Understandable... Basically I'm abroad and already into my top choice med school so I'd probably only go to washu if I got a little scholarship money. Wondering if it's worth $1000 to travel out to STL for no chance at money

This may have already been discussed but what does it mean if you interview and you hear nothing back for a while? Does this usually mean wait list/rejection in March or something?

I'm in the same boat; I interviewed back in early October. I think the consensus has been that WashU is frugally accepting a few people now, but "the majority of acceptances will come out in march." - @FriendlyFH

Dean Ratts said they hadn't fully determined this year's process of sending out acceptances because of many changes they wanted to make to improve the admission process. She clearly said that she expected many acceptances would actually go out in March or even April. So don't be discouraged!

Quick Question: Is it a good idea to send a FAFSA now (before acceptance?)

Would any medical school every reject me because I am too poor and need financial aid?
 
Out of curiosity, are automatic interviews to WashU undergraduates no longer a thing? I was talking with a graduate who was applying this cycle and they told me that they hadn't received an invitation.

There is almost no possibility for any school to check or to consider your financial condition prior to making a decision for you. It would be unethical. Especially not WashU, they have a lot of scholarship money at their disposal. If anything, coming from a humble background gives you some advantages.

I didn't even know that WAS a thing. I am a Wash U graduate and I haven't received one. Then again, I'm not your typical extremely high quality Wash U applicant, so I don't think auto-invites to all Wash U grads is a good idea...

I don't know about automatic, but I do know at least 6 Wash U students had interviews just this week after recently getting offers. I would assume the total number is higher since those are only of people I know.

I wanna say I heard something like they are automatically invited if they meet a threshold MCAT/GPA (36/3.8). Granted, that student would most likely receive multiple interview invites from a variety of places. Don't quote me but I think I heard something like that on interview day.

Oops, my GPA fell short by .1 but I had the MCAT min. Oh well lol.

I'm pretty sure Wash U auto invites most of their grads. I'm fairly certain I got an auto-invite due to my dad being a fellow there way back in the day. They actually sent out a letter basically saying "Wash U family get special consideration."
 
For accepted students, how long after the phone call before you got an email/update on the application portal? I'm always anxious that nothing's final/real until seen in writing 😛

As previously noted on this thread. You will see a confirmation on the home page saying Congratulations xxx, your documents have been receive after you send back the signed documents. Before that, no update.

Acceptance today! Helped alleviate a Columbia wait list especially when I compare rent prices for the two. Interviewed pre thanksgiving. Figured I was wait listed until I saw a Missouri number on my phone while grilling up a quesadilla.

Dr. Ratts said that this year the accepted/not accepted/wait-list determination of every application will be by April. If you haven't heard anything yet, there's still hope!

I was told over be phone that the need based award will be sent out on a daily basis beginning mid to late March. Merit scholarship has been given out, I got one a week ago.
Edit: per last year's thread: the bulk parts of the merit award/distinguished student scholar (DSS) award seemed to be rolling out in the spring into May. And some students accepted off waitlist were able to get them too.

Where in the West? Are you describing academics or PP doctors? Name recognition (for all schools beyond the uber famous ones) probably depends on strong GME programs (if the doctor is the same specialty) and social/professional relationships with doctors who trained there.
 
I'm not talking about doctors, just lay people. I grew up in the Midwest but am doing undergrad in the Rocky Mountains and I've been super excited about my acceptance but find that I have to explain to pretty much everyone that the school is awesome because they don't know. Probably just where I am.

+1, I'm in California and the vast majority of people I've told ask "Oh where in Washington is it?". Wash U has very little name recognition out here (at least in my experiences).
 
Well at least I'm not the only one finding this situation to be the case.

No reason for lay people to know about a medical school, or even a university, unless it's in the news or they know someone who went there.

Yes definitely. I'm from the Midwest and went to school on the east coast and all of my college friends had heard of it.

I guess it also depends on who you're talking to. Most people who went to top-tier schools will have heard of it because they came across Wash U when they were applying to colleges.

Well that explains it! Most of the people I know just went to their state school and never applied to competitive programs. Hence, because of that and since Wash U isn't an ivy nor does it have good sports programs--at least that I have ever heard of--these people haven't heard of it.
 
After all, who from the west would have heard of Duke if it weren't for their basketball 😉
