I read somewhere that the area close to the school is not very safe to live, but how close is "close"? I was looking at some complexes like The Creamery Lofts on Park Ave that look very nice. Also if anyone can comment on areas to stay away from, that would be great!

Students are pretty split in terms of housing. I would say the majority of my classmates are in Central West End (though the rent is really high and most of my friends there complain about thin walls/bugs/noisy neighbors/etc.). It's about a 15 min. drive and within walking distance of restaurants and nightlife (the ones who live there typically get talked into having people over post-exam to walk to post-test festivities).

Front Door Properties (including the Creamery, Theresa Lofts, etc.) often get students since they are close to school, but the rent is fairly steep there also. Typically, the guys want to live closer to campus because the proximity is worth the safety risk to them (many of them walk home late at night and such... not the best idea in the world). Girls tend to stay away from the area around the school.

If you're set on living pretty close, best bet is probably Tower Grove area (mix of good and bad neighborhoods) or by the undergrad campus (though it's a longer drive with the bridge on Grand closing soon) rather than the streets right by campus. The Hill is a little further out but is fairly popular with students.

I live in a house out on the border of Crestwood and Webster Groves. It's about a 15-20 min. drive to campus, but I think it's worth it in terms of safety (it's a nice suburb and I've heard nothing of any crime occurring anywhere remotely nearby) and space (nice two story, 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath for 3 people with very low rent). I know people tend toward apartments but renting a house is definitely worth investigating.

Does anyone know if acceptances are give by snail mail or email? I've heard waitlist notices are given by email... wasn't sure if it's the same with acceptances. I've been waiting anxiously for a decision, I interviewed January 31.

Both. I received an email followed by a package in the mail later on.

The last interviews are today and tomorrow

"For those of you who have completed the Supplemental Application, your application is being reviewed by the Committee. Notification may not occur for several months as our interview season lasts from September through April."

That is on SLU's site...so I guess they aren't really interviewing into April?

I have the same question as matterotime: is this true regarding the previous poster's (Mizoodle's) comment that there are no more interviews being conducted?

Is the last day to accept an acceptance May 15th? If so, does this mean the waitlist will move alot after May 15th?

Anyone recieve any more info in the mail after the original acceptance letter? Has anyone made a facebook group yet for next years entering class?

I haven't received anything...I called the admissions office a couple months ago and the lady said they will start sending stuff during the summer.

I wish we could find out alternate list position (or even which segment of it we're in), I'd love to know if I have a shot here.

From last year's thread, it seems most movement doesn't happen until mid-June. Hopefully they should finalize the alternate list before then. Anyone know if they will notify us or are receptive to phone calls at some point to find out approximate spot on the waitlist?

They won't tell you. The list is ranked, but they say it's confidential even after may 15.

Dang, just got waitlisted here yesterday :/ I liked SLU, I hope that there's some chance at getting pulled off of it! Good luck everyone

So if the wait list is ranked, is it unnecessary to send in update letters, etc.? Also how did you find out it is ranked (just curious)? Do you know if that ranking could ever change? Thanks for any info!

I called the admissions office. They said it was ranked but I don't know whether that can change, or whether its a hard numerical ranking, or a soft ranking where they pull people from the top X% first, so on so forth.

So I'd say filler updates probably do nothing, substantive updates might help a little. Having been told it's ranked, I don't think you'll be screwing yourself over by not sending extra stuff in.

From the alternate list decision letter:
Please keep this office informed of any changes in your status. Submit any new facts such as grades, test scores, or other changes to the Committee as soon as possible so that information may be included in your application.
So it sounds like they'll be receptive to updates.

Does anybody have any idea on how much movement the WL usually gets? I'm feeling a little lazy to look through past threads or call the admissions office, but if nobody has an answer I'll get to it and report back here.

I've only heard that it gets a lot of movement. If you find out a percentage or something similar, that would be great!

The interviews went until april last year so maybe this year since the interviews are finishing up earlier there will be some movement in the AL earlier on (I am hoping)

If anyone knows, does admissions update statuses/decisions the same day as their meetings, or does it take several days?

Has anyone who's been accepted seen any contact since the deposit?

2.5 inches of snow on March 14th. Record high (83 degrees) on March 17th.🙂

Got the decision email today. Placed on the alternate list. Interviewed 2/21.

Hey, I interviewed early November and was wait-listed. I called the admissions office and asked if there was anything I could do to enhance my application, and was informed that they do indeed rank the list, and once the committee makes a decision regardless of anything else you do they will not go back and adjust their decision. However, I did send my updated transcripts and more or less just set back and prayed. I got another email mid-January notifying me I was accepted. So in short, the waitlist does indeed move, but just be patient and stay optimistic.

Has anyone who's been accepted seen any contact since the deposit?

I was contacted when they received my deposit. From what I've gathered the next contact will be during the summer, although I have yet to send in my transcripts and financial aid application.

ditto, though I interviewed 2/15. =/ I actually loved the school and was pretty optimistic about my chances, so this was a bit of a downer. A sentence in the e-mail I got is keeping my hopes alive, but I'm guessing that they send this to everyone to keep them interested in SLU?...

The Committee has voted and selected you as a member of the alternate list of students applying to enter in August 2011. The Committee wishes to emphasize that you were chosen as an alternate over numerous able competitors.

Since the WL is ranked, guessing a LOI wouldn't be of much help? Oh SLU, why must you torment me so 🙁

Got the (pre-interview) rejection email today! Complete early July.

When I interviewed at SLU I stayed with a student who lived in the Creamery Lofts and they were quite nice, I would seriously consider living there if I was going to SLU. The surrounding area didn't seem too bad and it was very close to campus, but if your coming from a quiet suburb it'll be an adjustment. In general, any school that's in an urban environment will be in neighborhoods that some might consider unsafe, but having common sense (lock your cars, don't walk alone at night waving an iPhone around, etc.) makes a big difference.

What does people who interviewed on 2/21 being placed on the alternate list mean to me? I was interviewed on 2/14, but have not heard anything from them.

from what i've heard, it depends on your interviewer and when they present to the adcom? they also told us to expect to hear back within 4-6 weeks, so since you interviewed 2/14, you might get an update in the next week or two.

Interviewed 2/22 and alternate listed today. Ughhhhhhhh definitely a little heartbroken, but here's hoping I've got a decent list rank. Pull me SLUSOMMMMMM!

I was accepted in late November, and am withdrawing my application, as I've been accepted at my state school. I hope that will help someone here!

Good luck!

My guess is it's a good sign, they are still deciding whether to give an acceptance or not. It's either that, or the person who presents you before the committee is out of town and hasn't presented you yet

I like how you think. I interviewed on 2/7 and haven't heard anything, so I'm telling myself that they've been waiting for a withdrawal so they can accept me outright. Oh, the things we tell ourselves to stay sane during this process. :xf:

Thank you and congratulations! Does anyone have a NUMBER or percentage for what fraction of the average SLUSOM class was accepted from the Alternate/Wait list?? Anything like that? I and many others I'm sure would love to get our hands on something concrete about what the waitlisters' chances are. Interviewed 2/22, WL email 3/23.

I cannot find it anywhere on the internet and believe me, I've been looking pretty hard. :xf:

WL email on 3/33?? 😱

I tried to find this out too, but wasn't very successful. I did go through last year's thread and I'm sorry to report that it wasn't very positive. If I had to guess I would say MAYBE 20% get off. Of the people who posted that they got alternate list emails (about 30) only 3 or 4 ended up getting in.

In total about 15 people said that they got accepted off the WL on SDN last year, but many of those only posted in the thread for the first time after their acceptance. I'm sure for every one of those, there are plenty other non-posting lurkers who were alternate listed and never got in.

Anyway, sorry to be such a downer, but I don't think the WL moves as much as people seem to think it does. Best of luck to you (and me, and everyone else on the WL)! :xf:

Since you combed through last year's thread to check for us 🙂thumbup:, btw), could you tell if a similar pattern to this year happened? It seems like no one on the thread who interviewed and reported since January has been either accepted or rejected.

I realize many wouldn't post about a rejection, but it still surprises me.

I don't recall seeing a single post-interview rejection on this thread.

I interviewed on 3/1 and was put on the alternate list today 3/24, kind of a bummer.

I think a few people do in fact get rejected post-interview. At least one from last year's thread.

The pattern seems pretty similar to me. A few people getting acceptances late, but almost all going into the alternate list.

Another note: Last year, it seems like the bulk of the WL movement came in the first 2 weeks of June, which seems soooo far away.

Yeah I am pretty sure that not many people get off of the alternate list, but there definitely is some shuffling of the alternate list in June.

I was on the alternate list last year and didn't get off. I also interviewed early April so it was pretty late to expect anything. This year it looks as if they ended interviews earlier but they pretty much don't do any post interview rejections so everyone is going on the alternate list who isn't getting accepted off the bat.
