2013-2014 Indiana University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For OOSers interviewing in Indianapolis and if you need a cheap ride from the airport to downtown, try looking into IndyGo.

It takes about 45 minutes to get to downtown, but it is a public transportation and it only costs me $1.75 per ride. It was so much cheaper than taxi price ($25+), so even though I had to wait a little for the bus to get to the airport, it was totally worth it. If you need to get to the downtown hotels like Hampton Inn, I would definitely looking into IndyGo.

EDIT: Does anyone know how receptive IU is regarding post-interview update/intent letters?

If I submit my application in October/November, as an OOS is that too late? I ran out of $$ for applications, credit card is maxed, so I'm waiting on a financial aid check so I can add to AMCAS and pay the secondary fee.

Stats:

OOS
26 y/o, non-URM male
3.3 c/sGPA
30 MCAT
3.85 grad GPA
2 years full time research (neuro)
1 year graduate research (stem cells)
~350 hours clinical volunteering
~50 hours non-clinical volunteering
Shadowed 4 doctors
No significant ties to Indiana

IU doesn't have a fee until after you have an interview invite so this is one school that is worth the $35 to apply to now since you won't waste money down the road.

However, I don't know if your stats are good enough since you are OOS. They have high standards for OOS.

9/4 interview finished.

Had a blast, although I realized I could have answered the ethical questions so much better, but I hope I made a good positive impression. Interview was short (30 min) instead of 45 min so hopefully it is not a big deal.

Surprisingly so many OOS people(I met only 2 IS out of 50+) interviewed in the morning.

I felt similarly about my answers to the ethical questions asked--one question in particular I know I could've answered better (although I did give an okay answer, I think)...I just hadn't expected the question to be asked that particular way & the answer I think they were looking for really wouldn't have been the solution at my undergrad (it was a question about underage intoxication & the role of an RA...and the answer really depends on how your particular college handles underage intoxication).

My interview was one of the longer ones (45 mins; I barely made it back to the atrium in time before we were herded to the info session 😳)...but that was likely because I asked my interviewers 3 detailed questions at the end + our whole conversation wasn't just me talking the whole time (both of my interviewers did their fair share of talking...it was definitely more of a conversation than a q&a session).

I know, right?!? I was not expecting that many other OOS people...

Same here. I met people from Arizona, New York (that kid had 8 IIs), Arizona, New Jersey, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, California, New Mexico, and Michigan. I don't think I met two ppl from the same state. So much diversity.

Wow! What time was your interview?

I guess I didn't chat up too many of the other interviewees...I was busy doing some last-minute read-overs of some of my materials before the financial aid session and was only half-paying attention to the conversations around me.

Nice interviewing day. The interviewers I had were very nice, it is around 30 minutes and you get to talk to two doctors about yourself and your experiences. The ethics questions were not loaded and were very clear. They just want to see if you are a well adjusted person in these interviews so don't worry, and don't study for these interviews like a maniac.

Agreed (although my interview went over and was 45 minutes). I don't know about you, but my ethical questions were directly based on my experiences--which was both good and bad (I was expecting the typical blood transfusion/organ transplant questions and had answers prepared for those types of questions...and at the same time, having questions directly relating to my app helped because I usually had an experience to fall back on and talk about for my answer--or had enough background knowledge to answer the question completely hypothetically.)

it seems like 9/4 was like the OOS day or something. I interviewed at a smaller campus and everybody was OOS.

my interview was interesting though. i was asked like 2 questions about my application and the rest was all about ethics and modern issues in medicine. anybody else have a similar experience?

I interviewed at Indy, and my questions were all directly related to my application--whether they were asking about my volunteering or whether they were asking an ethical question based on my time as an RA in my dorm.

Has anyone that received an II around 8/16 had any further communication from them (e.g. date of interview)?

Also, I mailed in my forms on 8/17 and still none have been marked received. My letters of rec don't seem to have been received either.

It took them about a month to get back to me about a date, so I wouldn't worry yet at all. They have a lot of people they're communicating with and/or interviewing.

As others have said, be patient--it took them three weeks to mark two of my forms as received, and the last form wasn't marked received til the Friday before my interview that following Wednesday.

Figured I'd use a separate post to talk about my general thoughts regarding the interview.

Quick background: I'm OOS and I interviewed at the Indy campus on 9/4. My interviewers were two doctors and luckily the building I had to go to for my interview wasn't too far away from the building everyone starts off in (you have to find your way to your interview, though IU provides everyone with individualized detailed directions).

My thoughts on the day:

-the financial aid session felt super-long to me (it was an hour) and I was dying to be done about halfway through. I know it's an important topic--I guess with all the time I've spent reading posts about medical school financing on SDN + all the time I've researched it on my own there really wasn't much more to learn...
(However, I was shocked by the approximate OOS total cost of IUSM over four years--if you take out the full amount of loans allowed--before interest: $320K!!!)

-the med students were all super nice and I felt all of them gave real and honest answers to my (and other people's) questions. I also liked that we got to chat with med students not only during the panel, but also during our down-time (before the financial aid session + after the interview).

-as much as I initially regretted that there was no official tour scheduled, after walking around all day to all the different sessions + to my interview I was glad I didn't have to do any more walking around (my feet were killing me--yes, I regret wearing heels to IUSM's very large Indy medical campus).

My thoughts on the interview (kinda talked about this in my last post):

-The interview is 2 on 1 (or at least it was for me and a number of other interviewees at Indy's campus) for 30 minutes (or 45 in my case--my interviewers and I talked quite a bit 😳).

-I got asked a lot of ethical questions--but they were all directly related to experiences I'd noted on my application somewhere. Ex: was an RA in college --> was presented with a hypothetical underage intoxication situation. One question was even related to something I'd talked about in my PS: they asked me about a situation that I'd not personally encountered, but one I knew was a common occurrence with a particular type of medicine (I talked about this type of medicine & a condition treated by it a lot in my PS).

-ALL of the questions I got asked were directly related to my app. Know what you wrote on your primary (both your activities and your personal statement!) and be prepared to talk about your application thoroughly!! I ended up discussing almost every activity I'd done, from research to volunteering to being an RA to things discussed in my PS to even what I'd done in high school (and much more)!

-As much as my interviewers asked detailed/thorough questions and it was clear they'd done their research about my app, the interview was definitely very conversation-like--I'd respond, then they'd talk about my response and ask follow-up questions and/or sometimes talk about their own related experiences. They were very friendly, we laughed a bit during the interview, and I never felt like they were trying to trick me with a question or press me on an answer. My tip would be to relax--your interviewers are trying to be your advocates, not your barrier to admission.

Overall, it was a good interview day. 🙂 If I can get accepted & if I win the lottery for the Indianapolis campus (a lot of ifs, I know), I can see Indiana definitely near the top of my list (even though I'm an OOSer).

I had a 9/4 interview at a regional campus. I thought it went really horribly. One of my interviewers didn't look at me the entire time. I would say only one was somewhat welcoming. My interview was 45 minutes. I actually got some questions about the campus I was interviewing at, which I personally was not prepared for, as this was not supposed to affect anything about the admissions process. My ethical question was okay-i think they look to see that you can articulate your thinking process through these questions. My interview day made me pretty much certain that I would only go here if it was my only option.

Can you give me an example about what modern issues were brought up?

obamacare, language and cultural/religious barriers in medicine (the easiest example of this would be that jehova's witness situation) but there were other examples i don't want to discuss to try to preserve some anonymity

Does competition not mean anything to you, yoyohomieg5432????

Rejected pre-interview. Ironically I got an interview at IU last year.

what's the general protocol post-interview for med schools?

do you send like a thank you letter or anything? or updates?

Thank you e-mail to interviewers. But I am not sure whether IU is receptive towards updates.

Anyone else interviewing on October 2?? I just got the e-mail this morning. Pretty excited.

really? did you send one? i thought they mail all of the applications to the committee that meets once a month so does it really matter?

Well, at the end of the day, it probably won't matter as much. But I did it anyways.

Hi guys. Startin to freak out a little here. IU received my application Aug 16th and I've yet to get any word on secondaries/II. Anyone else who got their apps received round that time hear anything? Thanks!

I was verified on 7/31
received 'secondary' (ask for payment) on 8/1
payment sent 8/1

I received II on 8/23
sent my campus preference on 8/25
received interview preference confirmation/schedule on 9/10 for an interview on 10/9 in indianapolis.
I would not stress about not hearing back yet. It is a long process. However, I am not one to talk as I seem to stress myself out way to much over things such as this.

None of my forms have been marked either.

I received an e-mail saying they can't interview me at Indianapolis and will interview me at a regional campus instead.... this is frustrating. I'm flying out from California, and the other campuses seem to be 1-2 hours out from Indy.

Don't know if anyone else answered this, but if it's at Gary then that's only an hour away from Chicago, so you could fly there and drive down, if possible. It sucks, but there are many flights to Chicago from SFO and LAX if that's where you live. I asked to be interviewed there but I was informed today I'll be interviewing 10/9 at Indianapolis.

Isn't Gary really really sketchy? Like so sketchy that Chicago policemen recommend people to not stop at lights or stop signs because of people getting mugged from their cars.

Near the Gary campus is fine. Not all of Gary is a war zone. The campus is policed well and most people don't get mugged going to the Railcats games or taking the train into Chicago.

Wow. Ironic that you got Indy without requesting it. Oh well, I got Muncie. I'll make the best of my situation! good luck to all interviewing 🙂

I don't know if I just don't remember correctly but I don't think they have you pay at all prior to interview invite.

Once my primary was verified, I got an email from IU saying they received my app. Then I got an II a few weeks later. Then about three weeks after that I got my date.

Thank you, I really appreciate it.

Indeed. You are correct. I was confusing this secondary with the Mayo secondary (as both do not require any essays/additional information). Sorry for the slightly inaccurate information.
good luck

Just got an II from Indy!! 🙂 My second interview for this cycle!!

Just checked, and all my forms have been marked as complete. That's a relief.

Did those of you who interviewed submit your photo via mail or email?

I am interviewing but I am not sending in a picture. However, I am pretty sure you must mail it in. They really don't take anything via email.

Got an II...my first one this cycle! 😀

I have a few questions for you guys that I'm hoping you can help me with 🙂 :

1) Do we have to send our transcript directly to IU even if we sent it to AMCAS? Or is it just that we have to send transcripts as they are updated? My transcript hasn't changed since my primary app.

2) Do we have to send our MCAT scores directly to IU? I know the secondary app says "You must have the testing agency send scores directly to IUPUI," but isn't AAMC technically "the testing agency"? I don't see how we can send MCAT scores any other way except through AAMC 😕

3) Does the Dean's office have to send the Dean of Students evaluation form, or can we send it ourselves? I wanted to take the form to the Dean's office for them to fill out and then send it myself with the other 2 documents since I've had trouble in the past with my school's office sending documents out late and whatnot 😡

II today, first of the cycle! Verified primary 7/22, but my MCAT scores weren't released until about 2 weeks ago. OOS applicant, 3.8gpa and 33 MCAT. Good luck all!

ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!
cannot even CONTAIN myself!!!!

IS EDP applicant
3.9 sGPA and cGPA, 30 MCAT.

I called IUSM to ask when we would be notified. They said acceptance letters were mailed out Monday and that I should be getting one soon!!!
🙂

Rejected "pre-secondary"

Added ~ 8/25
OOS 31/3.9

At least they rejected me before it lost $$$

Accepted ED today as well! IS 30 MCAT 3.9 cGPA 3.9 sGPA. Congrats to everyone accepted so far! 🙂

Another acceptance here. EDP in-state, 3.95 GPA, 30 MCAT, PharmD degree

For those EDP who were accepted already, did you call in to find out, did your online account get updated, or did you already receive your letter? Just wandering. Thanks!

Accepted EDP IS as well 😀 so so happy! 32 MCAT, 3.9 gpa.

If it helps you, I was AMCAS verified on the 16th of August and I received my II on 9/23.

Got a letter in the mail yesterday.

Hi All,

I just joined SDN. I'm a first year and I am willing to help out by answering any questions. I may have already met some of you on interview day. I was part of the student panel. I'm also OOS, and I love IUSM so far 😀

Hi iusm2017md!

I received an interview invitation from IUSM, and I was wondering if you might be able to help me with a few questions:

1) Do we have to send our transcript directly to IU even if we sent it to AMCAS? Or is it just that we have to send transcripts as they are updated? My transcript hasn't changed since my primary app.
