They are very good with in the area emails, I got an II 6 days after I sent them one and multiple people in the thread reported having similar luck

Thanks! Is there any particular format to follow for these kinds of email? What should I cover in the email? Just the fact that I will be in the area in December for interview at another NY school? Should I also express my interest and desire to get an interview at Cornell?

sorry, I've never written one of these letters so I don't know what people usually cover in these emails.

You don't need to express your interest in the school. I just told them I had plans to be in NYC to interview at another med school, and I told them what dates I would be there, and asked if they could possibly interview me one of those days. They got back to me less than a week later with an interview invite scheduled for one of the days I had requested 🙂

I just finished writing the impression I got at the interview day (it's on my mdapps). I'm not sure how useful it'll be but I wrote a little bit about how they described the curriculum to us.

MS1 here. I read your impressions from interview day and its all pretty accurate. I'm impressed you remembered everything they threw at you. Of course there are a lot more things that I like about school here, but I think you picked up on many of the important highlights. Just one correction--lecture is not mandatory. PBL and Journal Club (a weekly meeting where our PBL groups discuss a recent research article) are mandatory, but lecture is videotaped and posted online if attending lecture isn't your thing. Also, quizzes are once every 2-4 weeks now that we're in the flow of school. I don't use this site anymore, but I'll try to pop in this forum every once in a while to answer Q's. Good luck to all you guys

been complete since 7/17...survived the massive wave of rejections but still no word....anyone else still waiting since mid July??

i just sent an in the area email, hoping to speed up the process a little. will be in nyc for a couple of interviews.

Whoops, thanks for pointing that out, I'll go ahead and change that. And haha yeah, I'm actually pretty surprised I absorbed as much as I did, I think the fact that I liked the school a lot and was giddy excited during the tours/info session/lunch helped.

i live in NY...should i send them an in the area email stating i'm always here to expedite their decision haha jk:laugh:

Just finished my interview here! Wow. It's quite an impressive place.

I can't believe we have to wait until March...

Have there been any more interview invites recently? are invites slowing down?

how were the interviews here? one-on-one, open file and relaxed?

Two 1-on-1 open file interviews. Very conversational with few abstract questions. I had one student and one faculty. Both started with tell me about yourself or how did you get here type questions and then asked questions about different parts of my file. They also asked questions like what will you contribute to Cornell and tell me about the toughest time in your life. Good luck, I really enjoyed this school👍

Yup. Send the office of admissions an email. Be sure to give them plenty of time. Good luck!

I sent a request a few weeks ago and my interview is next week. How long did it take them to get back to you? I really dont want to get a hotel in that area on such short notice.

I would call Ms Guerrier then. They might forward your hosting request to a Ms Cabrera who was the one that actually found me a host. I screwed the pooch and only gave them a weeks notice so they had to scramble. Thats why I recommend all other interviewees to give them plenty of time. I would book the best/cheapest hotel in the meantime though. You don't want to be without a host AND without a hotel. Best of luck!

Also just got an II.This is my absolute dream school, I thought I was for sure out of the running. Apparently they arent THAT flooded because the first available date is next Tuesday, 11/6. For reference, my stats are 3.9 36 OOS

NYU is way down south while Cornell is in the Upper East Side. Actually the patients from NYU Langone went to Mount Sinai which is a little north of NY Presbyterian-Cornell.

When were you complete if you dont mind?

Congrats! Just wondering, isn't Cornell flooded also like NYU?

I'm not sure. I live in Ga lol.. But the possible interview dates listed in my email were Nov 6th-14th. So either its dry now or they expect it to be all cleaned up by next week.

OMG I received a letter by snail mail from Cornell that's basically a likely letter!! I interviewed a few weeks ago. Basically it's the first year they're doing it to try to recruit highly qualified applicants (maybe increase their matriculation rate?), and it said to expect good news in the spring! They're still non-rolling so it's not an official acceptance. omg I'm speechless <3

You may have the best numbers I've ever seen.

I'm a big fan of the people with high numbers who withdraw from the schools they wouldn't go to after getting accepted.

To the topic, though: don't know why a letter now would increase their matriculation rate. Nobody who interviews at a high-level non-rolling school is going to be preparing to go to certain medical schools before March. I guess they felt they were losing applicants to Pritzker/Pitt/Michigan and the other non-rollers who move quickly?

It won't, but it's meant to make the applicants feel more connected with a school. A school's early appreciation indicates that you're a valuable asset to their institution. They hope that will act as a motivator later, but it likely will not. If a student is set on Harvard, they're dang well going to go to Harvard regardless if another school sends them a I <3 you note.

Also, Pitt is completely non-rolling now; aren't UChicago and UMich both rolling?

My mistake - I meant that they were rolling. Didn't know Pitt wasn't, only focused on the schools that move as soon as possible. But yeah, I just don't see the people with the scores to get those I <3 U mails being the kind who have any kind of brand loyalty in the med school admissions game.

Moreover, a school going "we don't give out acceptances until March because we compare all applicants to each other. But as of the end of October, 5 months before we announce things, we think you'll have good luck! wink wink" - I don't know, doesn't make me feel particularly good about how the school approaches its process.

hmm... Has anyone else received this letter?

I agree. I recently decided to withdraw a few acceptances actually, out of courtesy, so I'm only holding two now (Pritzker and Vandy) for financial reasons, but I'll probably choose Pritzker anyways since I don't think Vandy's giving merit money. I really liked Cornell though and might take it because of location/ivy league.

Are you just going for the name? Might be a poor decision. I think Chicago actually has a better reputation, but I could be wrong. I am also pretty sure they're one of the few that is generous with financial aid. I'd look into their match lists and see if you can get someone to interpret them before withdrawing. I'd also say you're a pretty good bet for a WashU acceptance and scholarship, but I don't know you personally. If so, that could really murk up your choices.

Not a bad problem to have. 😉

Edit: Sorry, this is the Cornell SST. Cornell is an amazing school, all of these top programs are. But everyone should make sure they're making an informed decision. If you'll be happiest here, or somewhere else you're accepted, follow your dreams!

Edit: I also loved my interview day!!! Cornell felt like a great fit for me too =) <3 <3

You're my hero, haha. I hope you end up at a place you love! Preferably one with deep pockets 😛

Chicago vs. NYC would be an interesting choice. What attracts you to the Ivy League/Cornell? The title alone doesn't mean much at that level of school, and most people I know from Cali intend to return someday (thus taking the wind out of the "my kids would be legacies!" sail). I mean, I think Cornell's a great program so I'm biased, but just curious about your opinions 🙂

Pritzker: new hospital opening in 2013 and Hyde Park is a little more chill, but near a great city of entertainment and stuff to do. the class size is also a bit smaller, which is a plus in my books

Cornell: tri-institutional partnership makes for many more research opportunities, upper east side is beautiful, and I love the idea of being in the heart of NYC. NYPH is, of course, much busier and hectic, but that could be fun, too

I'll see what happens in March--no guarantees now--but if I have the privilege to choose between these great schools I'll be so honored <3
I absolutely loved Cornell as well. May I ask when you interviewed Wangers?

I love NYC. NYU, Columbia, Cornell, Sinai, Einstein are all dream schools. What do I need to get into schools like these? I look at the mdapps profiles of people on the school specific threads of these schools and everyone has insane stats. My gpa not stellar at 3.7 and im not URM... feels kinda bad lol.

Keep in mind that compared to the average medical school applicant, pretty much everyone on SDN is a gunner (either gunning for top schools, or to get into schools, there isn't much of the middle range). So you're going to see ridiculous applications because this site selects for that.

That being said, don't underestimate the importance of the MCAT - schools increase its importance from year to year as it's an easy way to cut out a ton of applicants. Doing very well on the MCAT and getting your app in on day 1 will get you into one of the NYC schools.

I agree. It's funny how in the real world everyone is super impressed by my MCAT score (93rd percentile) but I don't have a MDApps profile up on here because other people's put mines to shame!

That said, I've interviewed here and other great schools. I'd say outside of the MCAT (let's face it, your GPA is probably already set), you have control over the other aspects of your app. The personal statement is important.
