2013-2014 Washington University in St. Louis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know if Washington University is responsive to "in the area" e-mails?

II today!!! Could not be more excited... 38, 3.9 OOS

Congrats! It is a really relaxed day and everyone is incredibly friendly. My interviewer had an extremely impressive resume, but could not have been more welcoming to me!

Good Luck!

Anyone on this forum or current Washu med student know when will the first letters of rejection be sent out? I am expecting one. I figure if you're not good enough for them, at least they can do you a favor by letting you know early. This waiting game sucks.

At least I respect Mayo for letting the people they want to reject know about the decision very early in the game.

Help

WashU unfortunately doesn't reject MD only applicants until January. At least that's the way it's been in the past.

'nother 3rd year student here, willing to answer any questions! (and not full scholarship like some others here...) 😛

What was the style of the interviews? I heard its very casual and relaxed, but what was the length? Does everyone have two interviews?

Also, has anyone ridden the train into WashU? Was it easy?

Thanks!

Mine was around 45 minutes IIRC. I think most people just have one interview, but some get 2.

The train system in st louis is really easy to navigate. If you are flying into st louis, just take the red line (which is the only train you can take) from airport to the central west end stop, and you will be right on the med school campus.

How common are the merit scholarships here? Do many students get 1/2 tuition or more covered?

I think they are pretty common, they told my interview group that every year about 12-16 people get full tuition merit scholarships

They also give out grants to cover extra need. So let's say it's 50k a year and your family can only contribute 20k. WashU will give you half of the remaining 30k need in loans and the other half in scholarship.

Merit scholarships are definitely awarded here, and many students that don't get half or full scholarships still receive competitive financial aid packages. WashU takes care of their own!

II here today! I can't believe it; definitely in shock right now. Complete 6th Sep.

But I'm having trouble scheduling the interview. There don't seem to be any dates left. I wonder what that means...

Congrats! Don't worry about not seeing dates on the calendar, for some reason they don't put all the dates on there. Just call and they will help you schedule your interview.

I think it's because they celebrate April fools a little bit early in St. Louis ;-)

Wow interview invite today! Complete 7-9 so for those of you still waiting there's still hope! Available interview dates were November 18th, 19th, and 21st.

To people with interview invites: Has your status page changed in any way?

Yes, on the status page below "According to our records and procedures your file is Complete. " there is "Interview Offer Date: (date)". Plus, on the left side panel there is a Visit Arrangements link under Change My Password link.

Thanks.
Going to write a script to regularly check my status for me so I don't miss it.

Amygdarya, when is your interview date with Washu? I guess I have been passed over.
(laugh) I'm trying to save at least some shreds of my anonymity: I'm a pretty unusual candidate, so if I give you my interview date, people at the interview will know exactly who I am. Let's just say first half of November - but this is the date I selected for my personal reasons, at the time I arranged my interview date (early October), dates were available in mid and late October as well. So, to all of you worrying that interview spots are filling up fast, relax: it seems like WashU spaces its IIs and interview dates really well.

If that's of any help, I was complete (email and status) on 7/29 and received my II (email and status) on 10/1. Very non-trad, 38 MCAT, 3,96 cGPA, 4.00 sGPA (all undergrad), graduate degree, *tons* (and I mean it) of research, substantial clinical experience, other substantial activities, "interesting life story" (top schools seem to care about that).

Thanks for the info. I read our profile on mdapps and admire your accomplishments. I'm sort of in the same situation as you. Any how, you've done great. Congratulations on your interview at Washu. And best of luck on your interview date.

Thank you for your kind words. I'm extremely happy and grateful to have the IIs that I have, including the awesome WashU. (So looking forward to my interview!)
Best of luck to you, too! People "in our situation" (if I understand you correctly) - decent stats, good research and interesting life experiences - seem to do well in this process (as long as there are no red flags), since above a certain MCAT/GPA threshold schools start to care about "stories".

WashU interviews till March, so there are still plenty of interview spots for those of you who are still waiting 🙂

And how many puppies do you save out of burning buildings every week?

According to MSAR, the first set of acceptances should be coming in 2 days!!!

After a wave of waitlists...really hoping for this one to pull through. But, from talking to the first years here, it seems like most people get waitlisted up front.

MD invite via portal today after MSTP rejection a few months ago! Still no emails tho... Really hoping this isn't some kind of mistake.

for people who have interviewed here, did you guys go to the breakfast? how useful/fun/awkward was it? do most people go to this? i want free food and it seems cool meeting some of the student groups beforehand, but i'm not sure i want to wake up that early.

yeah it seemed to me like all of the applicants went. i was also worried about "awkwardness" but the pizza party and the breakfast were really chill, and the pizza was surprisingly good none of that papa johns dominos pizza hut stuff but the good stuff haha. besides your student tour (which is really nice because it's one on one or two to one or so) its the only student interaction you get, so it'll give you a more complete view of what the student body is like. also no one even mentioned student groups during my breakfast thing, it was more just hanging out and asking questions, hah. best of luck!!

How many applicants are there on an average interview day?
So, there are no students to schmooze with at lunch?
Were there any MS3 and MS4 students at breakfast/tours?
Thank you!

I think there were like 10-12 people when I was interviewing. There were students to talk to at lunch, and the dean of admissions actually stopped by to chat with us too, he's really nice and told some funny stories. And my tour guide was actually and MS4, and then a few MS3 students joined us during the lunch, so we could ask questions about the clinical years.

This sounds just perfect! I love it when there are many opportunities to talk to clinical years students. Thank you runnergirl6! So looking forward to my interview!

Just wanted to add that all of the students (or at least nearly so) at the pizza dinner were MS1s.

Also, I have no idea why you guys would expect it to be awkward in the slightest.

The interview day here is pretty chill... so don't stress too much about it. The current med students all seemed happy and (relatively) relaxed, which is always reassuring. Good luck to anyone interviewing here, I really enjoyed my interview day!

I have a question about the Dean's Certificate -- does anyone know how long it takes them to mark that they've received it? I ask because my school said they sent it early last week, but there still isn't a checkmark by it on the status page.

I think it was a week and a half from the day my school sent it to when it was marked received.

Another quick question: what time does the pre-interview pizza dinner end? I won't be able to make it to WashU by 8 pm, but I wonder if I can still catch some people at the dinner even if I arrive a bit later.
Thank you!

about an hour, hour half. it probably varies from day to day.

Thank you for your quick response! Well, I'll have to miss it then. But it seems like there are going to be plenty of opportunities to talk to WashU students during the interview day, so I guess it's OK.
