This is tied with Mayo for top choice dream school, mostly due to the association with Sloan-Kettering 😍😍 Definitely a huge reach for me, but all I can do is cross my fingers and hope that I get some love!

Applying here as well. NYC would be a great place to go to med school.

Fantastic school, I would be so happy to get in here. :xf:

Any idea when they send out secondaries? My application got verified earlier today so im wondering when secondaries get sent out since everyone gets them.

The first transmittance of data from AMCAS to medical schools isn't until June 27th. You won't receive any secondaries from any schools until after that date, so sit tight!

hmm are you sure? I checked my amcas application and it said "my application has been made available to designated schools" under application status.

Quite sure 😉

"Is any applicant information shared with medical schools prior to the transmission of their processed application to that school?

Yes, schools can elect to receive applicants’ contact information. This information will be shared with schools starting on the first day of data transmission to medical schools (June 27, 2014 for the 2015 application cycle). "

thanks for the good info. damn though, so what advantage does submitting on the first day have if they're sent in waves like that?

There is usually no difference between submitting anytime the first ~5 days since it usually means you'll be verified by the first day of data transmission. After that though, the earlier you submit the better because after June 27th, transmission of data is ongoing.

Any current students care to tell us what Cornell looks for in an applicant?

Probably my biggest reach, but we'll see. Good luck to everyone!

Incoming M1 here- from my interview day and speaking with a lot of students here, WCMC really emphasizes teamwork, especially considering its PBL. All WCMC students are extremely intelligent and I have noticed that they have done some amazing stuff before med school (visiting 50 countries, serving in the army, etc). However, the thing that stood out to me is how collaborative they were- I think admissions does a good job at selecting those who can work well as a team. I have personally spoken with Lori Nicolaysen and she has said that WCMC all have demonstrated an incredible amount of leadership and various capacities. This is important because they want the PBL sessions to be engaging and thought provoking.

I will try to be someone who can answer questions throughout your admissions cycle, so feel free to reach out. GL all

Does anyone know if being an employee of WCMC helps in applying? Do they ask on the secondary?

Cornell is my dream school! My numbers are a little bit low (35/3.85+), but I am going to apply any way! Go big or go home!

I know a guy who got an interview with fairly similar stats (33-34 MCAT, 3.9+) but also a guy with a 37 MCAT and 4.0 who did not get an interview. It's all a guessing game. Good luck.

The former sounds like me!! Here's to hoping I get the same fate 🙂

Good luck! WCMC is too much out of the question for me with my wimpy 31 MCAT.

Your stats are perfectly fine to be considered at any top US medical school, and they actually fall right in the middle of Cornell's accepted students according to last year's MSAR (35Q/3.86). The question is, what your personality/activities/life story are. Cornell seems to be less stats-focused than some other schools and more activities/personality-focused, so something like this is not unusual for Cornell:

It seems like Cornell will rather accept a very interesting person with slightly lower stats than an academic all-star who is not quite as interesting.

Another incoming MS1, I don't know much about the school yet but I'm very enthusiastic about sharing what I do know 😛 I hope my classmates and I will be useful to you guys by sharing our experience with the new curriculum etc. once we start.
I second @yankees26 post; the Cornell students I've met (both current and accepted aka my class) are all very intelligent, diverse and interesting people, they have all done some fascinating things. If there is one unifying theme about Cornell, I'd say it's diversity, and it's diversity in just about anything - race/ethnicity/national origin, social background, educational background, age, sexual orientation, life experiences etc. Cornell consistently has some of the highest, if not the highest, percentages of URM, non-traditional (both in terms of age and educational background - think music and dance majors) and foreign students among the US medical schools. So make sure to bring your unique life experiences to Cornell.
Also, it's kind of anecdotal but it seems like Cornell gives a lot of weight to research and international experience (be that educational/service/etc trips to other countries or actually coming to the US from a different country). It doesn't mean that if you don't have much of these you shouldn't apply to Cornell, but it's just something I've noticed. It's also consistent with the awesome research and international opportunities Cornell offers to its students, so it makes sense for Cornell to accept students that will take advantage of these opportunities.

IS WCMC starting a 1.5 year curriculum? Anywhere I can read up on that?

For some reason I couldn't find this page browsing the website, I really appreciate this!
Also, here is a description of the first semester in the new curriculum.
Also, I'd like to preventively clear up a misconception people tend to have about Cornell's curriculum: it's not "all PBL all the time" - in fact, in the new curriculum, there will be only two 1-1.5 hour PBL sessions a week (compare to other schools that do PBL 3 times a week; I've heard from students at PBL schools that 2 sessions are quite enough to cover all the objective and wrap up a case, and that the third session is often redundant, which is apparently why Cornell got rid of it).

For MD-PhD applicants only: Please list the names of any Tri-Institutional faculty members with whom you'd like to do research. You do not need to list reasons; names are sufficient.

Get to pre-writing, and good luck everyone!

They "improved" the secondary by $25. 😀
Huh? Last year, it was one of the cheapest secondaries.

I'm rooting for you specifically milski, but you already know that 😉

It went from $75 to $100. It's not outrageous or anything, but since I had the two emails next to each other that was the one of the two differences. The other is that they recommend you to avoid using Chrome this year. And yes, I know, I'll return the favor, come match time. 😉

I haven't gotten one either, but there is a link on their website to the secondary. When I put in my ID and birthday, the application came up and everything.... Should I wait for them to contact me before I fill it out? Or is it a "publicly available" type of thing?

So secondary applications are sent out to all AMCAS applicants, correct?

Spam folder? I doubt that they could have done any screening in the couple of hours they've had access to the applications.

Probably coming out in batches? Dunno. Got one last year though and I don't think they screen anyway

To the best of my knowledge, Cornell doesn't screen before sending secondaries. The invitations come in batches, so some people receive them sooner than others.

Glad to see secondaries are same from last year. Haven't officially gotten mine yet, but good thing for pre-writing.

Cornell's have been a bit tricky due to the 200 word limit.

is there any way to save the secondary while working on the application? or does it need to be completed all at once?

nevermind..just figured this out after reading the instructions :]

I'm not 100% sure, but I think there is a way of saving your application in the application portal before submitting it. I think something about this is written either on the login page or on the application page itself. (I can't access my application now to confirm/deny it.)

In any case, you can always save your essays in a text file and then simply copy-paste them into your application when you're ready (which I think is a good practice for a number of reasons: 1) you won't have to worry about saving your essays on the application web site; 2) you can tweak the same essay for multiple secondaries because many of the questions are the same/very similar; 3) you can review your secondary before the interview - keep in mind that you won't be able to access your Cornell secondary once you submit it).

In the instruction sheet (the first page you reach with your link) it tells you that once you hit submit it is saved BUT NOT submitted. You need to hit confirm and pay on the next page to actually submit the application

is the application portal not working for anybody else?

This must be it; I remember it was something vaguely confusing 🙂

how does the year work for the courses? i just graduated in 2014, so if we took a course our freshman year (2010-2011), would we put 2010 for freshman fall and 2011 for freshman spring? or do we just go with 2010 for all freshman year courses, 2011 for soph, 2012, for jr. and 2013 for senior?

I believe Cornell does not screen pre-secondary. Received a secondary just now, here's hoping for a longshot.

2 questions:

The course number entry forms only allow 7 characters, my course codes are almost all longer than that, how do I enter my courses?

The letters of recommendation section only allows for 3 entries, but they didn't mention any caps in their website and MSAR says they accept a max of 10 letters... What do I do about the letters that won't be included in those 3 entries?

Submitted! this was my first secondary. goodluck everyone!!

Edit: Cornell said in the confirmation email that they will update us when we are complete e.g. they receive our letters. AMCAS automatically sends the letters, correct? And if anyone who applied last year knows, do they then just email us when we're complete?

does anybody have answers for posts #46 and 48? thanks!
