2013-2014 Washington University in St. Louis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Not sure if this is worth very much/ anything, but the class fb group has ~125 people. That is right around the class size, but I was under the impression that most schools over accept by a fair number. I would think that there are more acceptances to go out. It sounds like admissions is changing it's process this year, so I don't really know what's going on.

not sure if this helps u but there was an invitation to join the fb group sent to accepted students last week. it had 250 recipients

Oops. Didn't even think to look at that. Kind of surprising that they didn't bcc everyone. Anyways, sorry for the incomplete information.

Who has already applied for financial aid? OMG, it's such a chore. They ask for information that's very hard to give them (accurately).

Another waitlist... I don't even care anymore.

When did you find out you were waitlisted? I interviewed at the very beginning of the cycle and have heard nothing, so I'm assuming a rejection, but it would be very nice to know for sure.

I think he's just assuming based on the size of the FB group email. We probably would have seen a lot more posts here if true waitlists actually went out.

So it's still possible to receive an acceptance if you interviewed in early March and haven't heard anything yet? Or are decisions most likely WLs/Rejections at this point?

I don't think there are any guarantees, but since it is rolling, the longer it takes, the more likely it is to be a WL or a rejection, unfortunately.

Oh well. It was all a dream but I'm very fortunate to have been accepted to my state school so in the end we'll still be doctors right

Did anyone get an email about second look? I know it's going to be April 25-27, but wonder if they have sent out the detailed plan.

I received the following on the 18th:

I am pleased to invite you to the 2014 Revisit Weekend at Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM),Thursday, April 24-Sunday, April 27. To give you a sense of how the weekend is structured, I’m attaching last year’s schedule. We will send you this year’s schedule as soon as it is finalized. This year’s program will follow the same general format and WUSM will cover round trip travel, hotel, and meals. The first activity takes place Thursday evening and the last activity ends around midday on Sunday. We hope that you can join us next month; just complete the travel form and email or fax it to my attention by Monday, March 31. Please respond even if you choose not to attend so that we can keep track of our count for the weekend.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I hope you can join us in April!

With warm regards,

With warm regards,

I only got one short email on March 10th asking me if I would like to attend the second look. Didn't get this long one. I'll email them to make sure. Do you know who sent out this email? Thanks a lot!

The last I heard was a "save the date" in late February... nothing asking if I'd like to attend.

The email was from Lisa Stevenson, who is the assistant dean of admissions.

Is this for MD/PhD or something? I received a very different email yesterday (MD only):
I invite you to revisit Washington University School of Medicine for a second look at the School and to explore St. Louis. Our students have planned a great weekend and look forward to hosting you April 25th – 27st. Please mark your calendar now and save the date.
Although we cannot pay for your travel to St. Louis, we can pay for your lodging, food and social expenses while you are here. Generally, we can accommodate spouses and fiancés, but not parents.
The goal is to have abundant time for you to talk to current students and learn about student life, to get a feel for the School and to get to know your future classmates. Our medical students are eager to escort you around St. Louis, to show you the sights and to answer your questions. Although the weekend’s schedule will be finalized soon, here are some of the highlights of what’s planned.
  • Welcoming Reception with faculty
  • Dinner with Admissions Deans and student coordinators
  • Student Musical
  • Medical Center tours
  • Keynote faculty presentations
  • Presentation on curriculum and student activities
  • Lunch on the town and visits to favorite student hang-outs and destinations
  • Dinner with your future classmates
  • An after dinner student-organized party
  • Sunday brunch and apartment tours
So, mark your calendar now for the weekend of April 25, 26 and 27. Plan to arrive by 3:00 p.m. on Friday so that you can join in the activities before the dinner on Friday that starts at 6:00 p.m. You can plan to depart on Sunday any time after noon. A detailed schedule will be sent to you in early April.
As soon as you know whether you are able to join in, please reply to [email protected]. Please respond no later than Tuesday, April 8th, so that we can reserve a room for you.
I hope to see you April 25th and when the 2014 First Year Class assembles in August!
Notice the difference in dates and not paying for travel, haha 😀 Oh, and no attachments either (no forms to fill out etc.).
I hope I'm not multiplying the confusion here...

Wait now I'm confused, because I'm just MD only candidate. I was surprised that they were covering travel. Weird.

You have a merit scholarship, yes?
Yep, I think this must be either because of merit scholarship or URM/disadvantaged or something like that. Either of these could also explain both the paid travel and the expanded program.

Plus a few (<5) unmatched or partially matched.
This is a little concerning: 5 people out of not such a big class (120 students or so) is a substantial number. I wonder if they only applied to the top programs in ultracompetitive specialties.

I dont have a merit scholarship. But yes, I am an URM. that should be it. The email's subject was "Office of Diversity Programs, Washington University School of Medicine" so that should explain it.

so are the rest of us who haven't heard anything essentially waiting for a waitlist..?

so are the rest of us who haven't heard anything essentially waiting for a waitlist..?

It's been 4.5 weeks since any acceptances went out (if I calculate correctly), and people have interviewed during that time. My guess is that one more very small round of acceptances will go out either this Friday or next. The rest of us will be waitlisted/rejected in early to mid-April. This is just speculation, though.

I like this optimism and choose hope even though I'm expecting yet another waitlist.

+2 Ive heard it usually does move.
The med students at my interview day definitely stressed that there is typically a decent amount of movement. The number I heard was something like half the class comes from the wait list.

Also, @Amba @nephron19 did you guys put anything in the "comments box for the wait list inquiry page? I'm not sure what they're looking for with that...

I had previously sent a letter of intent, so I just wrote a sentence where I re-iterated that. I'm sure it's fine if you leave it blank; I doubt it makes a difference.

This is true. We had 1/2 my class come off the wait list and that's pretty typical I believe. Good luck to all!

I also got the waitlist this morning. Did anyone who interviewed after February 15th get anything other than a waitlist? Has anyone been rejected post-interview?
