2013-2014 Washington University in St. Louis Application Thread

II! Complete 7/16. I didn't fill out the optional essay (I know there was some debate about this earlier).

On a side note, does anyone know how many interviews WashU offers and how many students they take (I know it's a LOT)? My excitement about interviews is always crushed when I realize that the acceptance rate post-interview is still 20%, at best.

Congrats on your II!

I don't know about WashU specifically, but in general acceptance rates after interviews are higher, something like 20-50% depending on the school (somewhere between 1/5 and 1/3 for most competitive schools).
However, as vc7777 mentioned in the Case thread, post-interview acceptance is not like a door lottery, it's not like every 5th person who walks through the door gets acceptance. Stronger applicants have higher chances, and vice versa. Bottom line is, you can't really predict the outcome.
Also, this is a bit a of speculation, but it seems like schools tend to invite applicants they like most first. So, getting an early II is a good sign 😉

Congrats! Mind providing your stats? And to answer you question per USNWR:

For entering class of 2013:

Applicants: 3527
Interviewed: 1100
Accepted: 357
Enrolled: 124

About one third of all applicants get interviews, and one third of interviewees get acceptances, resulting in one tenth of all applicants getting accepted - the odds are not bad at all compared to some other schools 🙂 Apparently, this is because not that many people apply to WashU (compared to schools that get 7 or 10-12 thousands applicants). But then again, WashU applicants may be stronger than average med school applicants, I guess at lot of people are scared by the high stats WashU likes...
Don't mind me, just thinking out loud

WashU accepts a few people with mediocre stats each year, because they know the rest of the entering class will have such high numbers that the effect on the averages of the entering class is negligible. So I threw my hat into the ring. Would love to go here

is it normal to get an MD-only invite before getting the MSTP invite here? Also, is there a protocol for delayed responses to an interview invite? If I get the MSTP invite I probably wouldn't want to interview twice at the same place just given time constraints :S

Complete: 7/16/2013
Interview Invite: 9/13/2013

For those who got interviews: did you get an email or just check your status page? Because I haven't gotten any emails, but my WUMS status page says Interview Offer Date: 9/13/13. So I'm guessing that's a II, but just wanted to make sure before I get all excited lol.

Congrats, I'm sure it's real, but maybe they do things in random order regarding notification of the invite, because I just checked my status and there's no change, yet I got an email with an invite. Maybe they mixed us up and that email was meant for you 😉 After all, the email wasn't addressed to any particular applicant haha.

Does anyone know if we're confirmed for our interview right after we click on the available dates, or are we not confirmed until after we update our arrival/departure and lodging information? I don't think I'll know what time I'll be arriving until closer to the actual interview date.

Haha thanks. I did finally get an email, but of course now there are no open dates on the calendar, so I guess I have to wait to schedule my interview.

Okay, now I'm confused. I was told in the email to call someone at a number to schedule my interview and that person told me the open dates. I don't have any type of calendar on my status check page. Am I the only one?

Hmmmm idk, i just clicked on "visit arrangements", and there is a calendar there, but it has no open dates so I think we are just supposed to call to schedule.

Congrats! When were you complete?

Got invited a few days ago! I was SO happy until I realized....it's SOOO FAR from where I live. no way to avoid an expensive flight for this one. Damn.

Possible to catch an outbound flight leaving at 4pm on interview day?

Email admissions and they may be able to give you a morning interview, no guarantees though.

for a school that sends out 1/3 of its applicants interviews, it doesn't seem like a lot are going out so far.. at least on sdn

I couldn't agree more with calgirl1234. Well may be the interviews will pick up later in the season. so far from the few people that posted on here, I saw that they are all 4.0/40 or URMs with very good stats. I wish Washu is not so obsessed with stats.
congrats to those who got interviews though

Interviewing 10/2! Kind of wish I had given myself more time to prepare...

3.6(3.8 recent)/40, graduated in December 2009, Decided to apply for medical school after a year working in South Africa very closely affiliated with a hospital.

i realized that i submitted washu but did not pay application fee. this was when the cycle first opened, in july. i remember that it was strongly recommended that one submit ones secondary before 2 or 4 weeks (dont remember the timeframe).

how legit is this timeframe? does anyone know? should i bother paying the fee now? will my application be thrown out?

thanks.

Does anyone know how long the interview day is at WashU? What time to what time?

Thanks!

It seems like they are inviting high stats first, so it's possible they are just sorting applications and putting high stats on top. If that's the case, and you have high stats, it would be worth it to apply.

I have decent stats, LizzyM of 76. But, checking a little more in-depth, the application PDF says don't take more than 4 weeks to submit the secondary application after receiving it, as a kind of requirement. I am not throwing $80 away. I'm already eating cardboard and wood these days anyway, think I'll have to start stealing cabbage from the garbage bin to get by soon.

There is an optional 8pm dinner/mixer the night before and an optional breakfast at 7am with student clubs, but otherwise registration is at 7:45am and interviews end at 3pm.

Does anyone know how many interview dates and slots are still available?

Hey guys--how serious is their request to submit the secondary within 4 wks? i never read that and submitted 2-3 days after my amcas was verified. is this a killer for me? complete 9-7

Interview invitation tonight! 😀 I didn't fill out the optional essay after reading previous applicants' assurances that it was truly optional

Congrats! What interview dates were available?

Thanks! : ) Monday, 10/21 was the earliest I remember seeing, with other days of the week available as well. (In October, it looked like the interview days were M/T/Th/F; I didn't check November)

Does anyone know what interview style is? MMI, one-on-one traditional, panel?
