I am currently an M1 at CMS and thought I would share a few things with the applicants habitually checking this thread. First off, congratulations if you have been accepted! If you have an interview scheduled, or are hoping for one, good luck!
As some of you may know, CMS recently hired a new dean, Dr. Robertson from Northwestern University. On Monday, Dr. Robertson spoke with our M1 class, and he seems to be a great guy who is dedicated to our success. We basically had an open forum where students could voice concerns and Dr. Robertson wrote them down to look into them. One of the interesting points of discussion was the potential of changing to a pass/fail curriculum, to which Dr. Robertson said that he has seen no evidence that P/F has any downfalls. He also sent out an email today citing studies in support of a P/F curriculum, so that *may* be in the early exploratory phase. Other things he mentioned were strengthening our ties to the hospitals we rotate through, as well as seeking out new partnerships with a couple of recently-built hospitals. He has been here only a few weeks but is already tackling some of the students' biggest concerns.
As for living arrangements, most students live in on-campus housing or in the nearby Woodlands complex. If you are looking for something cheaper, I believe there is a housing guide on the school's website (if you don't like the website, that will also be getting an overhaul fairly soon!). I live at the Preserve at Osprey Lake in Gurnee, and I found it to be very, very nice for the price, and I suggest anyone looking for off-campus housing check it out. It's about an 8-mile (read: 12-15 minute) drive to campus.
If you're planning on living downtown, students usually stick to the Ravenswood area, near the train stop for the Union Pacific North Line, which you can bring up and hop on a school shuttle to campus.
If you have any questions, I may be able to provide some insight, so feel free to PM me. I can't promise a quick response, but I will try!
