For those of you that are getting acceptances when did you guys interview? I interviewed in the middle of January so I was wondering how long it would take before acceptances come out.

I think they said 4-6 weeks at the interview. I would assume you would probably hear back some time between now and the end of the month.

Rejected pre-interview via email today at 10:22 AM central.

For those of you that are getting acceptances when did you guys interview? I interviewed in the middle of January so I was wondering how long it would take before acceptances come out.

I interviewed around the 20th of December at SLU and still have not heard back from them. From what I understand, when you interview is not a good indicator of when you will hear back from them, as several people that interviewed after me have already received their decisions.

On a related note, since it has now been greater than 8 weeks since I interviewed there, and they informed me I should hear from them within 4-6 weeks, would it be inappropriate to call them and see what the situation is? I am so anxious to hear from them and I don't know how much longer I can wait. 🙂

Does anyone know how receptive the admissions office is to people calling? Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks!! 🙂

Well if its been 8 weeks I feel like you should be allowed to call back to hear from them. I feel that SLU is very receptive to students and are very helpful via phone.

👍 Not a problem man. I'm sure your awesome and they just overlooked something. For some reason I have not received a rejection yet. I sent a letter yesterday and they said my file has be updated for consideration. 😕 I'm in serious limbo here...when will the pain end.

Congrats to all you accepted students. I'm a 4th year at SLU getting ready to leave for residency and I'm looking for someone to sublet/take over my lease. I live in a newly rehabbed brick 4 family 1 bedroom apartment 2.5 blocks from SLUSOM. Its a 5 minute walk from front door to lecture hall, less than 10 to the hospital. The apartment will be available June 1st. You can respond here or send me a private message for more info. Good luck to you all, and welcome future billikins.

edit: I would, of course, be happy to answer any questions you may have as well

Interviewing on Monday!!!

Kind of nervous...

Has anyone interviewed with Fred Rottnek? I'd love to know his style of questioning.

I interviewed back in December 20 and it took until last week for me to hear anything back. So I think it was like 8 weeks but it felt muchhh longer than that. So yeah, they took their sweet time but hold on in there... Ive become a believer that as far as med school go, no news is good news...

Hey guys, I canceled my interview today. I already have an acceptance and I couldn't really see myself at SLU over where I'm already in. Hopefully one of you guys can squeeze into my spot!

Just got done with the interview. It was by far the best interview day I've had, and I have never felt as good after an interview as I do this one. Props to SLU for keeping my interests piqued.

Nervous about mine tomorrow!! Thanks so much for posting good things, because I get less nervous every time someone says it went swimmingly. Here's hoping we see each other as SLUSOM classmates in the near future!🙂

A friend of mine from St. Louis got into SLU earlier in the cycle back in fall. He had nothing but raving reviews. he said the faculty and staff and students seemed really nice and it was like a community there not cut throat.

i agree with this. just today i got three different emails from my classmates...two were study guides for upcoming exams and one was a list of scanned questions for practice.

we take care of each other here.

Is it fair to assume that the wait time post-interview can vary from 1 week to 8+ weeks?

Thats what it seems like. They say 4-6 weeks, but according to this post I noticed some people who have not heard, even after the 6 week "deadline". As for myself its been exactly 4 weeks and some odd days and I have yet to heard back from them, but we shall see...

Also, does anyone know if acceptances/waitlists/rejections come in the (postal) mail or through email?

When I interviewed in early November, they explicitly said 3 weeks. And it was 3 weeks and a day until I was notified by email of an acceptance.

But from what a lot of people have been saying, sounds like a lot of variation in wait time.

I got an acceptance email last week and today I received a physical acceptance letter via snail mail. I thought that was pretty nice. Also, some people have gotten phone calls too. Seems like SLU utilizes many ways to give students updates...BTW, I interviewed in December and it was about 2 months before I heard anything...

I received an acceptance email yesterday!! I interviewed around December 20th (I can't remember the exact date).

Good luck to all 🙂

Is there anybody out there who thought their interview was awful/shaky/didn't go as planned and then got an acceptance?? 😕

I'm not feeling very confident after my interview and kind of wanted to get a feel for what my chances are. I got the feeling my interviewer was putting a little pressure on me to see how I'd fare, because all reports said he was supposed to be a really great/relaxed guy (and he was very charismatic and I liked him and all, just... there were some things thrown in that I didn't see coming and no questions about why I wanted to be a doctor or go to SLU. :scared:)

Never the less, I met some aaaaaamazing and really top notch people at the interview and thoroughly enjoyed myself! 😍 I definitely have even more respect for the school now that I've been there and met some of the people.

got placed on the alternate list.

does anyone know the movement for that?

got placed on the alternate list.

does anyone know the movement for that?

From what I understand, it seems like the waitlist moves quite a bit. I am basing this off of acceptance/matriculant data from a few years ago, but I imagine it has been a fairly similar situation for the last year or two.

Maybe someone else could weigh in on this topic. Best of luck to you!!🙂

My roommate was placed on the alternate list back in December and he was accepted in early February. I'd say that the alternate list moves a lot at SLU so it's a good sign. I heard that last year, close to half of the matriculating class was accepted off the waiting list. This is something I heard so I don't know how much truth there is to it.

Does anyone know of any safe and affordable housing complexes near campus?

I don't know of any specific complexes near the school, but if you go to the website above and under Getting to Know St. Louis, there's information about the different neighborhoods and info about some apartments where students live. Talking to some current students, it seems like a lot of people live in Central West End

Has anyone interviewed with Dr. Perman?

Also does anyone know the average Step 1 score for St Louis? There 2010 match list was super impressive. 😎

Thanks for the compliment, I was part of the 2010 graduating class and by my screen name I am sure that you can guess what field I am going into (actually, some pre-meds may not know...Radiation Oncology).

I thought I would drop by the pre-med forum and say a few words about Saint Louis University b/c I had such a great experience and would certainly attend SLU again. Additionally, keep in mind that I have nothing to gain by trying to influence any of you to go to SLU b/c I matched into Radiation Oncology at another program.

I would have to say that one of the best aspects about going to medical school at Saint Louis University is the atmosphere and camaraderie amongst classmates. The competition is minimal (especially now that there is only Pass/Fail in the first two years) and everybody gets along really well. I have heard horror stories from friends at other medical schools about people trying to make each other look bad on rounds (3rd/4th year), not helping each other out, etc.

Generally, our average Step 1 score is ~230, which is pretty impressive overall. I would attribute that to a relatively streamlined curriculum in the first two years and the fact that we get a full 6-7 weeks off to study for Step 1. If you have an inkling that you want to do something competitive, keep this in mind (the time off to study for Step 1) b/c your Step 1 score is the screening tool to even getting an interview in the competitive fields. For example, fields like Derm, Plastics, RadOnc, etc. won't even look at your application if your Step 1 is not > 230...straight to the proverbial wastebasket.

Additionally, our faculty in both the pre-clinical and clinical years are very good educators and create an environment conducive to learning (again...anything but "malignant"). I think our clinical years are a good balance between learning how to be functional and contribute to the medical team without making you work too much. What does that mean? Well, it's certainly good to learn how to do a thorough History and Physical and develop your Assessment and Plan, but it is of no educational benefit to stay around for countless hours and do scut work. I try to get my medical students (I am an intern now) out as soon as their work is done so that they can go home and study. You can only learn so much on the floors, so you certainly need to make time to study for your shelf exams. Finally, during my time here at SLU (I stayed here for my intern year), I have never heard an attending belittle or embarrass a resident or medical student either intentionally or unintentionally. I believe that because it is a Jesuit institution that faculty are held to a higher standard in terms of how they treat residents and medical students.

Well, I have to close for now otherwise I am going to be late for work. Unfortunately, I am working ~80 hours/week in the ICU right now (our only real tough rotation of the year as interns) so will not have the time to answer any PM's. Nonetheless, I certainly enjoyed my time at Saint Louis University and would highly recommend it for all of the aforementioned reasons. Best of luck. 🙂

Thanks for the post Cyberknife! It is certainly great to hear such good things being said about SLU. I got that feeling on my interview day there, and the students I spoke with that day reflected everything you just said. I'm looking forward to hearing a decision from SLU in the next couple of weeks! (interviewed 1/31)

Wow. Invite, 3/1...Then again, I would prefer to interview for a waitlist spot then nothing at all!

Here we go....🙂

Oncolooman, what dates are still available? and do you mind sharing your stats?

Does anyone know how often you have tests, especially in first year? Is it one after every block with quizzes in between? Are they also made to look like the boards? Thanks!

Just got wait list email yesterday...interviewed Jan 25.

I interviewed 1/31 as well, and have yet to hear back either, so don't worry! Sorry to hear you got waitlisted Valence, hopefully you'll get pulled off. Valence interviewed 6 days before us, and he just found out yesterday, so perhaps we'll find out this week medicineman2015 :xf:

For most blocks, we have 2-3 tests. We rarely have quizzes (so far, we've only had them for cell bio). They are all intended to look like board questions.

For anatomy, we had 3 tests (one every 3 weeks that was 5 hours long; 3 parts: a written, a cross-section, and a practical) along with a embryo test thrown in the middle.
For cell bio, we had two quizzes (on weeks 2 and 6 of the class) and then 2 metabolism and cell bio tests (on weeks 4 and 8).
Epistats and Ethics both just had one test since they run concurrently with the other more difficult classes.
For genetics and micro, we have three tests (one every 3 weeks).
For path and pharm, it looks like we'll have two tests (one every 5 weeks).

Hope that helps!

Aside from anatomy's 5 hour tests, how long are the others?

weird! i interviewed the day before you (the 24th) and I still haven't heard back. I wonder what the deal is

As I stated earlier on this thread, the date that you hear back depends on when your interviewer submits his/her interview report on you. So it could be a couple of weeks or it could be 8 weeks. Average is about 4-6 weeks.

Expect about 1 test every 3-4 weeks throughout first and second year. (Occasionally there will be a test after 2 weeks or after 5 weeks.) During the first year, you take 2 classes at once so the exams happen on the same day at the same time. However, second year, you only take 1 class at a time so the exam is only on that particular class. Only 3 classes have quizzes: cell bio (first year; 2 quizzes), renal (second year; 3 quizzes) and skin, bone and joints (second year; 2 quizzes). Exams and quizzes are in board-style format, which means most questions have a vignette, but some are strictly fact-based questions. Most exams also have some pictures included, e.g. gross or microscopic pictures. Those account for about 20% of the questions. Exams last about 3 hours on average. (Only anatomy and neuro have longer exams due to the practical portion.) But it just depends on how many questions there are. We've had 60 questions and we've had 140 questions. We usually get about 80-90 seconds per question (just like boards), although that's up to the course director for each module. Also, tests/quizzes are typically on Friday mornings, so plan on testing from 9 am - noon and then having the weekend free.

Hey thanks a lot!

I read somewhere that the area close to the school is not very safe to live, but how close is "close"? I was looking at some complexes like The Creamery Lofts on Park Ave that look very nice. Also if anyone can comment on areas to stay away from, that would be great!

when i visited I met with a friend who lived there. She said to refrain from traveling to the east side of the river. I guess thats the part that gives st louis its high crime rate. The school has done a lot to beef up security around the surrounding areas, so she said its no different than any other major city in the US

I've lived around St. Louis my whole life and really enjoy it (except the weather. 🙄) The most dangerous areas are usually considered East St. Louis (actually in IL across the Mississippi), North City / North County, and downtown. Most of the neighborhoods listed on SLU's Housing Page (http://medschool.slu.edu/housing/index.php?page=getting-to-know-st-louis) are good choices. I'm a big fan of Central West End for its proximity to Forest Park, but it can be on the pricey side. There's a lot of affordable, unique housing in South City / County, but like most of St. Louis there are often nice neighborhoods next to less desirable neighborhoods. If you're looking for safety and don't mind the drive, you can head to the suburbs. I live in O'Fallon right now (~30-40 min from SLU) and it was quoted as the 2nd safest city in the nation (by the numbers.) There are plenty of options in between here and there that can be considered both safe and affordable with a shorter drive.

I highly suggest forming a list and then making a trip if you're able to scope out these areas. PM me if you have any questions about the area, and I'll be happy to give us much info as I can.

Yeah that is really interesting..then again, it depends on how long your interviewer takes to present to the committee. I guess some of them take longer than others. My interviewer was Dr. Walsh and I know he has the reputation of taking a long time to thoroughly review candidates before he presents to the committee.

Does anyone have any idea if the alternate list moves systematically (ie Are there specific dates or so forth where they pull people off the alternate list or does it just happen completely random?)

Is this school still giving out interview invitations, or is it pretty much well done at this pt.?

Got the email today, I was put on the waitlist 🙁

Interviewed 1/31/11
Notified 3/7/11
Response time of 5 weeks
MCAT: 31O
GPA: 3.87

Hoping the waitlist gets moving very soon then! I'd go to SLU in a heartbeat if they pull me off the list. :xf:

Yeah, you can see my lengthy post on the previous page of this thread, but I would encourage you to do so as well. Suffice it to say, I had a phenomenal time and would certainly attend Saint Louis University again.

Best of luck to all of you and try to steer clear of those negative people on SDN that say, "Woe is me, I never should have become a physician." I love being a physician and consider it an honor to be entrusted with the welfare of other human lives.

To those who are currently on campus:
Can you say whether the closing of the Grand Avenue bridge will have any effect on the medical school? Such as, are any med school classes held on the north campus? Are there services and facilities you use on the north end that will be too difficult to access now?

Thanks for any insight.

No classes on North Campus. There is another bridge a couple blocks east and another road a couple blocks west. It will be annoying, but not a big problem.
