Strange... Did they indicate why you need to have a meeting with the dean?

I guess they thought I requested the meeting. I sent them a letter of interest detailing my goals and specific interest in their school. I'm assuming it was shuffled along to various people; the lady who corresponded said that my information was forwarded to her and that she could schedule a meeting for me, if I was still interested. The dean of the school was going to meet with me, but he was out of town, so the dean of academic affairs volunteered. To my knowledge, I never requested a meeting and I am still trying to figure out what the meeting would be about. I may just have to attend this pre-interview interview to land an actual one. 😀

Interesting. Did you send your letter by snail mail or email? Before my interview, I sent them something similar to what you did and attached updated files via email, but they never bothered to reply back. Sometimes, I wondered whether they even check their email (the general admission email) or simply ignored my emails.

Haha this meeting might be your "in". Go for it! Good luck!

One week for me. Did you have your interview recently? I think there will be acceptance calls either this week or sometime next week. They usually send them out once a month
Thanks! yeah I interviewed last Thursday, now just anxiously hoping for a call!

Gotcha. Mine took exactly one week. I think I got pretty lucky though. I know there are people who interviewed in November and still haven't heard back yet. Hope you hear back sometime this week! Good luck 🙂

OOS Non-SDA applicant here. File complete @ the beginning of Nov. Still waiting for an interview invite. I'm going to be in Cali later this month and have contacted Loma Linda about touring the campus and speaking with an admissions counselor. Any other ideas to get my name on their radar?
3.36Sgpa, 3.27Cgpa, 30P.

Just based on the numbers you provided, your gpa seems to be below average. But I am well aware that numbers are not everything for Loma Linda. Any ideas on what you would be talking about with an admissions' counselor? If I were you, I would be prepared to explain why you got below average grades in some of your classes and try to show why you want to attend LLUSM.

Yes, it was definitely an open-file interview.

First time poster long time lurker

I'm a current Georgetown SMP student, Non-SDA (Catholic), IN and have been complete for a while at Loma Linda. Super interested in LLU- Anyone have any insight as to how the admissions committee views Post-Bac applicants?

How many weeks do students get off to study for step 1. I was thinking it was a low number, perhaps 4 weeks, but I couldn't remember for sure. Thanks!

You get exactly 5 weeks from the day you take the comprehensive basic science exam (last exam of second year) until third year orientation. You can schedule your step 1 anytime during this period. So you can decide how much time you want to study. Some people took it after a week while others took it a day before orientation.

This year we get about 4 weeks before 3rd year starts. May 10 is the last day of classes, and 3rd year begins on June 10. Sounds like it varies from year to year, but it is a shorter period of time then it sounds like some other schools have :/

Does LLU accept pre-interview LOI? And if so, which email so we send it to?

Got the complete letter on Jan 15th, though I was complete Nov/Dec.

Huh? They sent you a letter that you are complete? Strange. All the people I know just got an email from LLU when they were complete

Don't know what to tell you,, lol. The letter said my recommendations are received and app is complete, and said any decision will come by postal mail.

I had a few quick questions about Loma Linda and was hoping someone on here might have some insight.

1. What is the day to day schedule like in years 1/2? I can't seem to find a breakdown anywhere. What time do classes start and end.

2. How close can students park?

3. How much time do the mandatory religious aspects of the school take (chapel and religion courses). When is Chapel and how long is it?

4. Does Loma Linda tend to favor their own students for residency spots. I'm referring to less competitive specialties like EM, IM, etc. In other words, are most students that want to stay at Loma Linda able to?

5. Someone on this forum mentioned that they just emailed a department and were able to get research. However, my student tour guide seemed to imply that research was only available starting the summer after MS1. Which is it? If I wanted to get involved in research in a surgical sub specialty on day 1 of MS 1 could I email someone and get it set up?

Thanks so much!

Hey in response to your questions

1) Classes start at 8 am everyday and the formal lectures go until noon. Most afternoons starting at 1 pm you'll have labs such as anatomy, histology, EBM, etc. The latest these go are until 5 pm. Second year tends to have more free afternoons but still lecture 8-12.

2) First year classes are in the centennial complex so you park in lot X which is right there. Second year classes are across the street in the Alumni hall so it's an extra 2 minute walking. Caveat, they are currently doing construction in the parking lot and I have no idea when this will end so there is definitely a lack of parking spaces so I would get there early.

3) Chapels are every Wednesday from 11-12. Every quarter there is a 'week of renewal' where there is chapel every day from 11-12. Although this may seem like a lot I would just look at it like this: it is an extra hour of study/nap time AND its one less hour of lecture to study for (trust me this makes a big difference). Haha unless you enjoy going to chapels and that's cool too 🙂 as for religion classes you start them fall quarter of your first year. They are usually 1 hour twice a week. Once again these take away lecture hours but they do have assignments you have to complete.

4) Loma Linda definitely favors their own for residency. If you are a decent applicant and you rank Loma Linda first you are probably guaranteed to get in. The majority of each class stays here.

5) Most people who do research start the summer after first year. There are definitely opportunities for motivated students to start earlier. Most departments welcome students to do research. However, I wouldn't recommend starting the first day of first year. There will definitely be an adjustment period when starting medical school for even the best students. It is a completely different beast then undergrad. I would give yourself time to adjust to the sheer amount of studying you will have to do to just stay afloat.

I think I covered it all. Let me know if there are any other questions! Good luck 🙂

Thanks for the detailed answer! If you don't mind, a few more questions came to me as well.

1. Do you feel pretty well prepared for step 1? I know that students have a relatively short time off (4 weeks) to study. Are classes geared towards step 1 prep?

2. Is there a website that lists Loma Linda's COA. The only thing I can find is the admissions FAQ which lists numbers for tuition, living allowance, and books. Is there a transportation and/or personal allotment factored into the COA. Would anyone happen to know how much?

3. Finally, you wouldn't happen to have access to Loma Linda's elusive match list would you? The most recent I have found is 2008.

Thanks again. I really appreciate it.

It is really hit or miss for certain classes and step 1 prep. Some classes are definitely better than others. Pathophys, for one, is awesome and really helps for the boards. You get 4-5 weeks from the last in-house exam and 3rd year orientation. So it's really more like 2-4 weeks of studying depending on what you want. But you really should be studying for Step 1 starting spring break of your second year.

I don't know about the COA thing but you should try calling the finance office. They're usually very helpful

I do have a 2012 match list. PM me and I'll send it to you.

1. Like chargersfan said, it really is hit or miss, but I feel that for the most part, preparation has been spot on. I've been doing UWorld Qbank questions in preparation for step 1, and while I still miss questions here or there, nothing has been unfamiliar to me yet. Pathophysiology, Pathology, Neuroscience, and Microbiology are really well taught IMO, and have given me much confidence. Biochemistry leaves something to be desired, but fortunately I hear that's quite a small portion of Step I that I can review through First Aid & DIT. And I agree, you really should start preparing in earnest during Spring Break, and it's a good idea to be practicing Qbank questions along with classes throughout MS2. This year, we will have only 4 weeks between MS2 and MS3, so only about 3 weeks for prep. But Im not worried as I feel I have gotten a really good foundation, and I'll have started DIT over spring break and then finish it quickly just after MS2 ends.

2. Here is the COA for a typical 1st year student at LLU. These numbers are from the 2010-2011 school year. Brace yourself!

Tuition: $40,668.00
Enrollment Fee: $2,880.00
Books and Supplies: $3,200.00
Loan Fee: $713.00
Room and Board: $10,650.00
Personal Expenses: $1,400.00
Transportation: $3,150.00
Computer Expense: $1,973.00
Total: $64,634.00

The computer expense was an optional amount that I was given to buy a personal laptop for educational purposes. That number varies based on what you buy, and I bought a souped up MacBook Pro, so obviously mine is high haha. If you receive federal aid, then the amount you have to live off every month comes out to about $1,600, which is more than enough to pay for rent, food, and the occasional date. And if you budget yourself well, you will find that you don't even need to borrow the maximum amount you need, which will save you a lot in the long run. Also note that they only give you living expenses for months you are in school, so the summer break between MS1 & MS2 is unfunded; most students pick up jobs or research to pay for life during this time, or honestly it's more than easy to just save money for the end of the year and have leftover loans to pay for those 2 1/2 months.

3. This link shows the correlation between average LLU Student Step I scores and how they matched!https://dl.dropbox.com/u/45360377/2006-2012 Step I stats.pdf

Hope this helps!

Ahh congrats! Finally, some news =D

Was the invite via snail mail or email?

Is it a good idea to email them if we are "in the area" for a possible interview?

The Shepardson Lot located on the corner of Shepardson and Benton Streets. When I went (morning session), there weren't that many cars in that parking lot. Moreover, there is no parking fee. There is also a shuttle that brings you to the medical school; you just have to make sure that the shuttle goes there so ask the driver first. Good luck!

How does Loma Linda's grading system work. I think someone at my interview day mentioned it was a P/HP/H system and not curved. I know its not curved, but how many students tend to fall into each category (How many are able to get honors? How many fail?, etc) Thanks!

You are correct it is a H/HP/P system that is not on the curve. The way the instructors set the cut off points is typically 20% honors, 30% HP, 50% pass. There is always some leeway but it usually falls around those points.

Wow that's a really quick turn-around. That means 2 things to me:

1) They really like you and your secondaries
2) It doesn't look too good for those of us who have been waiting to hear back for months

Good luck on your interview! 👍

I really wish I had just found God on the corner of First and Amistad, and actually applied to this school

Here's what happens when LLU students try to study... And yes, these really are my classmates 😀

Do II come via snail mail or will be we notified via email?

E-mail. Then you decide your interview date by calling them.

Also... Does anyone happen to know how long the wait is post-interview for you to receive their decision? I forgot what they told us when I interviewed in late January. I loved my interview day there an am dying to know! =)
