2014-2015 Tulane University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Update: The Maison Dupuy has rates for Tulane that are like $99 or $149, but only Sunday-Thursday (although I might cancel if I hear about a student host). I'm actually coming in early Sunday morning for a Monday interview, so I'm hoping to at least have the day to walk around the French Quarter and sightsee! I think there is a Packers game that day, so that is probably why the Holiday Inn and others were booked up lol.. Is anyone here interviewing October 27? 🙂

Hey all, my interview is next Friday and I still haven't heard about the student host (I submitted the form a week and a half/two weeks ago). Has anyone else heard back yet?

Tulane School of Medicine is downtown in the CBD (Central Business District). The undergrad campus is in Uptown, which is a bit away (by New Orleans standards).
That's true!! Sorry. Native New Orleanian here and just don't think of Tulane Med as downtown, on Poydras, right across from the Superrdome. With that said, the link I provided is even more advantageous - walkable. Apologies for any confusion.

If "clean" and "modern" are important attributes to you, you're gonna have a bad time in New Orleans.
I think that's a pretty unfair statement as a whole. Hyatt is right across the street from Med School, brand spanking new - within last 2.5 years.

that is so important to know!

Actually the medical school is in the CBD. Hotels and food in the CBD and the quarter are pricy. Check out airbnb.com. People rent out there extra rooms for a few nights all over new orleans and most are cheaper than hotels and you get to stay with a local which you could use for a crash course on our fair city.

I saw a couple of instances of someone asking about a "preliminary rejection" status. I'm assuming that means an ultimate rejection notification will be sent. Does this generally seem to be the case?

Also, for those of you questioning the rejection of applicants with admirable academic pedigrees, keep in mind that Tulane loves non-traditional applicants. While I can't speak on behalf of their admissions crew, I can tell you that I have seen a trend towards acceptance of applicants who have dynamic stories to tell.

EDIT: Nevermind. This might help those with inquiring minds:

Lol, the room I choose to sleep in does not have to reflect the city I choose to live in. Excuse me if I don't enjoy sleeping in filth. I would much prefer to sleep on the dirt in the forest (and do so often when I camp.)There are certainly more traditional style rooms that are clean available in the area, but they are also more expensive. With so many variables I prefer to just go with a known quantity in the Holdiay Inn and get my dose of culture through my adventures and not necessarily my bedroom. New Orleans, for obvious reasons, is an amazing city and cannot wait to spend some time there.

Yes I sent them an email and they paired me that night.

Was there a long period between the time you all submitted your secondary and then got a complete email? I have the email that my secondary was received, the website says they have all my information and my status is In Progress, but I never got a complete email that was mentioned I would get when my application would be complete and under review. Been about 3 weeks, hopefully I'm just being anxious.

I received it the next day. If your status is "In progress," I would imagine you are good to go. Maybe it got sent to your spam?

I checked, no dice :/ But I just went back and looked at the portal and it does say Application File Complete, so maybe I'll just assume I accidentally deleted it and stress about it for the rest of the year hahaha

You all are a riot.

Take your debates about western imperial ideology and mindset elsewhere as they are not constructive to this discussion on Tulane (I am not endorsing either side just get the shenanigans out of this thread).

as for some people who are asking about housing, you have to understand that almost all of the interview day stuff is done by student volunteers. We plan pretty much everything (with assistance from the admissions office) and so it generally relies on our busy schedules and us finding time to do it. The housing people can only give you a student host if there are enough volunteers and they also try to match people with hosts who might have similar interests. Believe me when I say us students who plan this stuff try hard to make the interview experience as awesome as possible, but we are limited by what we can do as students and how many of our fellow students have time to volunteer...that said I am excited to see y'all this coming interview season!

it took over a month to get my complete email :/

For all of you waiting on hosts, T1s just got an email on Monday about signing up to host. So the list of hosts is still being finalized and more people should be matched soon. That being said, be patient. As @fourhumours said, this is all being done by student volunteers who also have other stuff going on.

If you're worried about having a place to stay, book a hotel for now and cancel the reservation if/when you get matched with a host. Nearly all hotels allow you to cancel your reservation up to 6 pm on the night of your stay at no cost to you.

FYI:
T1 = M1 at Tulane in New Orleans-speak
L1 = M1 at LSU
1L = 1st year law student

Reject a little while ago. Toodle-lee-doo, Tulane thread!

8/12, 73. Kinda expected it because even I don't think I fit in in New Orleans.

Rejected 9/11, complete on 7/19. OOS. 3.5 GPA, 35 MCAT

It's ok... Just use I-10 as the dividing line. Tulane would be on the "Downtown" side. Don't screw that up interviewees, know your directions Downtown, Uptown, River and Lake and please don't call all of Canal, Treme and the Marigny the " Quarter". There will be a test on this later.

Rejected 9/15, complete 8/14. First rejection and it definitely stings a bit.

has there been any good news on this thread recently? all i see is rejections and I'm losing hope 🙁
tulane can't be done sending out interviews can they?!

I've been complete since 8/1 and haven't heard a word yet..... :bang:

Just interviewed! It is now my top choice. Absolutely an amazing place.
I thought I saw some folks in suits in front of Murphy this afternoon. Congratulations on your interview, and good luck!

How was lunch?
