Interview Invite for Feb 22nd! Awesome news! Does anyone know if I'll be in one of those "interviewing for waitlist spot" situations, considering how late in the season it is?

Congrats! mind sharing your stats? Complete in october and still haven't heard...

Thanks! My stats are 39P and 3.85cgpa/sgpa. I was complete late September/early October, so hopefully you'll hear back pretty soon.

I definitely panicked and sent Director Mazza an email asking if I f-ed up. She said she will be sending email confirmations to our online intent in the next few days.

Oh good hahaha so we shall know soon!!

A couple questions for current students-

1) has anyone been able to do research and/or public health work abroad through the Bloomberg school of public health/Center for Global Health? Is there funding/support available for this kind of thing?

2) Is there any flexibility to arrange electives/clerkships in the 3rd and 4th years to allow for devoted research time, or is it necessary to take a year off to get a large chunk of time for research?

Thanks!

Many students do research in public health and global health... in fact, Bloomberg is a major reason (among many others) that people decide to come to Hopkins! (Also, if you're interested in MPH, you should know that medical students pretty much get guaranteed acceptance to Bloomberg and there is funding that covers the tuition that almost everyone gets)

You may have already looked into our curriculum and read about the scholarly concentration requirement. Other than research in the basic sciences and clinical research there are also the domains of public health, community service, history of medicine and the medical humanities. These different areas of research are fluid, and you can do research with anyone. The Dean's office gives each student $5,000 as a stipend for the summer and up to $750 to cover transportation, I believe. There are also plenty of funding sources and scholarships you can apply to (and for many, all you have to do is apply) if you need more funding.

I'm a first year and I know of 5 others who are doing projects abroad this summer and I think last year there were even more. There are several students doing research in health policy and public health (not related to the scholarly concentration) who are working with Bloomberg faculty right now.

In terms of 3rd and 4th year, it is my understanding that there is a lot of flexibility. In fact, I plan on using much of my elective time to do research in a lab setting. Many studentsuse this flexibility to go abroad on service trips, conduct research, or just travel.

Summary: Yes and yes to your questions.

This is awesome. Thanks for the helpful response!

No problem! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Oh, also I'm not sure if you're coming to interview sometime next week, but coincidentally that will be our global health intersession (between each block we have an intersession, a one week break which is super low stress but full of great lectures and seminars)! We will be teleconferencing with medical students in india, malaysia, uganda and ethiopia each day and learning about global health issues.

also of note, i really don't see bloomberg and the school of medicine as separate entities at all. the faculty and resources at bloomberg are completely accessible to us and it's right across the street. when you come for your interview and for second look i would definitely pay a visit to bloomberg. it's an amazing building (go up to the 9th floor cafe to grab a snack and a panoramic great view of the city!)

Gonna leave this here so you can see how intense and serious we are at Johnny Hop..

soooo awesome! Definitely the way we do it over here

Hopkins has the Harlem Shake on lock! By far one of the best of....over 12,000 videos!

Just got an interview for March 9th! Did not even realize that JHU continued interviews this late into the year, I had assumed I was getting the silent rejection.

Congrats! I didn't realize that schools interview on Saturdays (3/9)

Just got an interview invite for the 28th yesterday! Submitted in early september but wasn't complete until November so excited! In response to the above comments according to the facebook page a post a couple of months back said they planned on interviewing through the first week of March and the email said all interviews are Thursday or Friday so that last fellow prob meant March 8th which is a Friday

Quick question, does the Hopkins alternate list still operate via a high-tier/low-tier basis?

Haha, I like how some of the students are using things that I bet were big part of their applications to here.

e.g. the figure skater, the gymnast, the juggler...

Hey guys, does anyone know about Hopkins possibly rescinding an offer of acceptance? I'm worried that I may get a C (not sure, but it MAY happen) in one of my classes this semester, and I'm worried that it may cause them to rescind my offer. I'll likely end up with a B or B-, but you never know.

Does anyone know how Hopkins feels about deferring enrollment to the following year.

I've been getting advice that if I have the opportunity to, I should tak time to travel and do some things I've always wanted to do (medically related/contributing to society and my ability to become a great physician of course).

Any thoughts?

I think they're open to considering deferral requests as long as you have a substantial reason for requesting one/a solid plan for your deferral year. Valerie Mazza told me to send the written request to her by May 1st (I think) and then it will be reviewed by the committee.

One C shouldn't make a difference (if you get multiple Cs, that would raise some concern). If its not a prereq, switch to pass/fail?

It's a pre req. I don't think I will get a C, but I'm just asking. I've already been accepted, and it would be my only C on my transcript.

Thanks!! Sounds great. I secretly feel like it "grinds their gears" when accepted students defer, but most people I've talked to say it is the best thing they decided to do.

Do you know how that might affect potential scholarships?

The admissions office also addressed their take on deferrals on their fb page. Hope this helps.

For current medical students, how big of an issue is the neighborhood around the medical campus? I was in baltimore for a summer and i thought it was fine but I mostly stayed around the inner harbor and state cultural center. i understand the basics of walking with friends, being aware, etc. Was there any special precautions you guys had to adopt such as leaving the medical campus before dark or something? Will we be getting a rundown on where not to go during Second Look?

Is anyone else feeling a little overwhelmed with the need access application? How are we supposed to estimate how much money on financial aid we will receive this year for school??

I asked the same question, and apparently, everyone feels that way. Just guess, man.

Not really-- I'm trying to figure out how deferrals work with financial aid in general. The Hopkins fin aid office and a couple other schools have told me I don't have to apply for aid this year since I won't start until the next academic year.... But it would be helpful to know fin aid packages from different schools as I'm making my decision so I might just apply this year anyways to see what I get. If you learn anything more let me know and I'll do the same.

That makes sense. I am on the fence about deferring...maybe that means I should just go straight through.

In other news...second look is coming up. I know they asked on the form if your spouse/significant other is attending.

I understand for the spouse, but I am on the fence about bringing my significant other. Is anyone else doing this?

Just a heads up for folks waiting in limbo, invites are still going out.

I did last year, as did a few other folks. No reason not to!

The medical campus is very safe and secure. There are over 300 cameras and everything is well lit. There are security officers at every street corner, regular walking patrols, and officers driving around at all times. I feel very safe heading home even late at night on the medical campus. Things start to get a little dicey as you head east, west, and north. Going south is still pretty safe. The shuttle, circulator and public transport in and out of the medical campus are also safe, clean and reliable.

Heads up for people - friend contacted them today. All decisions (maybe just for pre-interview people? I don't know) are supposed to go out in the next 2 weeks.

Just a quick question. So I have been out of school for 2 years, I know it is not a long time, but sometimes I am scared of getting thrown into it all again. Can anyone comment on starting medical school after being out of school for a couple of years?

Average age for entering Hopkins students is 24 if I remember right. I, too, will have been out of school for 2 years. Most of my friends as well. It's very common so I doubt it'll be a problem. You'll be in good company 😎

You deferred last year or brought a significant other to second look?

Oops sorry, brought a significant other to Second Look. Quite a few members of our accepted class deferred a year, so it's not uncommon. Plenty of 4th-years also take an extra year to do research/get another degree/relax, too. If it might help to get in touch with students who've deferred a year, feel free to email 1st-years on the Greeters spreadsheet. We can try to put you in touch.

Thanks! I think the year off/masters would be a good fit for me!

Question:

How do we get our financial aid packet once they are released? Email?
