Howdy!

So for those of you that stayed at the Millennium Hotel; how did you guys get the "Medical School Interview Rate" to work? I couldn't find a way to do it online and I called and the staff I talked to couldn't find it. I interview on Monday (checking in on Sunday). Any help is greatly appreciated 🙂

Good luck to everyone who has interviewed here!! Duke seems like a wonderful school that has chosen their interviewees very carefully. I have a good friend that just had an interview and was really blown away by the program. I wish you all the best!

Are people interviewing on 11/30 trying and staying at the Millenium Hotel trying to hang out on the 29th? Or are there any activities happening that day?

Anyone else having problems logging into their secondary? I get an error and can't even reset my password.

I checked mine and its the same. No big deal they r prob just working on it. If you are trying to submit the secondary you could always try emailing them and asking them what's up. I'm sure it'll be back in a few though.

Does Duke provide any stats regarding how many of those accepted took biochemistry. I know that it's a required prereq, but I assume there are exceptions. Any idea what an "exception" would look like?

For example, I did very well in organic chemistry, but never took biochem. GPA is 3.9+, both science and overall. I was a Neuroscience major, and have a strong research background, including 2 years as an undergraduate, 1 year in a research-centric master's (BA/MA) program, and 2 years as a research coordinator post-college. I'd like to think that this experience would prepare me to do some great work during the 3rd year. But is it all for naught if I haven't taken biochem? :scared:

Whew I was a bit worried there... Not being able to log in was ruining my obsessive once or twice a day check of my status

only submitted 11/25. duke is such a reach for me, but its definitely my top choice. i wonder how much they consider "reach" candidates given their secondary? duke adcom knows more about me now then even some of my family! haha.

Got an interview invite today!!! 🙂

Completed on 7/8 for PCLT. OOS 3.6/3.5/38

I was starting to think they forgot about me!

Congratulations! Did you get a separate invitation for PCLT, or were they together?

Are you allowed to bring anything into the MMI stations? Was there any paper to jot down notes while you're reading the questions, or do you just have to organize thoughts in your head?

I don't remember there being paper. I didn't feel like I ever needed to write anything down either though. The amount of time they give you is plenty.

No paper. Everything is put away before it begins.

Hey guy,

I found this article and it is a pretty good read. It may help clear up some question you all may have on the admissions process (plus it highlights everything that makes duke so amazing 🙂 ) It starts on page 6 and goes on until page 9 I think.

Enjoy!

PS: its from 2010, so i dont know how things may have changed with the MMI being instituted.

Thanks for the link, man. Going crazy that decisions are still ~4 months away!

Interview invite today for MD and MD/PhD! Complete Oct. 23rd. 4.0, 37. Has anyone else had problems accessing the link in the email that they provide for picking a date? The one they sent me is broken.

Just got my II yesterday, completed 10/19.

As for the link, you could try just accessing your page for completing the secondary. The link should be there as well.

When you say completed, are you simply referring to the date that you submitted your secondary, or are you talking about when the Screening Process was completed?

The day I got my confirmation that my file was complete.

Hi! If you don't mind - what was your mcat/gpa? My app was completed 10/20 and I'm still waiting to hear back. Thanks!

While I'm sure generally it's in order, IIs can be pretty scattered, so don't tense up too much 😛

Congrats to the interviewees! Did you guys just take a taxi or rent a car? The public transit from the airport to Duke seems complicated...

Definitely take a cab. It's about $25-30

+1 and it's an easy drive there and back. Not a big hassle you may be able to find someone to split with you too. Kind of depends what time\day your coming in.

does duke send "complete" emails, or does the date we submit the secondary count as being complete? thanks.

Anyone else who applied 10/20 onwards here back with an II yet? Duke doesn't notify you if you get a pre-interview rejection, right? They just never reply? Thanks!

They inform you of preinterview rejection via the status page. Based on past years I would imagine they will be deciding on the last people to interview in the next week or so.

A couple posters said that they periodically checked their status, and were informed of a rejection (pre-interview) via their status on the secondary web page. I think it will say something along the lines of " Application Complete" and then a brief explanation that you were not offered an interview.

Hope this helped and best of luck!

I'm amused that only 50% of applicants actually finish their secondary. Hell, I barely completed it myself! I wonder if their yield (the % of accepted applicants who choose to matriculate) is greater than other schools. I would also be interested to see the averages for GPA and MCAT for the two groups (submitted w/o secondary and submitted w/ secondary) to see whether or not Duke actually loses a chance at recruiting many high quality students.

Though I am sure Duke believes its reasons are sound, I doubt they fully understand how their secondary pushes away students who must prioritize their time between the dozen or more applications they must fill out in an already packed schedule. If I were only applying to Duke and a few other schools, I would have been happy to spend the 7+ hours writing and editing their secondary essays, but the reality of medical school admissions is that most of us must apply to a great number of schools who also require their own essays. The average applicant applies to ~14 schools. If each school required personal essays like Duke's, the secondary process would require nearly 100 hours to complete given a conservative estimate of seven hours per application. Duke's requirements may allow the admissions office a clearer look into the personal qualities of its applicants, but in the process it makes the school seem pretentious and either apathetic or disconnected from the stresses of its students.

Well, it does weed out people that aren't very interested in Duke. I know that I'll be rejected, but I completed the secondary anyways because Duke is awesome.

Theoretically. That's why I'd be interested to compare its matriculation/acceptance yield with peer institutions. Judging from what I've read and heard, usually people do not know how well they truly fit at a school until they visit it during their interview.

When you interview duke does a pretty good job of explaining the reason they feel their secondary needs to be so involved. It makes me feel good to know how much value they place on really getting to know an applicant before they interview them or offer then a spot in the class. Personally, I'm glad they offered me the chance to be "unique" through their essays and show then why I think I'd be a good fit at the school. I think my essays are the reason I got an interview since my Mcat is slightly on the low side of their average. Also like Tarheel said, guess the people who don't fill it out aren't truly interested in attending.

Though Duke's intent might be noble, the reality is insensitive to the time and stress of the applicants and, I would argue, likely lowers the quality of the student body they recruit. But I would need more data to back that claim up. Either way, glad to be done with the secondary.
