2014-2015 Quinnipiac University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got the email too! I'm hoping to send an update later end of this month if I don't hear anything back or don't get an II.

Do you guys think TAing is something that is update worthy?

I'm not sure. Does anyone else have thoughts on this? The only new thing I am doing is editing essays now as a side job. I couldn't take on anything else because as of the last month, I am taking on a ton more responsibility at my current research job. Worth an update if I can spin it well or probably not?

I just got the email as well.

QU does have great staff. It's really telling of the institution that they would spend the time to at least send an update e-mail amongst the months of no reply. I got the same vibe when I visited the school. All the faculty care about what you have to say and they take the time to be cordial (can you imagine having to deal with hundreds of pre-meds, dear god). I respect their efforts a lot and it makes me even more hopeful for their interview decision...

Finally got the email too!

I actually appreciate this. I wish more schools would do this instead of the constant silence....
While I appreciate the email, I would appreciate if they started some pre-interview rejections. I find it hard to believe that all 7000+ applicants are so qualified they can't cut at least 10% for example. If I were to be rejected pre-interview, I'd rather know now.

It's hard to say whether they are already doing what you said. With 7,000+ applications the chance that many people are 1.) NOT on SDN, 2.) NOT posting their rejections is actually probably the majority of people. Keep in mind SDN is a non-representative population of applicants. You're still in the running! Be careful what you wish for. I just posted in the Western Michigan thread that I initially thought I had been rejected after the initial phone interview (yep, phone) in early September. I did not hear a SINGLE peep from them after my phone interview. I wrote it off and sadly assumed a rejection headed my way in the coming months. Today, in the morning, I find an interview invite from them to visit their campus.

If you're on SDN, chances are, you're passionate and serious about medicine! Do yourself a favor, take a deep breath and go outside and sit in the sun for a bit. Get drunk at morning brunch. Cook a new recipe. It definitely helped me when I got waitlisted (essentially a rejection) from one of my state schools.

It sounds like you misunderstood where I am coming from. I am by no means sitting on the edge of my seat burning with anxiety to hear back from any school at this moment. Thanks for the unsolicited advice.

They sent this same email out last year, although it was a little later:

"01/10/2014

Dear FIRST NAME LAST NAME [yes, they sent it just like this to everyone],

We understand you are eagerly awaiting to hear an updated status on your application, and we thank you for your patience. For the entering Fall 2014 class at the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine, we were honored to receive an even higher number of applications than we anticipated. We are working hard to evaluate the applications as expeditiously as possible while ensuring each application is given fair and thorough consideration.

We will be interviewing applicants until the end of March and issuing interview invitations until shortly before that time. If you have yet to hear from us, please know that your application remains under consideration. In order to make the best use of our time, we kindly ask that you refrain from making inquiries into the status of your application as we will contact you directly should there be any change or action needed on your part.

Please note that any additions you would like to make to your application are only able to be done by uploading documents via your secondary application. If you have questions about specific aspects of your application, as always you are welcome to contact us.

Sincerely,

Michael Ellison, EdD

Associate Dean for Admissions"

I apologize. I did indeed misinterpret your post. Did not mean to be overbearing and I wish you the best of luck.

Exactly. I did them and myself a favor and withdrew before receiving this email.

got that e mail too. if they're following the same procedures as last year, then expect to get a Christmas card from them in a few weeks. it does NOT mean anything special. and as I said last year, while I agree it's a nice gesture- as well as these cute little e-mail updates- an interview invite would be a whole lot better. and I also agree that if they really have 7,000 applicants, it wouldn't kill them to thin the herd out a little bit.

I recently received an acceptance to this school and will likely matriculate. These are my main reasons:

- I'm from the east coast, so I would be close to home (big reason)
- QU has a great network and many resources, and has leveraged these to equip the medical school with incredible, state of the art technology. To those of you who have seen the school, you can attest that it is truly remarkable (smart classrooms, beautiful anatomy lab, etc).
- Like stated previously, the faculty at this school are devoted to the students. This is a teaching-first school. When I went to the open house, one of the professors led the tour, answering all of the questions with great enthusiasm. He was so excited to be teaching there. I've never seen that at another medical school.
- Innovative curriculum. IMO, QU has devised a curriculum that many schools wish they could adopt, but cannot because radically changing a traditional curriculum is not as easy as it may sound. They have a great mixture of lectures, PBL, interdisciplinary projects, etc.
- Early clinical exposure through the MeSH program. Additionally, I was told that they are in the process of developing a student-run (supervised, of course) clinic. No doubt they will continue to add things that will benefit their students (and the community.)
- It is a new school. Some might say it is a leap of faith to matriculate at a program that has yet to place students into residency programs. It sure is. But what I've concluded about new schools (in particular QU), is that they put extraordinary effort into making sure their first several graduating classes succeed, and then succeed some more. The entire school's reputation rides on how the first few classes perform. They realize that. They respond to what the students need, they provide a ton of resources, they take an active role in each student's progress. They actually care.

... in essence, I have been nothing short of impressed with this school. Going into the process, QU was one of my top choices, and I feel honored that they have accepted me. I have no doubt in my mind that they are going to recruit a superb Class of 2019. Something is special about this place, and the strong sense of community is easily palpable.

I hope many of your are interested in this school, because you should be. If anybody has specific questions, I can do my best to help. Best of luck to all of you!

(this is my 1st post to SDN, sorry if I rambled)

If anyone wants to interview on Nov. 14th, I've just withdrawn my II. Best of luck at this school!

waitlisted today 🙁 interviewed on 10/24

Wow, that is a quick turnaround. On interview day I thought they said it would take about 1 month, but perhaps they are ahead of schedule.

I know haha but who knows maybe that, or they had an early meeting just for me lol

Does anyone know if the interview is closed or open file?

I'm still on the fence as to if I want to attend this interview. I know everyone will say "don't go" at the aspect of another interview slot opening.. but I really am lost. I have an acceptance at a mid-tier school (MCW) and don't know how this one compares to it. It's hard to make a judgment without an established resource to look at.. ugh

You earned it, if you aren't sure then just go. Me and a 1000 other applicants would love to have the chance to interview there.

go if you don't have to pay a lot of money to fly. but if you really don't think you would attend anyways then what's the point?

This is just me, but quinnipiac and MCW seem like similar caliber schools, at this point then it comes down to where you want to live. I personally think Hamden would be a cool place to live, an hour from NYC and 1.5 hours from boston. I would go to the interview - ill be there on dec 1st!!

I was in a similar situation, had some acceptances, almost withdrew but decided to go out of curiosity, to check out the new program, and bc it was nearby. I am extremely glad I did because I got such a good feeling from the place and am seriously considering attending if accepted.

My interview is scheduled Dec. 1 as well. If I go, I hope to see you there 🙂

Waitlisted today. Interviewed 10/24. Can anyone shed some light on how good the movement off the waitlist is?

I highly recommend going to your interview if you can afford it and think that their is even a chance that you may go there. It is an incredibly impressive institution with very welcoming professors. While it is new, I see this place becoming an excellent medical school with a good reputation once times takes its course. They have recruited a great group of faculty from IVY league schools in the area and institutions around the country who share a passion for teaching medical students to be practicing physicians. The facilities are top notch, and while you are taking a chance going there (small in my opinion) just because no one has matched in residencies yet, you have the opportunity to know you contributed to the beginning of something potentially great.

OOS Interview -- 8/25. Rejected couple weeks ago; First interview person I had told me I didn't have enough "life experiences". I'm pretty sure this school prefers non-traditional applicants.
