2013-2014 Duke University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I believe the official release date is march 3
I wouldn't say March 3rd is the "official" date, but in the past, acceptances have indeed been released on the first Monday in March. I believe most non-rolling schools aim for this date (or week) as well. Of course, no non-rolling school guarantees decisions on this day, but they do aim for it. Nonetheless, I'd say most applicants can be pretty confident to hear from Duke this year on March 3rd (acceptances) and March 4th (wait list/rejections).

And it seems like they won't be calling either but listing the results online - based on the msg at the top of the login medDuke site. It's odd though since the staff highlighted at the interview that they would appreciate it if those who were accepted would call them back asap to discuss whether they'd be placing a deposit or passing. It's gonna be like checking mcat scores all over again lol! (Refreshing the page every minute on the est. release date)

So no e-mail notification?! I'm going to have palpitations all day 🙁

@gabdolce, MSTP and MD second looks are the same weekend; MSTP second look is just a couple days longer since you'll attend the annual MSTP Symposium and meet with prospective research mentors etc.

There should be email notifications! (to ease your palpitations a bit 😛)

According to the secondary website:

"We anticipate distribution of admission decisions to occur some time in early March 2014. This year, all admission decisions will be distributed electronically- via email (applicants offered admission, applicants offered a wait list position, and applicants who will not be offered admission). Decisions will be sent to the email address we have on file in your Duke Med Application Account. DECISIONS WILL NOT BE GIVEN OVER THE TELEPHONE (this policy is in place to protect your privacy)."

Ah yes! Now I will only have minor ones, thank you carlton 😛

I was thinking about sending an update letter. do you guys think it is too late at this point to send one in/ they must have made decisions already?

I actually just had a manuscript accepted and called today to see if they would accept updates, and the admissions office lady said no. Sorry 🙁 hope that helps.

I literally called last week and they told me yes. what does that mean.....? who did you talk to? maybe they changed their mind between last week and this week i guess.

For what it is worth, about two weeks after my interview I inquired about adding an update, and was told by an admissions committee member that updates wouldn't be seen by the committee at that point (implying that a review of my application and decision had been made). Perhaps the person who told you yes isn't aware of your application's particular status (length since interview, committee decision, etc.)?

I spoke to someone in the admissions office, not sure what her name was (didn't ask, oops!). I told her I interviewed in November and when I asked if they were still taking updates, she explicitly told me they weren't accepting them anymore. I have no idea what that means with regard to what other people seem to have been told, but I probably will not be sending an update for fear of a) wasting a good update that won't be read and having nothing else to say should I be wait listed, and b) irritating admissions committee members if they are reviewing my app one last time. Probably me being neurotic, but I'm going to play the "better safe than sorry" card. That said, here's hoping we're all accepted in march! This is my far-and-away top choice. :luck:

Oh just letting everyone know that this Monday will be the last interview date. Originally, the admission office said they were targeting March 3rd as the release date, but due to the 3-day school cancellation from a snowstorm last week, they are delaying their target date until the 7th (they might still release before then, but decisions may not be as early as previous years). Just letting all the neurotic SDNers (like myself) know so you won't spam refresh your E-mail/status page too early 😛. Good luck everyone!

Guess I'll have to get another refill on my anxiety meds haha. Man this wait is tough! I guess I've waited over 5 months now and another 3 or 4 days won't hurt.

did you guys end up sending updates to duke? I ended up deciding not to because it seemed too close to decisions.

I am waiting until waiting lists to send in my update. I feel like if I send it in now and still get wait-listed, then I've sort of "run out of ammo." Especially because there is a good chance they already decided on me so sending in an update now wouldn't really change that rank.

same. i interviewed months ago. I feel like at this point decisions are being made for people who have interviewed recently.

or people who just recently filled out the post-interview survey
bahahah! SO glad you guys mentioned that on here and I made sure to do it back when I interviewed.
(Also, still kinda ridiculous that they hold our applications hostage in order to get feedback)

wait really? that can't be true. lol. that would be super ridiculous if it is.

Yep you betcha it's true. Though I can understand - they recently transitioned into MMI format, and this is their 3rd year doing it (or 2nd? I forget), so they probably want as much feedback as possible. It also only takes about 30 minutes, and I personally was going to do it regardless, so I didn't mind. 😛 One of the deans also emphasized that this was mandatory to the group, so we were informed. (though it may be the case that on some days they forgot according to some previous replies, which in that case is Duke's fault and they need to be consistent about this.)

they def didn't tell us that. good to know. I didn't fill mine out till a month after my interview TT

I literally don't think I could be any more stressed out if I tried. Here's hoping we get decisions tomorrow and duke puts us out of our misery!

According to YamNMangos, Duke admissions said they are delaying to 7th.

apparently md/phd came out this past thursday.....

hmmm, i wonder if the decision date for md/phd was delayed. If not, then we might hear back tomorrow. Does anyone when md/phd decisions were released last year?

After some sleuthing on last year's thread the first post about MD/PhD acceptance was on Feb 21. Don't know what that means for us :/ fingers crossed!

Only one person on SDN reported receiving an MD/PhD acceptance last year, and according to this post, that happened on 2/18/13. If this year's MD/PhD acceptances went out on 2/27/14 (though this post says it was 2/28/14), then it does look like we're behind schedule by a little over a week. Who knows if that means anything, though, right? We'll find out when we find out.

@happyfeet1292 - SDN sleuths unite! But I took it one step further and stalked that poster's post history to find the exact date of his/her acceptance, which was the 18th.

Well it looks as though, in the absence of any early morning phone calls today, that decisions will in fact, be delayed 🙁

The application portal says that there will be no phone calls this year, all decisions will be sent out via the email on file. That being said, someone on this thread previously mentioned that the committee said that decisions would be a little delayed this year. I believe the 7th was the date being thrown around

Yeah my bad guys, I spent so much time trolling previous years that I forgot there would be no calls. I did remember yam saying it could be delayed but I was just hoping for the best.

Yeah I woke up this morning half hoping that we would hear something. But I remember them saying at my interview (I was there after the snow storm) that they were behind and that notification would come out sometime this week. So it sounded like they were not too optimistic about hitting the March 3 mark.

Duke emailed me a personalized rejection letter that described my essays as impersonal and robotic (why invite me to interview, then??) and then went on to criticize me for dropping my folder during the interview day. And finally questioned my personal hygiene and grooming.

W. T. F.

But then I woke up. No email from Duke. Ugh, subconscious, seriously, get a grip.

(Sorry if the way I phrased this comment briefly made anyone think emails were going out today... I don't want to scare anyone, but I did want you all to have the full WTF experience my dream deserves.)

Not that it matters, but I was hoping we could get more information so that we can wildly speculate about an esoteric decision making process in the hopes of making time pass and giving us the chance to self-delude in order to bring a measure of comfort and solace during a time full of stress and anxiety for an ultimately inconsequential outcome...

Anyone know how many people they interviewed this year? Was it like 2 years ago when they interviewed like 1200 or last year with only like 550? Maybe it is somewhere in between.

Any current delay will likely be longer than previously thought - Duke closes at 2 pm today because of ice and freezing rain, may go through tomorrow since temperatures only getting lower. So just roll with it!

I think when I interviewed, they mentioned the number to be around 700 interviewees for 120 spots in the incoming class.

But seriously, anyone know if they are going to release it on March 7th or it can happen anytime between now and Friday?
