2013-2014 Stony Brook University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those of you who have been accepted, anyone know what they are looking for in the "intent to enroll" letter? I was under the impression we had to send in these documents and the deposit to reserve our seat, but from how it was worded it sounds like it's binding. I'm almost certain that I'll be matriculating here because of how much I loved the school, but would still like to know.

Oh, and in case anyone was wondering:

Secondary complete (mid-July)
Interviewed (week of 9/16)
Accepted!!! (10/15 @ 12 pm)

3.8 sGPA/cGPA
30 MCAT

Best of luck to everyone else waiting to hear back/interviewing, stay patient! Stony Brook was absolutely amazing!

Congrats! It's not binding. You'll get your deposit back if you withdraw before May 15th 2014

I wrote a couple of sentences in my letter about how I intend to enroll, thanked the committee for offering me an acceptance and wrote about how I look forward to matriculating (just mailed out the letter + paperwork this morning).

Hope to see you there in August!

For those of you that are accepted, what are you guys mailing in?

Correct me if I am wrong: 1) A letter stating my intent to hold a spot. 2) Signed technical form, 3) Deposit.

Is that it?

EDIT: Actually you pay deposit on their SOLAR network. So does that mean we can just email in a letter stating intent to hold + the signed technical standard form? Or will "snail mail" be the preferred way to mail these documents in?

i snail mailed tech form and letter. SOLAR for the payment.

I called admissions and asked about this; it's fine to scan and email them the intent and tech forms. I'll be doing this today!

Is letter of intent just a letter we type up saying we'd like to hold a spot in the incoming class?

Figured I should add this: II 4 days ago!

Complete 9/19, II 10/16 Dates are mid November

Just got waitlisted.. I thought my interview went well, but apparently I didn't make the cut..sigh...

How likely are people from the waitlist getting accepted eventually?

Sorry to hear that 🙁
Mind sharing when you interviewed?

Looks like there is high priority waiting list and regular waiting list.

From the last year thread, most people from HPWL got accepted and only a few from regular did. Well, I guess I'll send some letters for updates and intent later on, but it looks like I should safely expect to be rejected at the end.

hope you will hear better news soon from other schools.

Are we informed which list we are placed on?

Yes, it will be clear in the email they send. HPWL doesn't go out until all seats are taken up, and these go to people they would've accepted had they had open seats.

Does this mean that initially the waitlist is unranked but later this changes to a ranked waitlist?

I don't think so.

HPWL happens when students should have been accepted if spots were available. I think the regular WL is also ranked and people from WL don't get upgraded to HPWL. Once you are on WL, you don't get accepted until people above you in WL rank and HPWL either withdraw or get accepted.

My understanding is that (according to my interviewer) there are 80 people on the ADCOM and they vote.. my guess on how you're ranked is by how many yes's you get, the more, the higher you are placed on the waitlist. Above a certain number though you'll be accepted, and below a certain number you'll be rejected.

Okay, well I am not sure who else is on the waitlist right now, but I guess I was on the middle, gray area where I was neither rejected nor accepted when they voted..

I interviewed on 9/26 and am an OOS. Should i begin to worry yet?

Hey everyone, I submitted my secondary about a month ago and received an email confirmation, but I never got an email saying that I was complete. Is that normal? All my other schools have received my transcript and letters through AMCAS, but there's no way to check with Stony.

Is the secondary app confirmation enough, or should I be waiting on an email to say that I'm complete too?

I received a confirmation of my payment, a 'secondary received' email 1 day later, and a 'secondary complete' email a week later.

I applied back in August, so maybe it's just taking longer for you because they have more applications now.

nothing here but I only interviewed exactly two weeks ago. Hope to hear back in the next two weeks.. but likely bet on less than a month.

I interviewed on 9/12 and still silence. I'm holding on to the hope that no news is good news. Have any of the guys interviewed 9/12 heard anything yet (A/WL/R/Anything)?

Has anyone gotten a confirmation email for their deposit? I only got the email for the forms we needed to send in but in the email it said we should receive another confirmation for our deposit.

They charged my credit card... but haven't gotten an email yet.

You got a separate confirmation for your paperwork? I didnt. I called and asked, they said not to worry because the bursar only sends them deposits every now and then.

Yeah I got an email confirming they received the forms (intent and tech forms), and in it they said I should receive another one for the deposit. But yeah then I guess there shouldn't be a problem with the deposit then, as long as it's paid. Thanks guys!

I had a dream a few nights ago that I'd been rejected here. When I woke up I thought I remembered checking my email for the rejection in the middle of the night and that it had actually happened, so for the past few days I've been going along thinking I had been rejected until I rechecked my email this morning and realized it was a dream 😳

Nothing yet. Same day as you.

Haha I see that the application process is getting to you 🙂

I remember there was a guy in my interview class (10/4) who had to drive from Jersey to Stony Brook via TAXI b/c he missed his flight from I think Philly to NY so had to catch another flight to Jersey. $240 taxi ride. Holy ****.
