Rejected by email, also complete September 20-something. Oh well, grateful to have closure instead of ongoing silence. 3.7 35 for those who care.

what does it mean if we were complete mid July and haven't heard anything? does this mean we are still in the game or most likely heading for a rejection? just wondering if anyone has any idea.

i'm an NY resident and I graduated from Cornell. Do you all think this will help my chances at Weill? My stats are a bit on the low side for this school.

I've also been complete since late August. Assuming they are going through the apps chronologically, I would think we are still in the running. I sent them an update letter two days ago, not sure if it will do any good.

I sent one a couple of weeks back hoping it would stir the pot. I've actually made contact 2-3 times in the past few months but still nothing. Maybe this is the part of the application process where they measure our patience.

At the interview the students stated that there seems to be a large portion of students from Cornell undergrad. Something like 10-11, which is about 10%, but who knows. This is just anecdotal evidence and could be due to a variety of other factors. I know for a fact though that Cornell looks at the applicants holistically and they care for more than just numbers.
 
On interview day they said they admit more Cornell students simply because they are familiar with the faculty writing the rec letters and because they know the rigors of the school. That may be a double-edged sword if you're on the lower side of their stats by a lot.

At my interview there were 3 Cornell students, which is a lot considering there were only 12 of us.
 
II 11/14/12. Complete 9/24/12. Notified via email. OOS. The best of luck to all of those still waiting to hear back from this school. The cycle is not over yet.

Congrats! Mind sharing your stats? Didn't mean to stalk, but damn you are getting interviews from everywhere even though you completed late!

Hey everyone, I'm also a second year (and I'm also part of Camp Phoenix -- whoo!) Just thought I'd take a quick study break/procrastinate from doing my work to answer questions. I also don't check SDN very often, so if anyone has any other specific questions, feel free to send a message.

I can talk about like/dislikes until the day you all get MDs...but my simple answer for applicants:
I like the size of the school. It's a small school (101-ish per year) which allows for close friendships within your class, between other classes, and especially with faculty and staff. In my opinion, it's an overall very comfortable and happy place to be. I've always been skeptical of asking the "are you happy?" question to those students that volunteer to talk to applicants, but I can truly say that I'm happy here. (Tired, and annoyed with work, but I even have to admit that I'm happy). Another advantage of size, for all you chronic over-committers such as myself, our school/network connections with researchers and community service organizations is just as big (probably bigger) as other medical schools. The world(aka, upper east side) is your oyster! There are SOO MANY opportunities, and so few medical students! We're a small college, but our neighboring hospitals/institutions most certainly are not..
Last year iPads were my default answer, but I know a bunch of other schools are giving iPads away now so we're not that special anymore.. BUT I can say that our iPads are better incorporated into our curriculum since we've had more time to play with them.

Dislike (and like) -- living so close to school. It feeds my laziness trait, but I also gained a lot of weight my first year from the sheer lack of physical activity..

Competitiveness -- There isn't any, really. We're P/F for the first 2 years, like actually P/F, no honors, no high/low pass. Pure unadulterated 65 cuttoff P/F. (3rd/4th year is LP/P/HP/H). I can't speak for the first-years, but our class has a google doc folder, and we have no shame in requesting study guides or other notes in the rare occurrence that they haven't already been shared. And to top it all off, notes get passed down from past years too. If competitiveness does exist here, I would say that people are competitive with themselves (as in we study hard to learn medicine, not just to do better than our classmates) It takes a lot to reverse years of pre-med neuroticisms, but we absolutely don't have any of the backstabbing behaviors that exist in college.

Constant quizzing -- we have ~1 hour long, multiple choice (and sometimes fill in) quizzes roughly every 2 weeks. It gets annoying, but to quote our course directors, they're for our benefit--to motivate us to not fall behind on material. The best part is that we don't have real finals. We have these exams called "Triple Jumps" which is an assessment of critical thinking. It's basically a 2 day exam about a clinical case that's impossible to prepare for.

uhh...what? I once shadowed on the GI service, nothing about the smell was significant...so I wouldn't say there's anything special about our bowels. Sorry for crushing your hopes and dreams. Cornell is still awesome though.


You all had one hell of an argument about admissions.


And for those that haven't heard from Cornell yet, my advisee told me last night that she didn't hear from Cornell until February. So hang in there! For the rest of you, good luck! Applying to med school is a total crapshoot (excuse my language). I would tell you all to relax and not overthink it, but let's be honest, you're all pre-meds.
 
Any URMs? Iam African American with 33M and 3.31 gpa. Is it likely that I get an interview?

How long is a piece of string? And what kind of URM are you? The kind whose parents are lawyers living in suburbia or the kind who hasn't met their dad and whose mom worked three jobs while her kid went to an inner city school? You have to ask yourself how extenuating your circumstances are for your low GPA.

If you want an even vaguely useful answer, you're going to have to provide more detail - and even then you'd be lucky to get something that's barely going to help you. Anything asking about admissions to specific schools is extremely subjective, especially when you're essentially asking "how will being an underrepresented minority make up for me being in roughly the <5th percentile for Cornell acceptances based on GPA?".

And yeah, you're asking a group of mostly white, affluent kids in their early 20s who have zero experience with URM recruiting 🙂.

Hahah, I guess I am riding a good/lucky wave right now, but I think I would still disagree with that statement otherwise 😉 it's perfectly true that an applicant can be "likely" to get an interview at certain schools!

In your application complete e-mail from Cornell, they give you a specific e-mail address to use when sending updates.
 
Would anybody comment on the interview day please? Are the interviews stressful? What type of questions should I expect?

This interview is pretty typical (i.e. not stressful whatsoever). Morning or afternoon interviewsm tour, lunch, discussion with a Dean... The only distinct thing I remember is that the interview coordinator Woldine was super nice and it was the only interview I have been on where they tell you exactly what time your interview is beforehand (I liked that they did not mess around with me time). I had a faculty interviewer and a student interviewer and they were both super super chill... just asking me things I've done and my outside interests, why Weill...
