Hey all, I have a question and want to know what you all think. I have been accepted to New York Medical College, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Loma Linda University. If you had to choose, where would you go and why?
Depends on what you are looking to get out of med school. I can't speak for your other choices, but will say this: I ended up choosing Loma Linda because I found the environment most conducive to my success as a student. I'm most impressed with how the faculty and staff are very knowledgeable yet personable. Even though there are almost 200 of us, it's not hard at all to set up a one on one appointment outside of class. Most of them even know my name and will say hi outside of class (including some of my first year professors), despite us being a fairly large class/school! Also, LLU has average passing board scores just above the national mean, partly due to a somewhat unique class in pathophysiology that LLU has babied over the years, not to mention a pharmacology class that has been headed by a previous USMLE question writer (who also teaches that pathophysiology course).
In the end it's up to you; come out and take a visit if you can! And if this helps at all, check out the official school of medicine blog:
http://llusm.wordpress.com/ There's a couple student contributors from each year, and it may give you an idea of what LLU is like, or med school in general I guess. There's a decent archive of stuff from every person if you are interested. Either way, check it out if you want.
Hey everyone,
Just wondering if anyone knows the timeframe it takes LLU to get back to you after you have been on an interview?
Also, does anyone know how many LLU
1. Interviews?
2. Accepts?
3. Matriculates?
Thanks alot!
Acceptances have been handed out from 1 week to 3+ months after an interview. It varies, so sorry I can't tell you something more resolute! If you get a copy of a current MSAR (usually every undergrad will have one), you can find the rest of your data. My class has ~175, and they interview around 400 if that helps at all.
I don't remember if you went to LSU but they do a committee letter and I do remember I had to print out something from AMCAS (with a barcode on it) and turn it in to the person in charge of sending the letters out.
So maybe AMCAS took some time to send it since it was the holidays and they were swamped?
Depending on what order LLU received your stuff can have an influence on when you are marked as "complete." It sounds like you sent yours late in the fall? That could be a part of it, idk. Speaking from personal experience, I was a total gunner
😳. I sent mine in at the end of June so I was closer to the top of the stack I guess.
Are the non-SDA people that get accepted to this school expected to have higher stats or do they in general just because SDA students are given preference and therefore more likely to get in even with lower stats? am I correct on this?
Nope, stats are equivalent across the board. LLU does have on average slightly lower stats then other SoCal schools, but this isn't because they are trying to shove in SDA kids with lower stats; it's because LLU is really trying to admit people who interview themselves as in support of the school's mission. Also when you think about the application pool, it sort of makes sense. Because LLU is labeled an "SDA" owned institution, it doesn't pull as many applicants, as a large number of these applicants don't want to attend an institution with any religious affiliation. Speaking for myself (and no I'm really NOT trying to sound like a tool here, just giving an example), I am SDA and my stats had me "acceptable" to other places as well. I also know personally a dozen or so SDA applicants who didn't get in because their stats were too low. It's nothing personal, it's just the only way an SDA would have an advantage (besides the obvious Dr. Nyirady interviewing a couple potential candidates at their associated SDA undergrad) is because logically that group would be more inclined to be in-line with the school's mission, not to mention the most likely person to apply.
Our class is about 50-50 SDA/non-SDA, and trust me, no one from any religious group or culture was less deserving to be there.
Sorry, I rambled there for a bit, hope it was at least helpful.
