2014-2015 Tulane University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well, you'll of course go into it stressed, but my interview at least quickly made me feel at ease and we just had a conversation...

That's good to know! I haven't been to NOLA in a few years, I'm excited haha. Going down a full day early. *note to self, stay off of Bourbon Street*

To anyone who's already interviewed, how are you getting to the Murphy Building on the day of your interview? I'm staying in a hotel near the airport, but the earliest the shuttle can pick me up is at 7:00 AM. Just don't want to be late 🙁

Jeez you're staying far; that's rush hour too! I think a lot of people just stayed close to the Murphy building. I might not risk that if I were you; although I understand finances are always a constraint for people!

I would stay closer. Is the money you're saving by staying there worth the extra stress/risk?

I mean I don't mind getting up early haha, I'd rather have it closer to the airport. It was significantly cheaper though :x

I just figured out I'll cab it the way there and reserve a shuttle for the way back haha. Totally worth it for this awesome school!!

My flight is getting in early Sunday so I'll find a way to explore beforehand

Urgent question guys: I have not received a rejection nor a secondary. Does this imply they have sent the secondary earlier? My mom, a nervous wreck that she always is, stupidly called them to ask, and they replied that secondaries are sent out later. I SERIOUSLY DOUBT IT. Should I just call them and provide them my AAMC ID to make sure what happened? I sent my primary 8/21, secondary never received (or it may have been sent 8/21-8/25 when my inbox broke down).

I'm a tulane undergrad 3.5/31 .

I'm pretty sure they sent me a secondary even without my mcat score so maybe calling them yourself would be helpful? I mean, there are some privacy concerns etc. they will probably tell you more than they will tell your mom 😉

Check everything. I recently got my MCAT score back, as in yesterday, and I applied to Tulane through AMCAS yesterday afternoon and got my secondary in email today. You should call them and see. Just politely ask if it was sent earlier.

I never received a secondary from them -- I had to call and ask whether or not it should have been sent yet. They confirmed that I was supposed to have received it three weeks earlier. Call and double check. My understanding is that they routinely go out within a few days of submitting your primary.

Edit: Also, it wasn't in my spam box - I checked that many times.

"The admissions office does not accept
phone calls, email or communication
regarding the status of your application."

They havent marked one of my letter of rec as received even though its been submitted for 3 weeks now. What do I do guys? Although, realistically I'm more than likely going to be rejected from here :/

I think you can ask them this; it seems like a very fair question and may be an error on their part.

Accepted today, early decision. Interviewed 9/15.

Undergrad GPA: 2.87
Grad GPA: 4.0
MCAT: 31
So exciting!! Time to change your profile pic!

I just joined in these conversations. Unfortunately, I was rejected from Tulane 9/3, complete 8/5, OOS, LizzyM ~72, no traditional applicant

Rejected pre-interview 10/6/14
Complete 9/4/14 (Secondary complete since mid July, waited for school's committee letter, submitted 9/4)
LizzyM 72 Trad Applicant from ivy undergrad

Good luck to those still in the pool!

Rejected 10/6. Complete 9/2.

Can someone from TU-SOM monitoring this shed some light on the state of admissions this cycle? I know several people with profiles that should have earned them an interview (gpa>3.5, MCAT>36, strong ec/work at TU SOM and/or TMC) that were rejected before interviewing. The impression I'm getting is they filled most of their slots early on.

Tulane is all about "fit." They tend to look for well-rounded individuals with unique experiences and a strong commitment to community outreach and service, so good stats don't necessarily mean an interview here. They keep slots open for later interviewees too!

The math is 186 slots minus 30-something allocated to creative scholars, unknown number for ACP, and then ED acceptances. I don't doubt there are some slots.

What I am asking: does the adcom this year feel like they are running out of spots too quickly relative to previous cycles?

As a re-applicant with strong stats, strong ECs, and good interviewing skills, the thing I have learned is that no one "earns" anything in this process. At any given school, they have so many applicants that the process has a large degree of randomness and luck involved. Tulane is one of a minority of schools that actually sends out pre-interview rejections early on. In some ways this is a kindness as it is frustrating to hear nothing from schools until you are finally rejected in March or April.

I got this email about a month ago: "This is to acknowledge that we received your secondary application. You will receive another email once your application is complete and under review. We thank you for your continued patience."

I never received another email, but according to the secondary application portal, my application is complete. Is it worth calling? Did anyone else not get an email about being complete?

Same situation, been over a month without the complete email for me but complete in the portal for a while. Let us know what they say if you call, I think they might just have a lot of apps...

Yep. Never got a complete email, but I guess it didn't matter because I was rejected today.
Complete 9/8 and rejected on 10/8
Lizzy M of 68

So... did Tulane not send out any II's during the month of September? All I've seen are rejections since August. Meep.😳

I've been complete since early August and nothing yet. Crossing my fingers for an interview!!!
The previous year's thread said that interviews went until the end of February, so there's always the possibility of being in New Orleans during Mardi Gras (Feb 17)! So there's the bright side to a long wait

I saw this and kind of shat myself until I saw early decision...

Rejected today..first rejection of the cycle. Knew it was a long shot, oh well 29 schools to go

Yeah, it's shocking, but I have lived in New Orleans two years, love the city, received a Master's degree from there, and held a staff position for a year--both at the medical school. I'm passionate about both New Orleans and Tulane... that's HEAVILY considered in their admissions. Granted, my undergrad profile wasn't even close to ideal or average, but those years of my life were packed with volunteerism and leadership - two other things Tulane seems to highly value.

Rejected just now, complete 9/9; LM 73-75, International Applicant

Rejected Just now. Dissappointed and kind of resentful of the steep app fee. W/e. GL to everyone else.
