a massive amount of debt out-of-state.

Also, when UNC won the national championship in 2005- it saw admissions *acceptances* spike by about 10%. That means that this years Sr. class is larger than average. This works bc in undergrad- they send out a larger number of acceptances out than they expect to accept, since they know that historically some percent of those will accept. If we win tonight, and I'm confident we will- then some of that may influence decisions.

Both are minor influences- but if you sway a population of 160 1 or 2%, then thats 3 seats right there off the waitlist.

Anyway,
Glad I'm Waitlisted, but now I've got more waiting!

I don't think the economy will influence choices any more than they have in the past. Here is what I think, people who got into UNC as their safety school (as in the super students accepted to Harvard and other Ivy's) will wait to see their Financial Aid package. After financial aid the difference between attending UNC and attending a Prestige school may not be much of a financial mountain to overcome. Those people will choose the prestige school and vacate UNC, moving one lucky soul off the waitlist. Also, not everyone will accept a spot that gets off the waitlist. Some people may not even want to be on the waitlist. There are a number of factors, none of which anyone can really predict. I am just going to start planning to apply again . . . sucks, but it will keep me honest.

35 people seems kinda low...

I'm with you.

Waiting..but if I get off the waitlist at my top choice school, I'll probably withdraw from UNC.

re: waiting list length -- 35, eh? 🙂 how reliable is that source? (for me to believe it and get my hopes up for such a short list, it would have to be an adcom member THIS year, otherwise I take everything with a grain of salt...even coming from non-adcom interviewers).

re: 10% spike -- see, here's the thing about this senior class - I think it's 156 people. (I was reading something about match day and I believe it was for unc) I'm quite fond of math and stats too, but not really sure if they can even accommodate for 176 (160 + 16) MS1s. So that spike you speak of doesn't really look like a spike to me, even with a bunch, 25% or so, doing MPHs/research and potentially graduating next year, I don't 12/16 extra grads this year, deducting the few dropouts along the way.

re: when we win it all -- indeed, I can see that influencing the decision of someone that perhaps went to a smaller school with sub-par athletics. (e.g. Duke)

The quality of the med school is quite important but a national championship in my mind could sway a couple undecided seats. We would be silly to think that is the sole reason someone would choose UNC, but waitlisted or accepted, you know that UNC is a great school. Going to a school where you feel the sense of a community (which the championship does add to, having been in the middle of my undergrad in '05 there) is important, too.

what I do wonder about is that when people decide to choose another school, the people they take off the waitlist, do they try to match people with similar statistics? It's probably meaningless to ponder such things but rubbish like this is constantly flowing through my mind as it is through the others on the WL, I would imagine...

let the waiting/pondering/praying/Duke-bashing continue 🙂

btw - I saw a Hansbourgh jersey in Hong Kong a couple weeks ago in the window at the Nike store. There's tar heel pride even out in the far east, HEEL YEAH 🙂

Did anyone who was waitlisted and submitted the form receive any kind of confirmation from UNC that they had received the form?

I wish they would let us know our rank on the list . . . that would let you know how lucky / unlucky you are. How awesome would it be if you were number 1 on the list? On the other hand, how terrible would it be to find out you are last on the list.

Re: Grrr...the 10% spike I refer to is undergrads. I thought I mentioned that. If not then I am now. Those of you who went to UNC will remember that they stuck freshmen in Rams Village and Granville when they ran out of space in the years 05-06. The effect was significant there. I am suggesting that that trend will possibly spill over to Med school too. I am not saying that this is a concious decision in the line of "Oh UNC won, I'm going to go there now bc they have a sick basketball team" No, far from it. What winning does though is it increases the inherent prestige of a school. The effect is real, C.I.P. the year I already mentioned. Just thoughts.

Re: The source is pretty reliable, and someone intimately involved in the admissions processs. The person is also someone's mom that I know. I won't say more than that.

Honestly, I don't think that whether or not UNC wins the NCAA tournament is going to affect medical school applicant decisions; undergrad of course, med school probably not. There are too many other important factors and most med students know they aren't going to have time to tent for games anymore....oops I forgot that UNC isn't exciting enough for people to camp out for 6 weeks to go to games..... but then again, I was at Duke when UNC was so bad people didn't camp out for the game, so I may be a little biased

You guys really don't think its possible 1 person won't get pumped up by the game and it might help influence their decision? I hope its your seat they take- doubting thomasii

In past years (when I was on the wait list) I heard that they do try to match demographics from the waitlist (a boy drops out replaced with a boy, etc.). The number 35 also seems awfully low. Out of the 160 offers given out there have been maybe 20 people on this board--- so why would 1/3 of the waitlist be on here... just a thought.

Obviously don't loose hope, plenty of people do get off the waitlist, but it is a good idea to start thinking of alternatives.

You are big time biased and misled! 😀

UNC is the best basketball program in the nation. Duke is in a state of decline and it will take them years to recover. Coach K is a great coach, no doubt about that, but even he can't do much with players like Greg Paulus, who is absolute trash.

Go HEELS!

Are you on the waitlist Gborogirl? Also, did you hear of anyone getting off the waitlist when you were on it? How did reapplying work?

If I remember correctly, earlier this season Coach K was basically begging folks to come to games and telling them if they couldn't make it to please return the tickets and he would get them to someone else! 🙂
