2014-2015 Washington University in St. Louis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I hope I'm doing this posting stuff correctly?! Anyway, I called the Admissions Office this morning and they said that wait-list movement is "currently happening" and you could hear anytime from now until the 1st day of matriculation. It's a vague answer...but I guess that's all they can really say
Thanks, @DoubleEL. Yeah, I guess it's not the psychic hotline. . .prediction must be difficult. The algorithms, though, seem to be becoming increasingly sophisticated and accurate. Might be much less movement this year, I have read. (But know nothing!)

Stuck in traffic for two and a half hours, late for a friend's birthday party. Phone rings. "Hello?" Can't hear. "Hello? Is there someone there?" Static, crackle, static ". . .news. . ." Frustrated. "I'm sorry? I can't hear you?" "THIS IS DEAN RATTS. I HAVE SOME GOOD NEWS. . ."

So at that point, I was torn between shrieking, "Oh, my gosh! Unbelievable!" or honking my horn wildly. One day, when I make my hit movie about The Year of Interviewing Dangerously, that moment in the bumper-to-bumper should provide some comic relief! Friends, there is at least a little WL movement.

Congratulations !!! 🙂

@BengaliBrat I'm going to be so excited if we're classmates!! Congrats!!
@ladyterp, that WOULD be awesome. I have already adopted a big brother at WashU. . . @Amba has been so patient and helpful that I'm pretty sure that I could continue to pester him for a bit longer without exasperating him completely!! :poke: I am actually on my way to India (well. . .stuck in an airport!), so Dean Ratts gave me until Friday to talk with my parents and decide--we don't have any financial aid information, and the numbers play a huge part in our decision. (Our house burned down a couple of years ago and the insurance did not cover everything. . .long story!) This is a really tough decision for me already, since I love Brown and also love WashU! I will definitely post once I know. I feel so lucky already to have such good friends ready to welcome me!

Hello, just popping my head back in! I know it might feel like this process has gone on for so long but there really is a lot of movement on the waitlist still! I know this because a bunch of my classmates got accepted around this time! I got accepted in June after sending a SECOND letter of intent saying how much I wanted to go and that I definitely would go if I were accepted. I did this as a go-down-swinging/last-ditch/why-not?/nothing-left-to-lose/don't-forget-about-me/I'm-still-here effort.
Pretty much this was me:

I really believe this helped me get accepted though because I got a phone call soon after that letter. I would definitely recommend this to anyone still waiting because... go-down-swinging/last-ditch/why-not?/nothing-left-to-lose! etc. etc. Good luck!!! 🙂

Hello future classmates 🙂,

Does anyone's financial aid package indicate a student contribution of $0 (in the Net Partner portal > under the tab "View/Accept/Decline Awards" > under the category "Resources")? If so, did you file a 2014 tax return? I assume most incoming students matriculating straight from undergrad didn't file one so I'm hoping one of you cool kids could answer my question.

Fin aid calculated a pretty hefty sum for my student contribution and I'm just wondering if I they think I can contribute because I currently have an income or if they expect me to work during the med school year...? I work right now but have nowhere close in savings to the amount they list. :dead:

Thanks in advance!

Any listed amount for contribution by X isn't really meant to be a realistic estimate of what you ought to be able to afford. Ex. plenty of people receive no grants at all (perhaps even most) and you can bet that most people aren't able to contribute 80k a year toward their education.

Just ignore the contribution junk, it's all meaningless. Unless you're extremely fortunate you'll be taking out a lot of loans for medical school (and you'll be in good company!)

Hope this helps.

Understood. Thank you for the reassurance!

My dear friends who might have been my classmates, I just wrote a very regretful note to Dean Ratts sorrowfully declining my place in this class of delightful and brilliant almost-physicians. I received so little financial aid that my mother called the office to check that they had looked at the right documents! Difficult as it was to withdraw, I had to choose between graduating at least $260,000 in debt and graduating about $150,000 in debt. I know that some will say that the difference is not so large, and it is true that even $150,000 seems like an astronomical sum to owe. Nevertheless, my family just could not make the numbers work. I hope that we will have another opportunity to bond with you in person. Meanwhile, I am fortunate to have been accepted to a school that I sincerely love and that has been very generous to me. (To tell the truth, as I was deliberating, I felt guilty. . .almost adulterous!)

I want to thank you all for your support and encouragement, and to give a special shout out to @Amba, my brother from another school! 🙂 You make me feel too grateful to fit all the feeling into words!

@BengaliBrat all of that makes perfect sense to me. I'm so sorry to hear about your home! I know I agonized over my decision initially. Providence is lucky to have you!!

Edit: thread hadn't reloaded with my first post

I sent two update letters in March and April and then a letter of intent in early May. Should I sent another one in? I'm thinking there's nothing to lose at this point but would sending too many letters annoy admissions?

I don't have any new activities to report. It would just be something along the lines of "hey I'm still here and love this school, please don't forget about me!" But yeah I don't have anything substantial to add.

Still sending in the update letters.

I am hoping beyond hope that Wash U accepts me!!!

Wishing well to everyone on this thread and withdrawing, since I withdrew from consideration. Colleagues, hoping for the best education for everyone here!

So...anybody hear anything new? 🙂

Is the wait list situation probably hopeless now?

I'm an incoming M1. The number of new students added to our facebook group has slowed to just about one per week if that is any indication... :/
