Thanks for sharing that! It definitely helps keep hope alive. If you don't mind me asking, what factors led you to that decision?

It was among the most difficult decisions of my life, but what it really came down to was that I didn't see myself being happy living some of the last years of my youth in Long Island. Even though it's only 1-2 hours away from the city I don't think I'd have time to get out there more than once a month, and even then it's already lost much of its appeal to me because I've lived here for so long.

Initially Stony was my top choice of all the places I interviewed because it's a strong school and the cost was relatively low. But the whole time I was on the waitlist I found myself only half-hoping that I would get in (how do you weigh crushing debt against semi-crushing debt + probable misery?). I'd been looking forward to a fresh start at Tulane, where I planned to go if Stony didn't come through.

Then I got the call. I could barely believe it because I'd interviewed late in the season, and neither of my interviews were particularly great. Surprise quickly turned into surprisingly deep sadness about saying goodbye to Tulane.

My significant other suggested I try using my situation as leverage. With very low expectations, I called Tulane and told them what was up. Within 30 minutes they had a formal scholarship offer on the table (apparently it's that easy?). It's still the more expensive option but much less so.

Despite the obvious issues with Tulane I'm attracted by the opportunities it presents, the laid back attitude of students, and the excitement of being in a completely new environment. I figure that even if I end up hating it, that'd just be more reason for me to focus on my work. Maybe I'll be kicking myself in a few months, but I'd have more regret if I never took the chance.

I know the seat will go to some awesome person who will thrive at Stony Brook! Good luck guys.

I've heard students go out to the city biweekly, or even weekly sometimes. I'm from the city, but until you venture out into a slower-pace town and live there, you realize how different and almost desirable it is compared to city life. Every person is different though.

Even if Tulane gave you a modest scholarship, I would never wish to incur more debt unless it was for super good reason. Unless you absolutely hated Stony, I personally would have painfully withdrew from Tulane.

Regardless of what decision you made, I'm sure it's natural to just think "what if"? It seems you really loved Tulane, so good luck there!

Close or not, you're going to be spending the grand majority of your time in and around the campus. Taking a train into the city every weekend or even every other weekend is probably not going to become a normal routine throughout the year. But be that as it may, if you responded more to the vibe you felt at Tulane, and they bumped you up to a better scholarship/financial aid package, then why not go for it? It's a good school (their hospital where you'll be training has a great local reputation) and New Orleans is a kick ass town.

I guess Noz's seat didn't go to me -- still haven't received a call 🙁

Oh well, hopefully there'll be good news this week! News, anyone? any good jokes?🙂

BUMP!!!

Well, from last year's thread, there were two reported acceptances and one withdrawal after today's date.

Conclusion:
It does NOT look good.

Stony Brook is a good school though.😍

Good luck to all those still waiting.:luck::xf::luck:

This joke is better told than written, but it's one of my favorites.

GWB was sitting in his office one day when the Secretary of State walks in and says, "I regret to inform you sir, but 2 Brazilian soldiers were killed in Afghanistan today."

Mr. Bush was clearly upset, his eyes cast down as he took a deep breath before responding somberly, "I know we've had a lot of casualties lately...but 2 brazillion is a big number."

is all hope lost by now??? :scared:😕🙁 is it stupid to continue waiting and hoping??

Class starts in late August, white coat ceremony is August 21. I don't believe that all hope is lost. You still have a couple more weeks of optimism!

If you have anything worth updating the office, then definitely send them a letter or call in to talk to someone. Otherwise, if you get real desperate, just call and remind them politely this is your top choice and why you're a good match.

For those of you still waiting, what are your other options

I just talked to the director via email, and she said that those with acceptances right now do not have multiple acceptances...so lets hope those people get off the wait list at other schools so we can take their spots..

A new incredible organization: Health Students 4 Donation is being started at schools all around the nation. The lack of viable organ donors, especially in NY, is a crisis and we are trying to resolve it! We are looking for young passionate leaders to get involved at Upstate, so if you are interested please E-mail:

[email protected].yu.edu for more info.

Attached is a document explaining who we are, what were doing and why you should join!

I just got an acceptance call today =)

WILL BE ATTENDING!!!🙂

Congratulations! My suggestion is to get on the facebook group and find housing before mid August. I'd also turn in all their forms as soon as possible. You can get a headstart if you check the Stony website, but they should be sending you an informational packet. Some of these things are "due" August 1.

🙂A few people always drop out the last week before school starts. Everyone keep their chin up! DON'T STOP, Believing!

from my calculation, only 3 people (on SDN) got in off the waitlist for Stony?? Wow. I was hoping to get in and was of the opinion that there is usually decent movement.
Good luck to those still waiting with 0 acceptances. I've been there.

I just wanted to say that there's always more people accepted than it seems on SDN. I think there's a couple more that I know of who got accepted after me off the waitlist (from the Facebook forum). Also, when I went to interview, a first year giving the tour said he got into stony 2 weeks before school started.
