2014-2015 Duke University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
does anyone know the % of interviewees Duke accepts?

I'm guessing that students who are accepted to Duke generally have options, so Duke probably needs to accept 2-3 applicants to fill each seat. I doubt that the actual number is published anywhere, though.

According to US Compass, Duke interviewed 521 out of 4962 applicants and accepted 201, after which 113 enrolled.

The cliche "there are no atheists in foxholes" apparently has a corollary: "there are few penguinless medical school aspirants." Okay, okay. . .superstition. Some days I'm willing to base my hopes on even shakier foundations. (I did keep the India theme, though. . .I am not sure what the penguin motif says about India, though. I'm identifying right now with the penguin awkwardly frozen on the shore, and I want to be the one braving the frigid vastness of the ocean!)

I'm super-worried. My UG school is one of those in which a "composite writer" gathers all the letters and other materials and puts a packet together. I had to have all my "stuff" in before June 1, and know that the packet was passed along to the "senders" in mid-June, but it was not verified until August 1. Despair. I got one II, but every email check is another exercise in futility. LizzyM is just 74, and no significant scientific research. . .I was one of those humanities majors who fulfilled the premed requirements. Alas! Woe is me!!!
I've received 2 II's and a hold from the Cleveland Clinic since I changed my avatar to a penguin. WHOA...

I'm just paranoid enough to believe that those two might be correlated.
EDIT: switched to a penguin avatar. let's see how this turns out!
EDIT: got paranoid again. switched back to nothing.

I've had the penguin for over a month and I have received no love from any school.
Lt. Yash, with all due respect, your penguin may want to turn that frown upside down! 😀 I hope those schools get some sense and send you some love really soon. (I hate waiting. . . waiting. . . waiting.)

Does Duke send rejections, or do they hold all applications until the end of the interview season (and no news is bad news)?

They send rejections before the end of interview season, but I don't believe they sent out emails of the status change last year (you had to check online.)

Just had my interview today. MMI is definitely interesting. I'll post a brief synopsis on MDapps later. Some things I thought were interesting: 1) they said only about half of supplement applications sent out were returned and they expect 7000+ applications this year. 2) last year they interviewed 693 people and had 690 people complete the interview survey required to send the application for AEC review and this differs significantly from the numbers reported by USNWR GradCompass. 3) as others have said, the closing remarks by Dean Wallace were the highlight of the day. In my opinion, the speech alone was worth the the cost of applying to Duke. Good Luck!

So it appears as if the number of applications has increased considerably this cycle.

Anyone know the protocol for sending updates to Duke? I didn't put down my gap year activity on the Duke secondary application.

I haven't been rejected from Duke yet (going on 2.5 months of being screened). I thought maybe November if I still haven't been rejected??

(This is a reach for me, but I'm within the MSAR ranges statistically and have good ECs/research/undergrad.)

I was reading the Duke App process and it says if you are not granted an interview you will not receive anymore communication. Is there any way to tell if you are rejected or not?

I'm pretty sure that the Duke Secondary portal keeps tabs on your status. Based on other people's responses in the thread, you won't receive an email if you're rejected but it will show up on the App Status page of the portal.

I called them and asked if we are allowed to send updates before getting an II and they said "No! Wait for the invite!"

Well I got tired of waiting 😛 and I was sending updates to other schools I loved and so I sent one to Duke as well. They don't seem to list their admissions email on the website so I e-mailed my PDF 1 page letter (an update letter + a LOI) to Dean Armstrong and her secretary. This was ~3 weeks ago. I've been complete since 07/01/2014, pretty good ties to Duke.

No response yet so I wouldn't bother sending in an update until after an II! Just my 2 cents...

That's funny because I called and they were very welcoming toward update letters.

Post-Interview updates can be directed to Director Wallace, FYI. I know that doesn't help many of you, but maybe it'll help someone at some point! Source: I talked to the staff yesterday at my interview.

Did they say anything about post interview questions?

The interview was really chill! Can't really do anything to prepare. My first station went kinda of meh because I was nervous, but after that it was a lot of fun! the only downside is the length 🙁
Even at two hours total time I felt like it went pretty quickly. I found it very enjoyable overall!

In general I find MMI's to be a lot less awkward since you and your interviewer know exactly what both of you are going to talk about.

Hey all,

I am interviewing here next week and wanted to ask if anyone has stayed in the University Inn?

If yes, how was it?? Okay?

I'm probably going to stay at a Marriott property close next week. I'd be willing to split costs and I'll be renting a car too. Let me know. I'm planning on going to the Chipotle thing too.

Thanks for the offer!! I ended up booking at the Hilton. Will see you at the Chipotle event if you are going on Sunday!
